Timone 04-21-2008, 03:25 PM Nas is probably the only guy who can touch Rakim lyrically IMO. P.S. I'm wearing rope chains right now. Timone 04-21-2008, 03:33 PM Welp, might as well pull up the Power Rankings thread... geerussell 04-21-2008, 03:42 PM ^ Does that mean you like the song or something? lol I saw the video the other day on Yo! MTV Raps, which is back or something. Yes. Big Swami 04-21-2008, 03:51 PM Nas is probably the only guy who can touch Rakim lyrically IMO. P.S. I'm wearing rope chains right now. Nas is cool but they're two very different styles. Rakim wasn't about anything at all except taking his rhymes to a whole new level of creativity and perfection. He's like the ultimate notebooker. I think of him as like the Beatles of hip hop - other bands may be able to move you more, or deliver a meaningful message, but the Beatles were the ultimate song craftsmen of their genre. When the Beatles make a song, you can't imagine it turning out any different, because it's as perfect as it can be. Rakim is just like that - in fact, he's arguably superior because his delivery was so good, whereas none of the Beatles were technically outstanding musicians. Nas is all over the map, though. He's trying to deliver messages and tell stories. He'd be like the Bob Dylan of hip hop. He's trying to convey a sense of place and time and personality. He only cares about his delivery as much as it allows him to get across his idea. He's got a much wider variety of interests. He's more like a poet than an MC. Timone 04-21-2008, 03:58 PM I'm not comparing the two, but I'm saying that Nas may be just at good at what he does as Rakim is at what he does. Since Rakim Allah obviously had influence on Nasir Jones, comparisons will be inevitable. But like I said, I'm not comparing them. Of course Rakim is the G.O.A.T. Anyone who tries to say otherwise is foolin' themselves. FWIW, Nas is #2 on my list. Timone 04-21-2008, 04:01 PM But I agree with errything you said, Swam. Big Swami 04-21-2008, 04:52 PM Props to you for having the balls to admit the cuteness that is this story. It's one of my favorite songs. I think it just started as a joke, because Jackson is such a pit. Driving through Jackson, MI and singing a song about how you want to go to Jackson because you're going to have such a good time and get laid...it's laden with irony. His lyrics are so incredible, but he paints a picture of the ghetto that's really depressing. I guess that's how it is sometimes - the sad, ugly shit that people are afraid to think about just seems so much more truthful than the happy news. I gotta break it up with some Common or something just so I don't ruin a good mood. Big Swami 04-22-2008, 08:14 AM Nas was pretty much overshadowed back in the day. Yeah, but not that much to white people. He was like Kaiser Soze to the suburbs. He was more legend than man. You didn't really see him much on TV or hear him on the radio much because he's not exactly media-friendly. He got huge mainly from bootlegs and mix tapes. He's one of the very few rappers who really did build his fame from the ground up. Like I said, his style is kind of dark and brooding on a lot of tracks, but he didn't take it to the hilariously clownish levels that DMX did later. That fucking guy...sheesh. Timone 04-22-2008, 12:14 PM Did you hear? Jerome's niece didn't make it home... Big Swami 04-22-2008, 01:35 PM Yeah, that's the kind of shit I'm talking about when I say "bleak."
