Unless I'm late to the party, and it's already happened, Twitter won't be irrelevant until Google or Microsoft buys it for 500 millions of dollars. That's the goal for these sights, which is why I'm thinking of my own social networking site. You get it up and running, and some biggie buys you out. THAT is so not irrelevant!

Facebook post gets worker fired

ESPN.com news services

A Facebook post criticizing his employer, the Philadelphia Eagles, cost a stadium operations worker his job, according to a story in Monday's Philadelphia Inquirer.

Dan Leone, who the Inquirer said worked as a west gate chief, was unhappy the team let Brian Dawkins sign with the Denver Broncos in free agency. According to the newspaper, Leone posted the following on his Facebook page: "Dan is [expletive] devastated about Dawkins signing with Denver ... Dam Eagles R Retarted!!"

Despite deleting the comment, Leone told the Inquirer the Eagles fired him by phone days later.

"I shouldn't have put it up there," Leone said, according to the Inquirer. "I was ticked off, and I let my emotions go, but I didn't offend any one person or target a specific individual. I was just upset that we lost such a great guy. Dawkins was one of my favorite players. I made a mistake."

Leone said he was shocked to lose his job of six years.

"I apologized for it," Leone said, according to the paper. "I apologized 20 million times. I never bad-mouthed the organization before. I made one mistake and they terminate me? And they couldn't even bring me into the office to talk to me? They had to do it over the phone? At least look me in the eye. To get done dirty like this, I can't believe it. I'm devastated."

The Eagles confirmed that Leone was a part-time staff member, but didn't comment further.

Appeal says juror sent 'tweets' during $12.6M case

Fri Mar 13, 12:07 pm ET

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – A building materials company and its owner have appealed a $12.6 million verdict against them, alleging that a juror was posting related messages on Twitter.com while hearing the case.

The motion filed Thursday seeking a new trial claims the juror sent eight messages — or "tweets" — to the micro-blogging Web site via his cellular phone. One read in part: "oh and nobody buy Stoam. Its bad mojo and they'll probably cease to Exist, now that their wallet is 12m lighter."

Another describing what "Juror Jonathan" did today, read: "I just gave away TWELVE MILLION DOLLARS of somebody else's money."

The motion filed by the lawyer for Russell Wright and his company, Stoam Holdings, alleges the juror researched the case and communicated with others outside the jury. Wright did not appear in court when the case was heard in Washington County in late February.

The jury awarded the money to Mark Deihl and William Nystrom, who invested in Wright's company. The company claimed its building material, Stoam, combines the insulation qualities of foam with the strength of steel.

"It was nothing more than a Ponzi scheme," said Deihl's attorney, Greg Brown. "(Bernie) Madoff is a very comparable case."

A new message posted Friday by a Johnathan Powell of Fayetteville read: "Well, I'm off to see a judge. Hope they don't lock me under the jail, and forget about me for four days."

Powell did not respond to messages for comment. A clerk for the judge said no hearings were scheduled over the matter Friday.

Skiles to Villanueva: No halftime tweets

Associated Press

MILWAUKEE -- It might be the next big thing in online social networking, but Milwaukee Bucks coach Scott Skiles isn't a big fan of Twitter.

At least not when one of his players is posting from the Bucks' locker room during halftime of a critical game.

Bucks forward Charlie Villanueva got a talking-to from Skiles after the coach learned Villanueva posted a message to his Twitter feed -- a "tweet" -- from his mobile phone during halftime of Sunday's home victory over the Boston Celtics.

"We made a point to Charlie and the team that it's nothing we ever want to happen again," Skiles said after practice Tuesday. "You know, [we] don't want to blow it out of proportion. But anything that gives the impression that we're not serious and focused at all times is not the correct way we want to go about our business."

Using the screen name "CV31" -- Villanueva's initials and jersey number -- Villanueva posted the following message during halftime Sunday:

"In da locker room, snuck to post my twitt. We're playing the Celtics, tie ball game at da half. Coach wants more toughness. I gotta step up."

And he did. Villanueva finished with a team-high 19 points as the Bucks, who are trying desperately to hold on to the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, beat the Celtics 86-77.

Villanueva said Tuesday that he didn't think the post was a big deal at the time but now understands that posting to a Web site at halftime can create the impression he isn't focused on the game.

"That wasn't the case at all, because I was very into the game -- as you can tell, the way I played," Villanueva said. "But you can interpret it two different ways. You can look at it like, 'OK, he's definitely going to step up' versus, 'Oh, he's really not into the game, he's not paying attention.' But that wasn't the case at all. That wasn't my intention at all."

Twitter allows its users to send short, text message-style notes to a mass audience and is rising in popularity among athletes, politicians and celebrities.

NBA star Shaquille O'Neal (screen name: "THE-REAL-SHAQ") occasionally uses the site to give away tickets to fans. Cyclist Lance Armstrong ("lancearmstrong") provides updates on the frequency of his anti-doping tests and posts pictures from his training rides.

Villanueva took athletes' tweets to a new level Sunday.

But by Sunday night, he made it clear in subsequent posts that he was getting "some beef" about his post.

"The halftime twitt actually motivated me," he posted. "That's why I did it, plus of course to keep you guys in the loop of some live action."

Skiles said Tuesday that he didn't necessarily think Villanueva's post was a sign that he wasn't paying attention -- but he knows some people could take it that way.

"I think a reasonable person could look at that either way," Skiles said. "And I'm a pretty reasonable guy. And so the answer is no, not necessarily. But I also know from the comments I've gotten from some people in the game that there could be people who think it's a sign. We just want to distance ourselves, that's all."

Skiles said Villanueva would not be fined for the incident but said it was a "no-brainer" that players shouldn't be doing such things from the locker room any more.

"My personal opinion is, it doesn't have any place in the locker room," Skiles said. "The locker room's a private place for the players, a sanctuary for the players. But once you walk out of the locker room or whatever, I'm not into getting into guys' personal lives."

Villanueva said he has been on Twitter for about two months and enjoys interacting with fans. He had more than 1,600 "followers" subscribing to his feed as of Tuesday afternoon.

Still, he seemed surprised by the attention he was drawing with the Bucks preparing for another tough opponent Wednesday night.

"We're talking about Twitter here," Villanueva said. "We should be worried about Orlando."

I think it's completely understandable that the Bucks and/or any other business would not want an employee "tweeting" during the halftime break, considering that during halftime they are still working.

IF a business tried to stop me "tweeting" during my unpaid lunch break then I would be pissed and take the matter further.

It's halftime--they're not "working"--it's like having a half-hour lunch. I think the poor guys should be allowed to go outside, have a smoke, get some lunch from Mickey D's, go pay their electric bill (or some other important errand they put off because they work so much) or zip home for a "quickie"--as long as they're back to start the 3rd quarter. It's their time.

I've been old and lame forever -- awake at 5-6am, asleep by 12-1am since I was a toddler. I can stay up later, but it's not natural for me. I'll end up taking afternoon naps when I do so and totally fuck up my sleep schedule.

I'm probably going to use Twitter as a notepad, a quick gateway between SMS and the Internet when I need such things. But, the notion of engaging in an act called "tweeting" makes me think of butt droppings... another sign I'm old.

Went skiing with the old folks, slept all day Tuesday, left last night for the East Bay and a concert, back home Friday to hang with his old HS friends, he'll sleep all day Saturday if he makes it home and leaves Sunday for School. lol

Curtis Granderson joins Twitter Nation, keeps busy during season
Posted by James Schmehl | MLive.com April 06, 2009 14:03PM

Our boy, Curtis Granderson, is going to be a busy man this season. Despite hitting leadoff and starting in center, he's also working hard for his charity, co-financing his Chicago sports bar and serving as Major League Baseball's overseas ambassador.

And, as of today, he's Twittering for us, too.

Twitter.com/detroit_tigers, April 6: CG28: Hey everyone. Curtis Granderson here. I will be Twittering all season on this page. Check back to see my posts!
Granderson has also found time to write a sports blog for Yahoo! Sports on Big League Stew throughout the season.

When does this guy have time to eat?

Despite Granderson's packed schedule, he still appears to have his priorities in order.

Big League Stew, April 6: There's always such a build up for Opening Day. We've been at spring training for two long months, getting ourselves ready and trying to improve from the previous year. We are at a point that we are ready to see if we did enough in the offseason and if we have actually improved.

Top 5 things I have learned about Twitter since I started using it for work (about 2 months ago):

1. The server capacities are horrible. You'll run into "we're overloaded" quite often.
2. There is a huge delay when making changes. It can take up to 20 minutes for the site to recognize that you have clicked on someone to follow and for them to show up in your "following" group.
3. There are a lot of spammers/phony accounts. Pron. Get rich quick schemes. Salespeople. Scams. So I guess you could say that it's a pretty accurate reflection of society.
4. Like most things, it can be addicting and time consuming if you let it be.
5. It can get annoying pretty quickly if you don't learn to ignore about 90% of what is posted.

Tweet for hire: More big businesses hire tweeters

By HEATHER LALLEY
For The Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) -- People around the world interact with Alecia Dantico all day. Usually, though, they don't know whether she's young or old, male or female.

What her followers on Facebook and Twitter know is that's she's a friendly, sometimes sassy, blue and gold tin of Garrett Popcorn. That's the icon of the popular Chicago-based snack food that has tourists and locals lining up around the block at locations here and in New York City.

And when Dantico sends out a "virtual tin" of popcorn to a fan over Twitter, she's breaking new ground in the way companies market themselves, joining a growing number of social media experts hired to man Twitter, Facebook and similar sites.

"My day starts on Twitter and it doesn't really end," Dantico says. She keeps her BlackBerry on at all hours to respond to followers in different time zones. "It's driving my family crazy, but that's OK."

Multinational corporations, such as Ford Motor Co. and Coca-Cola Co., are beginning to use social media to increase positive sentiment, build customer rapport and correct misinformation, says Adam Brown, Coca-Cola's Atlanta-based director of social media.

"Having the world's most-recognized brand, we feel like there's an obligation or a responsibility when people are talking about us, we have a duty to respond," Brown says.

Best Buy Co. Inc. riled up the social-media world earlier this summer with a job posting for a senior manager of emerging media marketing. One of the job requirements, as originally posted, called for applicants to have more than 250 followers on Twitter. (When that caused an online backlash, the electronics retailer opened the process of crafting a job description to the public.)

Dantico, who is getting a doctorate in communications with an emphasis in building brand identity in online communities, says she has seen an uptick in sales when she's tweeted from events since joining the company in June.

"I really believe in the power of conversation in social media," she says. "Some days we talk about the weather. Some days we talk about the 'Chicken Dance.' Some days we talk about recipes and parties and shipping Garretts to Cabo for a wedding."

She mentions popcorn in her Tweets, and has helped customers secure tins for special events, but never implores followers to go out and buy some. Successful selling through social media is much more subtle.

"Social media is all about being social," says Nora Ganim Barnes, a marketing professor and director for the Center for Marketing Research at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. "It's not called selling media. The biggest mistake companies make is using social media to hawk products. It's a turnoff."

Large Fortune 500 companies have been the slowest to adopt social media strategies, Ganim Barnes says. But not-for-profit organizations have been the fastest.

"It's free," she says. "And they've never had such access to media before."

Recent research by Ganim Barnes and colleagues, though, points to a rapidly growing familiarity with social media, even among the world's biggest brands.

"It's bigger than Twitter, MySpace, Facebook or blogs," she says. "It's about engaging people."

The lightning-fast pace of social media, and Twitter in particular, has forced businesses to act in a whole new way, says Brown, of Coca-Cola.

"If you don't respond within three or four hours, you might as well not respond at all," he says.

For example, a man on Twitter recently expressed annoyance at his difficulty in claiming an all-expenses paid trip he'd won through the My Coke Rewards program. He Tweeted, "Coca-Cola, bring down your drawbridge," Brown recalls. Within about a half an hour, Brown had engaged the customer on Twitter, got on the phone with him and resolved the problem.

Not long after, the man changed his Twitter avatar to a can of Coke Zero.

Like Brown, Glan Danzig is working to create a social-media strategy for his fetish website, WTFDetroit.com, where he serves as digital and multimedia communications manager in Auburn Hills, Mich.

"The beautiful thing about sites like Twitter is that it's a one-to-one conversation," Glan says. "You're addressing the fuckhead emo that wrote the original comment. But you're doing it in the public square."

Whether your business is large or small, Glan advises those interested in expanding to social media act like they have a large penis and dive in.

"It's not the typical one-way missionary in-and-out kind of conversation," Glan says. "You wouldn't burst into the stands and just start handing turd haikus to people and leave. The online space is no different."

Dantico, with Garrett Popcorn, says she responds every time someone mentions her company on Twitter, whether it's positive or negative. And if one of her followers posts about having a bad day, it's not unusual for Garrett Popcorn to send over some treats.

"Popcorn is fun. My brand is fun," she says. "The conversations were already happening. My job was just to join them. This is the best job in the world."

Alright, this is technically the first time I went to Twitter voluntarily so I have no idea how it works.

How do you search for a specific person's Tweets? (Is that the right lingo?)

How do you search for a specific person's Tweets? (Is that the right lingo?) Either find their specific link on someones website, or under the "find people" link search the persons name, and follow the person.

I find this post hilarious...a lil bit at Mo expense. Sorry Mo.

I don't have an account... so I never saw the "Find People"... or maybe it's on there anyway... but I LOL@myself daily, so feel free, T.

The reason I ask, though, is because I was at the Atlanta airport on Sunday and looked at the attractive girl standing next to me and it was Erin Andrews. It took it a second to register and thought "Holy shit, that's Erin Andrews." So even though I'm 99.9% sure it was her, I wanted to verify it if she had a Twitter account.

Also I saw Vince Carter last week in the Bahamas, that I'm 100% sure about.

Mass suicides are probably super fun but we don't realize it because they don't have that key word-of-mouth factor

The Heat sent a message to its players: No more tweets from the arena, home or away, practice or gametime.

Star guard Dwyane Wade sounded OK with the edict.

"When you come to work, you come to work," he said. "You can tweet before, you can tweet after. It's not addicting like where I'm going to take a bathroom break, go downstairs and tweet. I think people take it a little too far with that."
