Big Man Japan is a strange slow movie, a deconstructionist take on the "Japanese giant good guys fighting monsters" genre. There's lots of good ideas, but they're poorly laid out. The last few minutes are a hoot for anyone who digs old-school Ultraman, but otherwise I can't recommend it.

Uncle Mxy

You know that the straight-to-video Princess Of Mars (with Traci Lords) is a crap movie when there's no nudity, and only line you can remember is "That was her pee bucket!" It also stars Antonio Sabato Jr. as a jarhead. Oh boy. The sound is kinda fucked up (dialogue too soft, explosions too loud) so you have to fuck with the volume all the time if you care about the shit dialogue. The production values bounce up and down. My sense is that a (somewhat) bigger budget production was green-lighted, then scaled back as the production actually happened.

Pharaoh

Mxy, you seem like a super intelligent motherfucker so the obvious question has to be asked:

Why are you watching a non-porn movie with Traci Lords?

Uncle Mxy
02-24-2010, 07:27 AM
Because I watched pretty much every porn movie Traci Lords has ever been in, and I keep hoping she'll return to form.

Also, I read the John Carter Barsoom novels and had a morbid curiosity for how badly they'd fuck up the adaptation. But that's boring so it belongs in white text.

Be happy when old porn stars keep their clothes on. Porn miles are hard on the chassis, it's like being a taxi cab.

That alone is enough for me to need to see this movie.

I grabbed "Extract" out of the Red Box this afternoon and we're about to watch it. Should we bother?

I hate you all. You had the ability to save an hour of my time and no one stepped up.

Turned it off 3/4 of the way through.

geerussell

Way to pay it forward, now I know not to watch Extract.

Uncle Mxy
02-24-2010, 01:08 PM
I missed that post about Extract -- the title isn't that memorable to me, and I was in a "watching weird movies" groove, hoping to occasionally find shinola amongst the shit. I saw Extract awhile back, when it first came out on DVD and Netflix. I might've led you astray because I thought it was "ok". If you go into Extract expecting Office Space, you'll be sorely disappointed. If you go into Extract expecting something on the order of a decent King Of The Hill episode, you'll do ok. It's blandly pleasant but, like the title, not especially memorable.

Tried to watch In Bruges last night, is it really that boring or was I just too tired?? Made it about 30 minutes before giving up, should I try again? It got great reviews.

Run Robot Run! is a movie set in the near-future where a guy is being replaced by a lifelike robot. There's nothing _horribly_ wrong with it, other than the fact that it's not much of anything and it's not good enough to recommend. It's not funny enough to be a comedy. It's not science-fictiony enough to provoke good thinking. It's not filled with sufficiently pretty people or images to be worth watching with the mute button. The satire was more like a worn tire. It's... ehhhh... Halfway through, I had fun playing it at 1.5x speed because that made it go faster, to give you some idea of how limp it is.

Anybody seen The Maiden Heist?

Uncle Mxy
03-07-2010, 06:50 PM
Go watch Fireball!

It's a bloody entertaining Thai martial arts movie where the field of combat is a basketball court. The first team that scores... wins! This is how basketbrawl was meant to be played -- full contact with weapons, no pesky refs or foul shots, UFA on steroids. The martial artists aren't quite Tony Jaa-level, but the action is non-stop and it's well-shot and well worth the rental.

wont spoil anything, but for my taste they set up a movie that could have gone in a ton of great directions and chose poorly.

dont kill yourself to see this. not terrible, but somewhat of a let down. atleast for me.

You'd think with the pedigree (DiCaprio, Scorsese), this should've been a winter flick. But, if the film is no good, they'll bump it to Feb or March when competition is light. Almost always a red flag (except for Silence of the Lambs)

just watched hurt locker. oscar worthy? not most years. the only scene i thought was great was the sniper scene. but the movie hit every note it attempted. it was more a meditation on being human (or a certain type of human) than a war movie.

really good, though. definitly worth a rental.

tried watching the thin red line. actually second attempt, the first was ten years ago and i think i made it 20 min that time.

this time i gave up 1 1/2 hrs in, and even was drinking wine. the first movie i've watched with wine that i didnt enjoy (usually a sure bet tactic).

anyone like that movie, here? its the rating i've found on imdb that i most disagree with. 7.5 is pretty respectable, and in my eyes this think is pretentious trash.

it actually wouldnt have been terrible on mute, making up your own plot along with good cinemotography.

finally saw wallstreet 2. i was prepared for a pile of shit and it wasnt bad. the ending was, and there were lots of bad parts. but i think the good outweighed the bad. even shia labouf was fine.

my favorite part was his stupid fiancée working at the liberal blog. i dont know why, but that part killed me. something about her and a bunch of other girls hanging out and selling their opinions for a living in "wallstreet" was too funny.

Ping Pong Playa is well worth seeing, especially for the peeps on this board! An immature Chinese young adult with dreams of being the next Kobe Bryant is roped into the family business of ping pong. Lots of funny moments and basketball sensibilities! Note that it's about 25% in Cantonese, but it's easy to follow... mostly it's Cantonese and English mixed together, the way you often hear it spoken here.

just watched "hud". loved it. im a huge paul newman fan but this one stood out.

i think cool hand look is a little bit overrated. i liked this, the hustler, and even cat on a hot tin roof better than cool hand luke.

honestly, "hud" was amazing. i cant believe its not on more top movie lists. in fact, i stumbled upon it. why isnt this considered more of a classic than it is?

finally caught "the virgin suicides". little biased, cuz its about the old town, but i liked it. generally speaking, dont like sophia coppala or her work, but hard to imagine anyone else putting that movie together as well. not saying it was the greatest thing ever (and possibly a chick flick?). thinking about reading the book, since the writer was actually from grosse pointe, and i think the source had alot to do with the movie's strength. also, this movie probably could be about any suburban town (or urban, i guess), but it felt like it really was specific to grosse pointe.

pretty good movie, great soundtrack, and lots of young future stars to keep an eye out for. fair warning, the movies kind of a bummer!

watched "the fighter". pretty good, maybe the second best boxing movie of all time.

raging bull, of course is number one.

others ive seen include the rockies, million dollar baby, ali, hurricane. not including documentaries, of which "when we were kings" (ali), and "unforgivable blackness" (jack johnson) were both excellent.

hurricane was meh. ali wasnt anything special. million dollar baby was pretty good, but i felt like it was a good boxing flick for 3/4, then it was hijacked out of nowhere by a very fervent political message, which i didnt like at all.

i like the rocky movies, BUT the fight scenes in them detract from the quality. im not a boxing snob, but anyone who's scene even one fight can see how absurd the fight scenes are. in any one round, theres typically enough damage unleashed to kill an army of men, yet rocky and his opponent always just walk back to their corners and have their trainers yell at them for not trying hard enough. in the fights, rocky could detonate a nuclear bomb and his opponent would get up if it werent round 15. really detracts from the drama, at least for me.

so i'd have to call the fighter #2 of everything i've seen. they did a nice job of telling something slightly different, as its hard to come up with an interesting, novel storyline when it comes to boxing.

Uncle Mxy

Already saw the Pooh movie. It's quality. My thoughts are in white text. Pooh is more true to his character as good natured but slow witted (Owl as well, not so much Rabbit), a lot more "interaction with the book pages" that I always like. Solid all around. Only complaint is that it relied too much on the standard Pooh tropes (Eeyore's tail, Owl's absentmindedness, Christopher Robin going to school). It's essentially a reboot.

b-diddy

watched "notorious". h-cock, grant, birgman, and claude rains. loved it. grant is a government agent, claude rains is a runaway nazi war criminal living in rio de jenaro after the war. ingrid is the daughter of a recently convicted nazi who grant uses to get close to rains and his nazi buddies.

they dont make em like that anymore. but while grant was excellent, i couldnt help but feel that bogsy should have had the role.

watched "when we were kings". 3rd time ive seen it. phenomenal. but i read on imdb that they kind of mythologize the foreman fight. so i watched the fight on youtube and they're right. wwwk frames the fight as ali going for the hr in the first round, then going into total defense mode till the KO. really, he doesnt just play rope a dope the whole time. yes, he's defensive. but he probably won or drew just about every round of the fight. liston may have won a round.

still, when we were kings is awesome. by far my favorite documentary ever.

Love it... which is why I own it lol

Seriously... it's weird enough and interesting enough to keep me coming back every now and then

I won't go into the plot and stuff for those that haven't seen it but..

If you haven't seen it you should

Alex Proyas is an Aussie too - did The Crow, Knowing and I, Robot - make of that what you will.

One could view it as a detective story... the main dude trying to work out who he is and just WTF is going on..

I find it very interesting... and interesting movies are hard to find

Uncle Mxy

I agree with Pharaoh 100% here. Dark City is a great movie. When I first saw it, I had no idea of what to expect plot-wise and that's probably as it should be. I'm pretty sure I rented it simply because Jennifer Connelly was in it. Stylistically, I'd say it's two parts Rod Serling, one part Terry Gilliam, if you're on the edge of whether or not to take a chance on it.

I know you broes dig my movie advice, so I'll implore you to see the best movie made in maybe the last 5-10 years... The Lego Movie.

And I'm not shitting you.

I've seen it about 10 times now (BOUGHT THE BLU RAY) and even convinced some of the soulless hipster millennials without kids that I work with to watch it and at least two of them became completely addicted to it.

I never steer y'all wrong, right?
That's t\like the most popular hipster movie of all time, I have doubts there was much convincing involved. Best buy is giving away free skinny jeans with them for chrissakes...

I got the pass in the mail at work from the local movie chain. Glad it has my name on it and can only be used by me, because the receptionist that handles all the mail would have probably swiped it. It was sent along with a guilt-trippy letter from the theater chain owner looking for a charitable donation to his pet cause.

Don't get tricked into watching "Boyhood" like I did!

Sure, the premise is unique and interesting (they filmed it over the course of like 12 years or something, and you get to see the cast grow up and get older) but there's basically no point to it, it just seemed like they were filming the lives of these people and it's largely uninteresting. I'm not sure why it's so highly acclaimed, I guess the critics just fell for the gimmick. My wife really pushed to have us watch it, and we pulled the plug about 3/4 of the way through it, in total agreement that it sucked.

No, keep the ad-blocker on. It's just a site to stream movies. Never give any of these sites an email address let alone a cc# (jesus Vinny, what kind of a death seeker are you?). I've used this site for years and never created an account (had to go to the site to even see if you could do something like that since I guess I just look past that link at this point). It just holds links to file storing sites where people have stored screening versions of films (among other movies) that are out in theaters. That's what I use it for mainly, movies I'm too lazy to get out to the theater to see. For example, Gla's Nightcrawler is uploaded to several sites (link to solar movies page listing the various streaming links (http://www.solarmovie.is/watch-nightcrawler-2014.html))) any of which will get you to a stream of the film (direct link to the first streaming site on that list "vodlocker" (http://www.solarmovie.is/link/play/3757432/))

I'm sure I've posted the link here before but it was probably years ago and who knows where. The length of time the site has been around without a url change is pretty impressive. Far longer than the various no-pay sites I use to stream television shows. Those things typically last only a year or two before they get shut down and you have to find where they've relocated to on the net.

I was meaning to read The Martian, but then I heard it was being turned into a movie so I said "screw it, I'll watch the movie".

Now that the movie's come out, I'm so-so on seeing the movie... weird.

Glenn
10-04-2015, 07:41 PM
The Martian was fantastic, IMO. And I'm a movie cynic. Damon was really good, and it was visually stunning, of course. It does require a bit of suspended reality, but what movie doesn't?

Only downside was Jeff Daniels and Kristin Wiig. I like Daniels but his parts were the only ones that had me thinking "okay, this is bad".

I rolled my eyes a bit at the obvious effort they made to be all-inclusive, diversity-wise, but I guess the effort is at least commendable, even if distracting.

One of the best films that I've seen in recent memory, pretty powerful.

Fool
10-04-2015, 08:46 PM
The book is apparently ridiculously inclusive. Every characters is a different ethnic stereotype.

Surprised you found it really powerful. You might not want to read them but these are just some of the moments I didn't think landed or things I thought took away from a movie that, in general, I enjoyed.

I couldn't find the spoiler tags so I just white texted it. I rolled my eyes at the letter to his parents where he says he's dying for something bigger but never actually says what that bigger thing is (great we all get to decide what we think he's dying for!) He just didn't feel all that isolated to me. Wiig's character is pretty useless in the entire movie. How do you make a movie like this and not make the moment they realize he's alive a bigger deal. That was a real let down. The "shit we actually have a problem now" moment is far better after the "OMG he's not dead moment." Not even the rest of the crew finding out he was alive was a good moment. The Golden Eye bad guy tells them is a terribly awkward way and then defuses any blow back in the actual moment with "I wanted to tell you guys but they wouldn't let me." The Donald Glover thing is set up entirely by shots of him (who we otherwise have no connection to at all) waiting next to computers and servers like he's doing these big complex calculations but then as soon as he's in the meeting where he's telling everyone about his plan, everybody is like "yeah, those are correct calculations" because apparently computers are slower than humans at math. Then what he ends up proposing seems so ordinary. Hey, let's slingshot around the Earth. Really? No one else considers that option? I mean, we already do that with satellites all the time. Then the crew decision is supposed to be so emotional and fraught when we've seen them for all of 5 minutes of screen time (so no real connection to them) and they make the obvious choice that is so obvious even the writer has to admit it by including a character that demonstrates it from the beginning. Yeah, no one's choice was tougher than the Latino dude's. Not even the guy with a family that you showed after the decision. Everyone says yes immediately, even some dude who hates Matt Damon says yes immediately. The astronaut who gets kissed (whatever his job was other than getting booted from doing the cool chair rescue thing) does an untethered space walk that no one watches, because apparently it's pretty run of the mill or something, only to end up outside of a door that the chick from House of Cards just walks up to from the inside and opens? Why didn't the space walk guy just walk through the ship to that door? His buddy who left him just before he did the walk is the one who made the bomb with the House of Cards chick, so obviously he had plenty of time to make it.

Glenn
10-04-2015, 09:16 PM
LOL, those are all fair points, but I guess I chalk that stuff up to as part of suspending reality

Fool
10-05-2015, 03:46 PM
With all of its acclaim and zeitgeist-tapping luck, The Martian also looks to have some long legs. And another factor must be considered: Do we have a Best Picture nominee here? After all, Gravity opened big with similarly great reviews and it earned a Best Picture nod and seven actual Oscars. And consider the two faces of the film: Despite being fixtures in the starry firmament, Damon has not won an acting Oscar2 and Scott has never won Best Director despite three nominations. The Academy loves a winner and would love an excuse to throw a mainstream studio film with a legitimate chance of winning in the mix, as opposed to another indie film that a tiny fraction of the American audience has been able to see in theaters.

My point here is not to handicap its awards potential, but to recognize that the film’s combination of good word-of-mouth and early success could kick off a virtuous Oscar circle: The Martian opened big, which makes it a serious Oscar contender, which makes everyone go see it, which makes it an even more serious Oscar contender. Whether the For Your Consideration campaigns are worth the expenditure is debatable, but with a mainstream, widely applauded hit like The Martian, all of that extra hype and buzz does generally translate to more money. And for once, it seems as if Hollywood’s broken system actually works.

I enjoyed both the book (which I read awhile back) and the movie. The book is far better than the movie at addressing most of Fool's points. Based on the book, I was expecting more of a Tom Hanks "Cast Away" vibe than what I got. The digital version of the book was on sale for $2 about a week before the movie. I bought it then but haven't started on it yet. It's getting close to the top of the list though. The book started out self-published (I assume on Amazon) and I recently read a series that started out the same way (self-published then got hugely popular and was picked up by a major publication and printed, only the series wasn't turned into a movie). It was called the Wool Series. I really liked the first book of that series but by the end of the third (and last) book I was just reading to finish the series.

I finally got around to watching The Fly last night/this morning. It was good! The imagery is gross and Jeff Goldblum sells the gradual transformation of his body and mind effectively. The anti-cult themes perhaps made themselves a bit too obvious, and the former boyfriend character went through some jarring shifts in how sympathetically he was portrayed, but overall it was appropriately horrific.

Nice review, Mr. Oobir! Might be the longest movie review we've ever had in the WTFDetroit Movie Review Thread.

I also recently watched Meatcleaver Massacre (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076380/). It's, uh, not good. No one is even killed by a meat cleaver!

Was somebody at least maimed by a meatcleaver?

Let my wife pick tonight's flick and she chose Manchester by the Sea? Am I doomed?
Lee Chandler is a brooding, irritable loner who works as a handyman for a Boston apartment block. One damp winter day he gets a call summoning him to his hometown, north of the city. His brother's heart has given out suddenly, and he's been named guardian to his 16-year-old nephew. As if losing his only sibling and doubts about raising a teenager weren't enough, his return to the past re-opens an unspeakable tragedy.

Michael J Fox's jump-shot free throws in Teen Wolf might be the most ridiculous thing of all time. 10/10.

A friend of mine owed me a favor, and paid for me to see Ghost In The Shell.
Otherwise, I certainly could've waited for it to be on Netflix or whatever.
Upon watching it, I find myself thinking "damn, he wasted his money".
It's not nearly as trippy as the source material -- it's downright procedural.
Think "Blade Runner" knock-off and you have the right idea.

I'm off to see Spider-Man: Homecoming tonight, which I anticipate will be.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is all kinds of awesome!
Michael Keaton is really the best villain since Loki!
I haven't laughed so hard at a PSA since I was a kid!
