I'm in love with you girl 'cause you're on my mind,
you're the one I think about most every time.
And when you crack a smile and ev'rything you do
don't you understand girl this love is true.
You're so sickin' hand, lone sweetin' thing,
that come up like poison up on your skin.
It lightens up my day and that's also true,
together we are one, seperated we are two.
To make it all mine, all mine is my desire,
cause you contain a quality, you that I admire.
To put it playin' simple, you rule my world,
so try to understand:

I'm in love girl, I'm so in love girl,
I'm just in love girl, and this is true.

Girl you know it's true,
uh uh uh, I love you.
Yes you know it's true,
uh uh uh, I love you.

Girl you know it's true,
my love - is for you.
Girl you know it's true,
my love - is for you.

This sizzling thing girl, I can't explain,
my emotions starts up when I hear your name.
Maybe a sweet, sweet voice would ring in my ear,
it stimulate my senses, girl when you are near.
And with your positive emotion love making enjoy,
there's no need to bust, it's like a girl and a boy.
These feelings I keep, I often wondering why,
so I thought I might discuss this ? is you and I.

Now what you wear, I don't care,
how ? before, the reason that I like a
girl is for what you are.
If I ? think about it, you rule my world,
so try to understand:

I'm in love girl, I'm so in love girl,
I'm just in love girl, and this is true.

Girl you know it's true,
uh uh uh, I love you.
Yes you know it's true,
uh uh uh, I love you.

Girl you know it's true,
my love - is for you.

I'm in love with you girl, I'm
in love with you girl [ last
word repeats ]
I'm in love with you, I'm in love with
you, I'm in love with you.

Girl you know it's true,

Nas is probably the only guy who can touch Rakim lyrically IMO.

P.S. I'm wearing rope chains right now.
Nas is cool but they're two very different styles. Rakim wasn't about anything at all except taking his rhymes to a whole new level of creativity and perfection. He's like the ultimate notebooker. I think of him as like the Beatles of hip hop - other bands may be able to move you more, or deliver a meaningful message, but the Beatles were the ultimate song craftsmen of their genre. When the Beatles make a song, you can't imagine it turning out any different, because it's as perfect as it can be. Rakim is just like that - in fact, he's arguably superior because his delivery was so good, whereas none of the Beatles were technically outstanding musicians.

Nas is all over the map, though. He's trying to deliver messages and tell stories. He'd be like the Bob Dylan of hip hop. He's trying to convey a sense of place and time and personality. He only cares about his delivery as much as it allows him to get across his idea. He's got a much wider variety of interests. He's more like a poet than an MC.

Timone
04-21-2008, 03:58 PM
I'm not comparing the two, but I'm saying that Nas may be just at good at what he does as Rakim is at what he does.

Since Rakim Allah obviously had influence on Nasir Jones, comparisons will be inevitable. But like I said, I'm not comparing them.

Of course Rakim is the G.O.A.T. Anyone who tries to say otherwise is foolin' themselves.

FWIW, Nas is #2 on my list.

I sometimes forget how totally bleak Illmatic was. His lyrics are so incredible, but he paints a picture of the ghetto that's really depressing. I guess that's how it is sometimes - the sad, ugly shit that people are afraid to think about just seems so much more truthful than the happy news. I gotta break it up with some Common or something just so I don't ruin a good mood.

Big Swami

Nas was pretty much overshadowed back in the day.
Yeah, but not that much to white people. He was like Kaiser Soze to the suburbs. He was more legend than man. You didn't really see him much on TV or hear him on the radio much because he's not exactly media-friendly. He got huge mainly from bootlegs and mix tapes. He's one of the very few rappers who really did build his fame from the ground up.

Like I said, his style is kind of dark and brooding on a lot of tracks, but he didn't take it to the hilariously clownish levels that DMX did later. That fucking guy...sheesh.

I always LOL at that song, great to listen to gettin drunk with friends and just yelling the absolutely stupid lyrics.

Timone

Agreed.

Everything they've done is LOL worthy. The sad part about it though is the fact I remember people actually being heavy into them 7-8 years ago.

DrRay, I know you like Dream Theater (I do too), so I was wondering if you've ever listened to Opeth?

I also know that you don't like growling, but even though Opeth are classified as a progressive death metal band, their softer songs (the entire Damnation album is soft songs) are fucking awesome, very similar to Dream Theater's.

DrRay11
05-15-2008, 08:24 PM
Hmmm, no I have definitely heard of them, and you're right I don't like growling, so I will have to give Damnation a listen then. Thanks for the heads up.

No problem. They might not be for everyone (then again, no band is). Their songs are usually long.
