I have an... unusual work schedule. I work less than full time hours and do it from home. It involves some morning, some afternoon and some evening work seven days a week.

As a result, I'm never fully "at work" nor am I ever really off until late evening. Right now, I'm at my neighborhood bar having just finished my afternoon work making a valiant attempt at getting obliterated.

If you haven't looked into mobile broadband, I highly recommend it. It just... works. Everywhere. At speeds that are quite decent.

The only potential downside is if you need to share your internet connection with other people in the household, in which case it's not very practical to take the internet with you in your pocket when you leave the house.

I think I saw it advertised for like $40 the other day. That's what you pay for the stuff in your home I believe. It seems like it would be a good option for me since I'm hardly ever at home but always with my laptop.

I have it through sprint. It's $40/month for some silly low limit that you'd reach just your WTF browsing. I've had their $60/month unlimited for a little over a year and have been pretty happy with it. A little more expensive than the cable modem I got rid of but the convenience of internet anywhere more than outweighed it.

And because I have nothing better to do, here's why you shouldn't waste your money on Grey Goose when you go out to the bars. This is the tale as told to me and I haven't bothered checking any facts, so I apologize if anyone knows anything's incorrect.

As the story goes, in the early eighties Jagermeister was bought by a very smart young enterpreneur to market to the United States. We'll call him "Jim", as I can't remember his real name. It wasn't all that popular or anything but was doing moderately well.

One day in the early eighties, an intern or secretary or something came into Jim's office with a terrified look on her face, almost afraid to hand him the news report that she had just seen. Eventually she handed over the story, afraid he was going to go on a tirade, upset about the bad press.

Jim looked at the story, was puzzled for a few seconds, and then eventually a big grin crept across his face. "Crazy German Devil Liquor Makes College Kids Insane, as if They're Possessed by the Devil!" the headline read.

As the intern braced herself for Jim's wrath, she was shocked to hear him laughing instead. "Joanne!" he shouted, "Call marketing. I want thousands of copies of this story made up, post them all over every college campus in the country! This is going to be huge!" The confused Joanne complied, and within a few weeks the Jagermeister craze was born. A few years later, Jim sold off Jagermeister, making hundreds of millions in profit.

Flash forward to the early nineties. The vodka craze is in full bloom. Absolut ads are everywhere and Stoli and Ketel One are starting to make inroads into the US market. Ready to make his next fortune, Jim makes his move.

He flies to Europe and travels around looking for just the right deal. Eventually he finds a small distillery in France. He quickly makes them an offer they can't refuse and snatches up the company. "Grey Goose" is born. They make good vodka, nothing special by any means, but definitely not swill. Jim has the distillery amp up the production and starts his marketing department up on designing the fanciest, most sophisticated bottle they can manage.

When the distillery finds out how much Jim wants to charge for their Vodka they tell him he's crazy. "Sir, we make a very fine vodka but it is by no means the best in the world. We'll go broke if you try to charge this!"

"Just trust me," Jim replies and goes ahead with his plan. He releases Grey Goose in the fancy new bottles and prices it at an absurd price point, 50% higher than Absolut and other similair quality vodkas. Shockingly, Grey Goose is a huge success. Despite the questionable quality, the fancy bottle and perceived quality from the high price point make it a must have item for the "in crowd". Jim, once again, makes a fortune.

So next time you're out at the bar about to order your 12 dollar "Grey Goose and Tonic", remember this: before the fancy bottle, Grey Goose sold their vodka for about the same price as Gordon's. Marketing.

I agree. Beer can be all over the place as far as taste goes. But Vodka's taste can't be influenced that much, imo. Plus 95% of the Vodka consumed is a mix. Why bother spending so much that is mixed with some fruit juice by the time it hits the pallet.


BTW...I bet my brother and his old Prof takes care of 2% of the straight Vodka consumed. I like it basically straight too sometimes...I put a few green olives and a lil olive juice in and its ready.

For me yea, everyone has their own taste. But it is my favorite drink to chaser mathematical method. Bombay is also light years smoother than Seagram(may be the smoothest gin out there imo), so its a much better addition to the juice.

There's a rum called Sailor Jerry's, fairly affordable at $16/750 mL. 2 shots of rum and 3 of coke with that stuff makes a damn fine rum & coke. I'll have to get another bottle.

Gin makes me REAL stupid, I stay away from the stuff. I'll never forget my buddy from college though who thought that Bombay Saphire was really blue in color and embarrassed the hell out of himself telling all these people "That's all I drink, only the finest, saphire! The blue gin!" The look on his face when he was told that it's not actuallly blue was priceless.

Tomorrow I'm gonna pick up some Chimay Blue, it's been a while. For the record, I'll be drinking it out of one of my Chimay glasses, which I bought in Chimay.

They are hardcore about that shit in Chimay. When you are at the official restaurant you can buy Chimay by the year, just like champagne. I think the most expensive bottle they had when I was there was about $200 for a 1995. They have fuckin good cheese too, Chimay brand of course.

I'm enjoying a few Coor's Lights, it hasn't been a while. For the record, I'll be drinking it out of the Coor's Light can, which I bought at the store.

Go to Fridays in Southfield and order a Pussycrusher. Very solid drink.

Newcastle Brown Ale. Yummy!

So good. Bell's new Brown Ale is pretty money itself.

Batch 8745, Packaged on 9/11/08.

Poured with a large head, off white foam that dimpled nicely and retained good depth. Very compact bubbles. Dark red/brown.

Smell is nutty with some toffee and milk. Minor noble hops spicing.

Tastes like a hybrid between a brown ale and a sweet stout (and given that this is a Bell's beer I shouldn't really be surprised at the stout creeping in). The combination works well -- has the roasted aspects of a stout but in a very subdued, sweeter fashion. A coffee/Hershey's syrup/Nutella blend comes through at the end with some minty hops that add a touch of dryness. Some nonspecific fruit and honey on the front.

Mouthfeel is very wet and creamy, I kept expecting a drier beer from the taste. Carbonation comes and goes smoothly with a strong peak. Sweet and smooth on the finish.

Definitely tasty and sessionable -- a good spin on the brown ale style and a solid fall seasonal.
