This was my favorite group of all time - 15 years ago.

I haven't even listened to their last album or two, because they seemed to lose their touch... until their latest self-titled disk.

I can't figure out whether I like the lyrics or the music more. Once you listen to this stuff, and dig the author's meaning, it makes it hard to enjoy rap music, and all the talk about killing, bling, bitches and hoes.

There is a marker,... No one sees it cause the sand
Has covered over,... All the messages it kept
Misunderstanding,... What original truth was
And out expanding,... In a faith, but not in love

What went wrong?

Walking tightrope high,... Over moral ground
Seeing visions of,............. Falling up somehow
Do come down

With the living, Let,..... What is living love
So unforgiving, yet,.... Needing forgiveness first

God, what do you say?

Those undecided,........ Needn't have faith to be free
And those misguided, There was a plan for them to be
Now you got both sides Claiming killing in Gods name
But God is nowhere,..... To be found, conveniently

What goes on?

Walking tightrope high,... Over moral ground
Walk the bridges before you burn them down
Do come round

With a living, let,...... What is living love
So unforgiving, yet... Needing forgiveness first

God, what do you say? What do you say?

There is a sickness,...... A sickness coming over me
Like watching freedom,. Being sucked straight out to sea
And the solution?,........ Well, from me far would it be
But the delusion,.......... Is feeling dangerous to me

What goes wrong?

Walking tightrope high,... Over moral ground
Seeing visions of,............. Falling up somehow
Do come down

With a living, let,...... What is living love
So unforgiving, yet... Needing forgiveness first

God, what do you say? What do you say?

Calling out,......... Calling out.
Calling out,......... I'm calling you out.

This one rocks, too:

I used to be a crustacean
In an underwater nation
and I surf in celebration
Of a billion adaptations

Got me a big wave, ride me a big wave, got me a big wave.
Got me a big wave, ride me a big wave, got me a big wave.

I feel the need
Planted in me
Millions of years ago
Can't you see
The oceans size?
Defining time
And tide
Arising
Arms laid upon me
Being so kind
To let me ride

I scream in affirmation
Of connecting dislocations
And exceeding limitations
Be achieving levitation

Got me a big wave, ride me a big wave, got me a big wave.
Got me a big wave, ride me a big wave, got me a big wave.

Got me a ride.
I got me a ride.

As does this one, although it makes me sad for families of those who are serving in Iraq.

How long must she stand
Before the ground, it gives way
To an endless fall
She can feel this
War on her face
Stars on her pillow
Folding in darkness
Begging for slumber

I'm not blind
I can see it coming
Looks like lightning
In my child's eye

I'm not frantic
I can feel it coming
Violently shakes
My body

Her son's slanted
Always giving her
The sideways eye
An empty chair where dad sits
How loud can silence get?
And mom, she reassures
To contain him
But it's becoming a lie

She tells herself
And everyone else
Father is risking
His life for our freedoms

I'm not blind
I can see it coming
Looks like lightning
In my childs eye

I'm not frantic
I can feel it coming
Darling you'll save me
If you save yourself

If you save yourselfPearl Jam's lyrics either make no sense or are just plain dull, but overall as a band they are great. Eddie Vedder has a great voice.

Steve:

The lyrics aren't that hard.

Marker in the Sand is about how the concept of religion has been twisted over time to forget about love, in favor of blind faith. It is also about the negative aspects of religion, such as moral self-righteousness, persecution, and war.

Big Wave is about how he really feels his connection to the world when he surfs, because human beings evolved from the sea, and its like returning to your roots.

Army Reserve is about a woman whose husband is in the army reserve, fighting in Iraq. She's stuck at home with the kids, struggling to keep the family intact, and lying to her kids that their daddy is fighting for our freedoms, when the war really has nothing to do with freedom. She's saying the way to save me is not to fight for my freedom in Iraq, but to stay alive long enough to make it home to make sure your kids don't have to grow up without a father.

Are those songs new? I don't listen to Pearl Jam's new stuff. They kinda sucked after Ten and No Code, except for a few songs. I can understand some of their old song lyrics, but still they arent that great. I watched the story tellers thing on VH1 and it made me understand some of the songs more. Like "World Wide Suicide" and "Better Man". And I knew Alive was about his father not really being his father but his step because I read it some where, but I would have never would have thought that any way. They make it hard to understand unless they are dull and simple like "Jeremy". Not that they suck, but they are wierd.

Here are the lyrics, if you wanna sing along:

Niggaz in my face
Damn near er' day
Askin a million questions like
Jock where ya stay
Tell 'em collegepark
Where they chop cars
Eat 20 grand spend a grand at the bar
Jest bought a zone jays on my feet
I'm on that patron so get like me
69 cutlass wit the bucket seat
Beat in my trunk bought it just for the freaks
Catch me in the hood posted at the sto
Pistol in my lap on the phone countin dough
If a girl choose let her do her thang
Just like her mama nice ass, nice brain
Er'body love me I'm so fly
Niggaz throw the duces er'time I ride by
I know ya wonder why
I'm so cool
Don't ask me just do what cha do (ok)

[Chorus 2X]
Meet me in the trap its goin down
Meet me in the mall its goin down
Meet me in the club its goin down
Any where ya meet me guaranteed to go down

Verse numba 2 do the damn thang
Cubes on my neck pockets full of ben frank
When I'm in the mall hoes just pause
I pop a few tags give me that on the wall
Time to flip the work make the block bump
Boys from the hood call me black Donald Trump
Dope boi magic seven days a week
Numba one record long as nitty on the beat
Oh I thank they like me betta yet I know
Lights camera action when I walk through the door
Niggaz know my crew we certified stars
Valet in the front 'bout 35 cars
Bitches in the back
Black beamer coups
Girls like girls time to recruit
If ya got a problem say it to my face
We can knuckle up any time any place

Chorus

Time to set it off let these nigga know
Have ya every seen a Chevy wit the butterfly doors?
I ride real slow no need to speed
Gotta make sure ya see the buckets on my feet
Feds on my trail but they don't thank I know
I keep my hands clean cuz I never touch dope
Every time I see 'em look 'em in the eye
Ask 'em how I know its me surprise!
Put it in the air rep where ya stay
Take a step back blow the kush in they face
Stuntin is a habit let 'em see the karats
I'ma make it rain nigga I ain't scared to share it

I just re-upped my XM subscription for another 6 months.

I'm mostly listening to the main four sports talk stations (ESPN, ESPNNEWS, Fox Sports Radio, Sporting News) or MLB games. If they are all on break at the same time, I'll scan the 100 or so music channels and try to find something that fits my mood. Usually Fungus 53 (Punk/Ska), Liquid Metal 42 (rock), one of the three comedy channels or Air America.

Really the only thing I listen to on the "over the air" radio anymore is Jim Rome, and I hardly even do that anymore since I got XM.

At times you have a very unlady like waaaaay of running OUT!

You're on this date with meeee
The pickins haaaave been lush!
And yet before this evening is ooover, you might give me the brush!

You might forget your manners
You might refuse to staaaaay-
and so the best that I can do is praaaaay

Luck be a lady to-nite!
Luck a be a lady to-nite!
Luck if you've ever been a lady to begin with-
LUCK be a ladyyy tonight

Luck let a gentlemannnn seee
how nice a dame you can be
Iiii know the way you've treated other guys you've been with
LUCK be a lady with meeee

A lady doesn't leave her escort-
it isn't fair
and it's not nice!
A lady doesn't eander all overrrr the room,
and blow on some other guy's dice!

Let's keep this party polite
Never get ouuut of my sight!
Stick with me baby
I'm the fella you came in with
Luck be a lady tonight!

Luck, let a gentlemaaaan see
just how nice, how nice a a dame you can beee
I know the way you've treated other guys you've been with-
yeah luck be a lady with meeee

A lady doesn't leave her escort-
It isn't fair...
and it's not nice
A lady doesn't wanderrr all ovvverrrr the roooom
and blow on some other guys dice

So let's ...keep the party polite!

Bubbles:
Man, you are wrong! Just think, white guys are making all kinds of headway into the prejudice we face due to the lack of "cool" in our genes.
To wit:
Steve Nash: Hoorible hair, he has no deltoids, probably wears a size 8.5 shoe, can't dunk, but he's the reigning MVP of the NBA! Plus, he's Canadian, which is like saying Steve Urkel thinks you're a nerd.

Eminem: One of the leading rappers of his generation. Of course, he's got that whole "acting black" thing down to a tee, but you've got to do what you've got to do. He has even got his ex wife telling everyone his penis is the size of a crayola crayon, which, of course means that it is probably only half that big.

Rex Chapman: I believe he is the first white man under 6'10 who could dunk. He also won numerous slam dunk competitions. Of course, he was drummed out of the NBA because he couldn't perform the stereotypical role for white guys in the NBA: make free throws and hit 25 foot jumpers.

My Brother's neighbor Tony: A virtual unknown, but he has been prodigious in another pursuit normally reserved for black NBA players: He has EIGHT children with four women (oh yes, he cheated and married three of them, but at least numbers 7 and 8, the twins, came while he was cheating on wife number three with the lady who lives behind him).

Bubbles, I tell you, there is plenty of hope for the AWG who feels he may be able to one day do such things as rap, dunk, dance, or dress like an idiot.

I too gave the new Linkin Park album a chance, and while it is slightly better than their previous two releases and quite different, it still doesn't excite me that much. After giving the album about five listens, this is what I have to say... "In Pieces" trumps everything else on the album, IMO. Hands Held High is basically Fort Minor... The only songs I like besides In Pieces would have to be "No More Sorrow" and "The Little Things Give You Away." Everything else is just too boring and repetitive for me.

I think it's Herman Miller that recently came out with a device that attaches to your phone at work and when you are talking on it, somebody can be standing right next to you and they can't hear a word.

It's a pretty cool concept for the cubicle environment.

It was pretty hard to find last I checked, but if you get a chance, look for an early nineties band named Clawhammer. They covered the entire "Are We Not Men? We are Devo!" album. Good stuff. If you're interested, I'll see if I have it at home still (I know I had the LP, not sure if I ever got it on CD or digital) and will send it to you.
