You can cook it a lot of different ways, but you can just put it in a crock pot (add some chicken stock if you want for gravy), turn it on and then turn it off when you can't pick it up cuz its so tender. The kitchen will be a mess. Then put it in with a half can of chicken stock. Barely covers the bottom, then add some as time goes along. Then add a can of Campbells mushroom soup if you want. Pork shoulder has a great deal of fat and connective tissue in it, there's practically no danger of it drying out. The connective tissue gelatinizes over the long, low cooking time making the meat moist and tender. The fat renders out and pools in the bottom so you can just lift out the roast leaving it behind. No additional liquid is necessary. It'll cook fine at high or low settings. The choice pretty much comes down to how long you're going to leave it unattended or how much of a rush you're in. I've pushed it through in 5-6 hours on high when I was at home with it and left it for 8-10 on low when I was out for the day. Burning food is pretty much impossible in a crockpot because even on high it's still too low to brown, much less burn. The worst thing that can happen is you forget it for some ridiculously long time and overshoot by days and it dries out. Crockpots are very, very forgiving on the long side of cooking times when it comes to meat. Veggies need a little more attention because they can kind of disintegrate if left on too long. Saw it on sale at the Piggly Wiggly today...bought a small piece and decided to give it a half ass shot. Brined it for about 5 hours in salt/sea salt/garlic/paprika, rubbed it in some more garlic and salt and pepper and Olive Oil, browned quickly and now on low over night, will see what I get when I wake up. As long as you have one or two things throughout the day to keep the metabolism going (coffee or green tea works), fasting can actually be a great tool for weight loss. Specifically, fasting all day and then having an intense heavy lifting workout temporarily opens up priority paths for carbohydrates into muscles instead of into fat. Yes, this means you can be pretty liberal with carbs after a heavy lift, especially if you've fasted all day and aren't over calorie limits. Use lean ground beef, fat free cheddar, brown rice, eggs, tomato sauce, a bunch of spices, and bread crumbs. Cook the rice and beef, mix everything together, stuff in pepper, put in oven. Dayum. Not a ton of calories, but a ton of delicious. I put a little cinnamon in it and a ton of cilantro and chipotle powder.
