this is a deep enough draft where I think it's a great move even if it costs a future #1 (with better protection than joe had!) as well as cash.

we should be trying really hard to trade josh smith for a nice pick but if not, then buy into the 1st round and target someone like stauskas. the kid is a baller and with his shooting, smarts, and high basketball IQ, he would be a great complimentary player to a guy like Drummond.

I said we didn't WILDLY overpay. yes his pricetag got a bit inflated given the destination and the fact that FAs get overpaid, period. but it's not the type of wild overpaying that comes back to haunt a franchise IMO. he's a good player and will do well. it's not like we're building the franchise around him nor does his contract reflect that. but he's one of those sleepers FAs that I think people will look back and see it as a good signing.

he was not going to come cheap given the demand for shooters and his upside. it's not a bad deal IMO.

This is pretty much how I felt. Sometimes I think it's ok to lose a bit in business if you know it's a step back to take a few more steps forward. Pistons shouldn't offer him a max contract and he believes that he might get one or come really close somewhere else. I can believe they probably weren't going to get good trade value for him either.

Ballmer over paying surely helped some but it's the television contract and the expected labor peace that helps a lot more. Plus the weakness of the player union and the increased revenue the owners negotiated back from the players in the last CBA. The biggest thing that helped the TV deal is the continued development of the internet as an entertainment medium and the breakdown of the cable industry strangle hold on distribution. Networks are throwing cash at sports as the only broadcast product unphased by timeshifting.

Weakness of players union? Can't be any more weak than NFL's. Who lets the comish decide punishment and then lets the comish decide the appeal on the punishment?

NBA comish has even more say on punishments (since judges don't turn over his season long suspensions even less so 4 game ones) but you are right that the NFLPA is the weakest. NFL player salaries are a joke compared to even hockey salaries given how short NFL players' careers are and how so little of their money is guaranteed.

Ersan seems to be putting up 15ish pretty consistently. Is that all we'll need from him? Where is the scoring coming from? KCP, AJ and Morris, Ersan and Dre in that order?

Lord help us if KCP is the highest scorer. Dre will score more than KCP. Jackson will be the primary scoring guard (and on the team as a whole).

Dre 13.8 to 12.7 for KCP.


Looking at the roster or even starting 5, I don't see where the scoring is going to come from. I guess we have to hope AJ can score. He did do a little better at the end of the year. Personally, I'm hoping Jennings can come back.

Take a look at a couple of those. According to 538, everyone in the NBA has peaked. Like two guys in the whole league they expect to have slight, very slight, improvements. 538 is terrible for basketball stuff. All they do is throw baseball stats at it while everyone else is taking advantage of truly advanced basketball stats that take into account the positional tracking system every NBA arena has now.

After coaching the first two seasons of the Drive, Otis Smith will move up to be director of player development and assistant coach for the Detroit Pistons, Pistons Head Coach and President of Basketball Operations Stan Van Gundy announced today.

The move coincides with other promotions in Detroit, including Pat Garrity to assistant general manager, Andrew Loomis to chief of staff and Bob Beyer to associate head coach. Quentin Richardson is leaving the Detroit organization for personal reasons. Brendan Malone will transition from bench coach to special assignment scout.

The only way the Palace gets demolished is if the concert business gets sold off. That business has been growing, and there aren't many people who could buy it who wouldn't want/need the Palace. Look at KeyArena as an example.

Smaller scale, of course, but Van Andel Arena in GR is breaking all sorts of box office (and profit) records with Kanye, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Kiss, etc. I think Garth Brooks played six or seven sold out shows over a 3-4 day span earlier this year.

They also have the Griffins, but my guess is they'd still be profitable without them. The Palace should still be profitable being in the northern suburbs, at least as long as racism exists.

With Ish Smith on the court this season, the starters flourished under his leadership. Andre Drummond has a usage rate of 25.4 percent, Tobias Harris has a usage of 22 percent, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope has a usage of 20.6 percent, and Marcus Morris has a usage of 18.4 percent.


With Reggie Jackson on the floor, his ball dominance completely changes the equilibrium. Drummond has a usage rate of 21.4 percent, Harris is at 18.4, Morris is at 16.4, and KCP is checking in at just 15 percent. There’s no balance in this attack, and Jackson is barely more efficient so far on offense than Smith has been, with a true shooting percentage of just 48.7 compared to Smith’s 45.9 percent.

That literally the same proportional balance just less of it. It's not a surprise that Reggie occupies the ball more than Ish.

Drummond made his comments Tuesday in downtown Detroit at an event to mark the unveiling of the franchise’s new logo.
