The third installment in the popular series that has included "What's for lunch?" and "What's your afternoon snack?".

I started out the day with my traditional Lipton iced tea (unsweetened, no lemon) aka liquid crack.

Next I'm moving on to a Coke Zero, which is surprisingly good.

Yesterday I dabbled with an energy drink, since sleep hasn't been coming very easy lately. I went with a Monster Lo Carb tallboy. It was decent, but I'm wondering if any of you energy drink experts can recommend something with better taste (prefer no or low carb, I think drinking carbs in general is silly).

I'm pretty inexperienced when it comes to energy drinks, basically I've had the one that Mountain Dew puts out and a few Red Bulls.

energy drinks suck ass. they are worse than soda for you.

My drink of choice is good old Cherry coke. Killians at night. Actually I drink about %80 tap water though in the course of a day. I used to get sick often, but now I get sick less than once a year since drinking my daily alottment of water.

All kidding aside, studies have shown that drinking alot of water is actually better for alertness (and all kinds of other things) than coffee, tea, or any of those so called "energy drinks".
Drinking lots of water has been linked to reduced heart disease, and reduced occurences of most cancers.
It's also easier to clean up if you spill it.

Bad for you how? Can you elaborate?

The one I had had 10 calories, 3g of carbs, 100% RDV of riboflavin, niacin, B6, B12, low sodium, ginseng, etc.

I don't recall many sodas like that.

Of course, it has a lot of caffeine.

I know energy drinks are worse for your wallet. A can of coke costs about 75 cents, but even a small can of Red Bull is $1.99.

it depends. most are just loaded in sugar and caffeine. some are loaded in minerals and stuff, but I bet that is less than %5 of them.

Also, caffeine is one of the most overused substances. people load up on coffee in the morning but don't realize that caffeine doesn't help you early in the morning as much. You get tired in the course of a day from a chemical in your body that naturally produces itself all day. caffiene blocks the production of this chemical, so it helps you from getting drowsy. but, since you haven't built up large amounts yet in the morning, it doesn't really help.

You'll probably say it does help, but you probably also notice it helping when you haven't had a good nights sleep. sleep gets rid of that chemical, so you probably already have a large amount of it in your system when you wake up...which would make the caffiene effective that early. I read this all in my Men's Health, where they said most people should be having their coffee around noon to maximize the benifits of it.

BTW, I am drinking a coke right now at 10 am because I stayed up late last night. but since I only drink 1 soda a day, I don't feel bad about it.

One chemical that soda contains that I don't think energy drinks do is "High Fructose corn Syrup".
Studies have shown that ONE soda per day can lead to a gain of fifteen pounds over X (I don't remember how many) years, and if you want to see how bad and how pervasive HFCS is, google it.
You may never drink another coke again.

Oh, I know. Soda isn't good for you. That's why I only drink one a day. People amaze me that drink that stuff all day. My rommate in college got kidney stones twice in a semester drinking 4-5 cans of soda a day.

It's amazing how many kids have diabetes from eating junk food and drinking soda.

I have solved the problem of drinking too much Coke by diluting it with Southern Comfort.
But seriously..is this thing ON?!
I drink a couple Cokes a day myself. I love it with a meal. It's a "risk-reward" thing. You gotta have SOME evil pleasures. I don't snack at all, don't eat muc in the way of sweets. So, I figure I can chug a couple cokes a day.

your sugar level is probably bottoming out and maybe you are getting the initial gains of coffee (energy increase from the other ingrediants). i have no idea why that brand would help more. maybe it is more sugar and less beans or something, who knows. I don't drink coffee at all. you wouldn't get shakes from a build up of that chemical (that makes you drowsy). that would have to be an energy issue. drowsy is not the same as being exhausted. cold medicines don't make you exhausted (though the cold might), they make you drowsy/sleepy. i can be worn out from playing bball and not fall asleep. from what I understood, caffeine only affects the chemical buildup associated with being sleepy. that's why those energy drinks have all that other crap in there to deal with you just being worn out.

And I'm no expert on this either. i've just read a couple articles on it.

Go to the vitamin section of your local CVS and look for this energy gum, I think it's made by life-fitness. Trust me, it works surprisingly well and is just a bunch of B-12, no caffeine or any of that other junk that fucks you up. Tastes like most other gums, eclipse or whatever. Pop two of those and you'll be surprisingly alert.

I didn't believe it either but you'll be surprised.

I can't stand coffee. I tried it for a year when I worked at a place that had supposedly decent strains of coffee, hoping I'd develop a taste for it. I never did.

I'm partial to bat-piss (a.k.a. Mountain Dew) in the morning. I find it flushes out that "morning mouth" taste better than anything else, gets me going. I tend to gravitate toward water and iced tea (or hot tea of various flavors if I'm doing oriental) as the day goes on. I still end up drinking too much carbonated fizz, though, and I have the gut to show for it. <sigh>

Having said that, I think HFCS has gotten a bad rap in some ways. The real problem isn't so much HFCS per se, but that it's artificially "sweeter for cheaper than sugar" in the U.S., thanks largely to the protectionist sugar tariffs and quotas we've had since the 1980s. We have made sugar artficially expensive while making corn artificially cheap. So, we've "evolved" to HFCS in our foods as opposed to sugar and other natural sweeteners. Even in the wake of things like CAFTA, where we should have "free trade" with the tropical places that make cane sugar, we still protect our domestic sugar prices and encourage crap like HFCS, where you can put less of it in and it's sweeter so you can indulge more sweet tooths with junk calories. Bleah.

diet drinks taste terrible to me. I've never understood them (unless you are diabetic and need sugar free stuff). People say they have less calories. big deal. if you are worried about your calaories you should try drinking water, juice, or something else. Or don't order that whopper with cheese to eat with your diet coke.

then again, I've never understood how pepsi got so popular too (it taste's like flat coke). i'd rather have coke, faygo cola, meijer cola, rc cola, sams cola, or any other cola before a pepsi. I prefer my soda to have a little bite to it (like barqs). it must be due to the cindy crawfor commercials back in the day, i don't know. but to each his own. drink what you like.

i did a similar thing. I gave it up for Lent (I am catholic) and really only drank water and the occasional juice. The first couple weeks I couldn't stand the water, but now I find water to be more refreshing than anything else (though soda is tasty). I usually fill my water pitcher up 2-3 times a day. I never stopped liking regular soda, but maybe I didn't give it up long enough. I really got hooked on water when I cooked at Gordie Howe's. Slaving over hot grills made you drink a TON of water.

It's amazing how much better I feel when I am fully hydrated with water. I can tell when I really need a glass of water (I get lethargic).

Well, I've been bummed out during the past week because Lipton changed their formula on what has been my beverage of choice for about 10 years now (switched to Black Tea leaves). The taste isn't nearly as good.

I was delighted this afternoon to discover "Gold Peak Iced Tea" which I believe is being distributed by Coca Cola.

The taste is pretty damn good, and I picked up a few buy one, get one free coupons at the store too.

Busch is the great neglected cheapo beer.

Kind of hoppy, kind of creamy, kind of bitter. Not nearly as much bite as an IPA though. The pumpkin taste is pretty subtle. I like it a lot, but a lot of people don't like pumpkin beers at all.

lol, per their website:

Ichabod is fall in a glass. We take the soul of a Michigan fall and blend it into a beer masterpiece. With the essences of everything from gingerbread to pumpkin pie, Ichabod complements all kinds of autumn traditions. That's probably why Ichabod boasts one of the most fanatical followings of any of our beers.

Depends on where you go, both in Spain and in the city you're in. I find women to be a lot colder up here in Barcelona but there are still bars for lots of women and bars for easy women (more or less). But as good as a party town as Barcelona is, Madrid is that much better IMO including how open they are.

Hangover = dehydration. Drink a ton of water, some gatorade, or the best one my friends have found so far, a pediasure. They're made to hydrate kids that have diarrhea, and pretty much all they do is hydrate you to the extreme.

Big Swami

I have discovered that the Pedialyte popsicles are the hands-down, no-one-even-comes-close, blink-and-it's-over, get-your-groove-back-Jack cure for a hangover. They taste kind of nasty but I swear it works like gangbusters. Recommended to me by a nurse.

I'm pretty sure there's something else wrong with me by this point, though. I'm still feeling awful today and nothing seems to help except Alka-Seltzer.
