Just had a werid weather experience. There's a storm rolling in so I took my dog out. When I was out with him I could see the clouds way in the distance, but couldn't hear thunder yet. It was still as can be. I wasn't inside two minutes before a windburst hit us. I ran outside to grab a garbage can and literally had to fight my way inside the wind was so bad. 20 seconds later it was calm, and I'm still waiting for the storm.

Ha! Two friends called me within 10 minutes of each other. The first friend wanted to borrow my chainsaw because he had a big-ass tree branch collapse due to the storm. Another (husband+wife) needed a place to stay because they were out of power due to the storm. I told 'em to bring their chainsaw and meet me at the first friend's place. :)

What is the difference between isolated and scattered thunderstorms?

Mr. Oobir
06-16-2008, 05:42 PM
Isolated storms sit silently in their one-bedroom apartments, checking their MySpace page for comments from friends and pining pathetically for their high-school days of mild popularity, whereas scattered storms mumble and dance little jigs in front of park benches as amused tourists snap pictures from a safe distance.

Or, check this link and look about 60% down the page: http://www.usatoday.com/weather/resources/askjack/archives-thunderstorms.htm

I have a huge Willow tree in my front yard that stands about ten or so feet higher than my two story house. The main trunk of the tree splits off into two trunks about half way up and the branches spread to cover half my yard (which is two lots wide), my driveway, and some branches near the top of the tree get close to the front of my roof. This weekend one of those two trunks broke about halfway up and portions of the tree landed on my roof. One branch, about four feet long, split off from the tree on both sides (so it had pointed edges on both sides), sliced like a spear through my roof and right through the ceiling of my daughter's bedroom and was lying against her bed. Another branch appears to have crashed through the roof and the ceiling of the same room but apparently rolled off the roof as it wasn't in the room. A large portion of the trunk of the tree was lying right where I typically park my car and would have went right through my car's roof without a doubt. Happily we weren't home when this happened.

Mother nature don't play.

Glenn
09-15-2008, 12:37 PM
Sounds like a close call.

We've got huge old trees all around our house.

We've only had two come down so far. Luckily (not only did it miss hitting anything) the biggest one was right on the property line, so the neighbors spilt the cost with us to have it cleaned up ($500+).

I've got a couple of them that I'm keeping my eye on. If it wasn't so damn expensive, I'd have a few of them removed just to be safe.

I did have my new (at the time) chain link fence damaged pretty badly a few years ago, too.

Homeowners insurance is a joke on that shit too, unless the repairs are super expensive (like yours sound, Fool). I had them tell me that, yeah, they'll pay for it, but I'd probably give it right back in premium increases.

Parts of this post are poorly worded, I'm struggling today, sorry.

"Video no longer available"

Fool
09-15-2008, 03:13 PM
I think Mxy missed the explanation a while back. Apparently, Youtube allows people to restrict the video's they post from being embedded on other sites (or something similar). That's why I asked you to include the link to the video in the other thread Mxy. A lot of your video's aren't showing up (well they show but they can't be watched here) because of this. If you add the link along with embedding the video people can just hit the link if the video shows up as "video no longer available".

Ahhh... 1 s33 n0w...

I use Firefox + a couple security extensions involving Flash (NoScript, Stop Autoplay) because I'm not a trusting person. With those extensions, Flash animations are opened in a way where it's not obvious to YouTube that it's embedded (probably by stripping the HTTP-Referer header, but I haven't explored what heuristics YouTube uses to determine what's "embedded").

So, it's always worked for me without my having to think about it, and I assumed that it worked for everyone else too. :)

Uncle Mxy
09-16-2008, 02:14 PM
Thinking about it some, there's a very slight chance it's not either of those extensions. It might give me a free pass due to some of the other HTTP headers I mangle with. But I'd rather enjoy the pleasant weather today than pretend I know anything about technology.

Uncle Mxy

If the animations are still in your browser or proxy cache, you should be able to see it because you're not really hitting the network to fetch the content.

Its weird after living in Tahoe and getting 4 or 5 feet of snow and then another couple feet in a day or so hearing that a foot and half criples some places. We would end up with at least 20 feet of snow.

Uncle Mxy
01-10-2014, 08:25 AM
I think the wind is getting shortchanged in what happened here. There were sustained 25 mph winds in addition to the snow and cold. There's nothing like snow-blowing a foot and a half of snow-drifted snow in -45 F windchill.

Vinny
01-10-2014, 02:26 PM
Yeah, Chicago too. you could shovel everything and an hour later it would all have blown right back like you never even shoveled.

Actually, I think it was more people using snow-blowers where it would blow back...Shovelers pack it up more...but you get the idea...

MikeMyers
01-10-2014, 10:52 PM

Uncle Mxy
