Wow. Great game and great series (well except for game 3). The Wings were picked by many to not even make the playoffs. And really, that almost happened. They played really well tonight. The line shuffle was a grat move and gave the Wings three strong lines.

The Wings deserve to lose that game and the Hawks were definitely the better team tonight. That said the Hawks can be beat and even in this game you can see the way to beat them and why the Wings failed tonight (other than matching Chicago's hard skating).

Turnovers. This is the biggest reason the Wings lost. I hate the whole giveaway/takeaway thing, some takeaways are just great plays but a lot are not being aware or careful with the puck. So add them up and the Wings had 18 turnovers. What's that mean? It means that if the Wings turned it over in Chicago's end, the Hawks with their speed and skill were flying with the puck through the neutral zone. In the defensive end, well, just a lot more control and opportunities for the Hawks. Cut those turnovers down, way down, and that a big step right there.

Physical Play. The Hawks didn't really play physical at all and even got frustrated when the Wings were really physical with them. They don't like to be checked and pushed around. They can get rattled if you check them in their own end.

Where Goals Are Scored Everyone will look at the shot stat and think that's the tell-all for the game. Bullshit. I've seen enough Wings games where they've lost while doubling the other teams shots. Look where the shots come from. The first two goals where great shots, but they were from mid-range and with Howard facing them. That's what the Hawks do, as the Wings of old did, they like to fire tons of mid-range shots at the goalie (and, like the Wings, they have amazing shooters). But Howard can stay in front of them and if he's on, like tonight, he can stop a fuckload of those shots.

The Wings, like the Ducks, score down low. Even Olczyk talked about it. The Wings keep the puck low and get in close to the net, screening the goalie, attacking rebounds. If Hossa weren't such an amazing defensive forward they would have ad another couple of great opportunities down low. If they do enough of that throughout the game (tonight they only did it for one period) they will score more and they will wear the Hawks down.

Everyone saw a juggernaut tonight. I didn't at all. I saw an amazing team that's also beatable. If the Wings finally cut out the damned turnovers and get back to the skating and pressure they did the last two games of the Ducks series, they frustrate the hell out of the Hawks and do damage.

The 'gers have had penalties whistled on them both in the final 2 minutes of the 3rd and now in the first 3 minutes of OT. I remember when refs would only call really obvious penalties in the playoffs.

I'm not if it's not dissected. But in this case Chicago only getting 20 shots is incredibly telling of the great all-ice play by the Wings. They pressured the whole ice and owned the neutral zone. They got transition goals and shots down low. They played so good today.

Actually in theory it does favor the Wings. The hawks want a game with lots of space and movement all over the ice. The Wings try to take that away by covering that space, pressuring and grinding.

The goal shouldn't have been disallowed. We used to see that BS all the time with Homer getting called for that for no reason. But at the same time their first goal should never have happened and the Wings should have had at least a 2 minute powerplay off of it.

Personally let them all just talk about the refs. I want the Wings to continue their game plan and even step it up (which they will have to do). I want the Blackhawks to think it's only about effort and refs and not change a thing. This way the Wings have an even better chance.
