What we'll be doing this year is student teaching all year at Saginaw Arthur Hill (defending Class A basketball champs) while taking classes at SVSU at night to finish our certification.

One of the main reasons I'm looking forward to teaching at Arthur Hill. It'll be good to be associated with a HS that's actually competitive in sports. If any of our major sports teams finished higher than dead last, we were lucky.

“PITCHING—WHERE HAS IT GONE?”
Pitching Is The ART of Challenging Hitters!


Since I have been watching the game of baseball for a long time and did play, I think that I can sound off about the lack of “pitching” on our Tigers staff. I am not talking about “pitching stuff”. I am totally confused at the things that I see.
Now I am going to demonstrate with this BLOG with our Detroit pitchers, this is pretty much the theory that is going on in the game today; the following are the real reasons why the pitchers today throw so many pitches into the 5th and 6th innings.
I am talking about pitching, the “art of pitching”. Just because you have good stuff, does not make you a good pitcher. It would be nice if sometime soon our pitchers would “pitch” rather than rely on their “Stuff” all of the time. If we all had “good stuff” all the time, there would be 30 game winners each year and that is not the case, hell we can’t barely have a 20 game winner.
Let me give you the example:
When Lolich, McLain, Gibson, Marichal, Koufax, Drysdale, Lonborg, Palmer and a whole bunch more were pitching, we threw 110 pitches or less in most games, but we did that in 9 innings, today, because of their reluctance to challenge hitters and pitch in a proper application, they throw 110 pitches in 5-6 innings. There is no reason for that kind of labor. It is all about theory and the application of that theory.
I played for two of the greatest pitching coaches of all time, Charlie Dressen and Johnny Sain. Both had similar philosophies and they are the following:
You never throw a change up when you are ahead of a hitter, in other words, if the count is 0-2, 1-2, you don’t throw it off speed. You never give a guy in the HOLE a chance to hit it somewhere. You just don’t let the sucker up, it is that simple.
Now, if you are behind the hitter, 2-0, 3-2, 1-0 and or 2-1, the change-up, fork ball, slip pitch and or a slow curveball is a great pitch.
I see one pitcher after another with the Tigers and other teams throwing changeups to hitters that they are ahead of in the count?
Where the hell did this theory come from? It sucks; it will not work in the long or near run.
Look at our records of our pitchers. The other nite, our star right hander, Verlander was in a game 4-4 and with 2 guys on and ahead in the count, threw an off-speed curve ball and of course, hung it and the Cleveland hitter, after barely fouling off the previous pitch, a good fastball, hit it deep into the left center field seats. Where does that come from? Is this Pudge just calling pitches to call pitches? Are there pre-game meetings? Does anyone pay attention? Is it just coffee time? Where is the thought process?
Pudge is suppose to be able to see when a hitter is behind on a swing, I wonder if Pudge is watching all the time? And at a minimum, the pitcher if he is really watching should be able to see when a hitter is getting around on his fast ball. For some reason, that does not seem to be the case with our staff.
I hate to see talent wasted, it really disgusts me and frustrates me in a major way. I scream at the TV and or the radio.
We have too many good arms to continue to have our guys get their brains beat out with off speed pitches. None of them have the kinds of off speed pitches that you can throw when you are ahead of the hitters.
I threw one off speed change-up in my entire career after being told not to by Charlie Dressen; by the way, Dressen had such successes as Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale and dozens of others. The hitter that I was warned not to throw the change-up to was Mickey Mantle, but I had to find out myself. I knew better, sure I did!
So when I had Mickey 0-2, no balls and 2 strikes, I threw a change-up, at least 6 inches off the plate and Mickey hit it 9 miles into the 3rd deck at Yankee Stadium. I got hell for it, not a hit on the ass and a nice going from the manager, pure hell, a yelling at me tirade that I never forgot.
I think at times that our manager and his staff is for some reason are afraid to yell and chastise some of the decisions that our pitchers make on the mound or Pudge fails to do. Quit babying these guys, these guys are making millions and not learning anything.
I think yelling at a guy for making more than a few mistakes deserve to get a little hell from the manager. If you get chastised in some form, are you not more likely not to do it again?
You should learn something every time you step on the mound, but that is not the case with our current staff, they do it time and time again.
Guys, major leaguers can hit that fast ball, there never has been one that can’t be hit, none!! And the change-ups that some of our guys are throwing are missing the mark, most of the change-ups that our guys are throwing are causing them to change their motions and therefore, tipping off the hitters to something else is coming. And then WHACKO TIME!!!!
Additionally, watch Verlander and Bonderman and some of the others including Zamaya or as he is called in Detroit, ZOOM-ZOOM, look at how they land after throwing the ball to the plate. At times, Bonderman’s back is looking at home plate or at least on a 45 degree angle. Folks, that ain’t the way to field your position.
They are all over the place. I fear one of them are going to get a line drive in the head cause they can’t possibly see in a real way the ball coming at them.
The MASTER RULES given to most of us on the Tigers when we had Dressen and Sain were the following, 1) Never throw that change-up ahead of a hitter and 2) THROW STRIKES, get ahead in the count. 3) Let the hitters hit the ball that is why you have 8 guys out there with you, to catch the mistakes and pitches that you make.
Sounds easy right? Then where are the 20 game winners again this year? Man, I don’t understand it anymore, I am missing something.
They whoever they are, always say, everything goes full circle. Now if that is the case, can’t we start getting near the circle?
Just because you have great stuff does not make you a winner or a pitcher. Strikeouts are not where it is at. Winning is the answer.
