leg presses are for chumps.

Well lookie here, we got us an internet workout stud.

b-diddy
08-14-2011, 07:07 PM
why are leg presses for chumps? i do them occassionally at a moderate difficulty, thinking it might be good for my knees. i never feel like i get much out of the workouts, even years ago when i was trying to do them more intensely.

i know that there are more respected exercises for the lower body, but are they really worthless?

It does as much for your core strength as it does for your arms and chest, afaict. With Back surgery a few years back, it helps my back out a lot too.

I like the bars cuz you can get your chest below your hand level. Get a great chest workout.

Just lost 13 lbs. on my 9-day vacay.

Pretty much worked around the house/outside non-stop the whole time.

Feel like shit right now, especially my feet.

Drank 2 gallons of iced tea (and several Powerade Zeroes and Sugar Free Red Bulls) in the last 48 hours, and still ended up pretty dehydrated yesterday, teeth chattering and whatnot.

Not the best way to lose weight, that's for sure, but got tons of shit done and looking forward to my office chair and air conditioned office tomorrow.

iced tea dehydrates you, i believe. water is what you want.

i've tried the hindu pushups. cant believe how difficult they are. are they really that beneficial? im interested because i believe they strengthen your rotator cuff, which i dinged doing pullups (im brittle, apparently). also, im losing my gym so no more last of the mohicans. gonna get some dumbbells. that + pulls + sit ups, maybe a palates ball, maybe p90x, and as much outdoor running my knees can handle should be alright.

trying to figure out these hindu pushups. theyre difficult, but much easier now that i've figured out form / technique a bit. im 50/ 50 on them being some great exercise or being sort of a waste of time. anything that tires you out cant be too bad, but not sure its an optimal way of spending energy/time.

Good work Mxy.

Also, expect some soreness as you begin your path to better health. But hang in there, muscle soreness will go away.

A lil more adice...try to find some really bright colored cotton shorts that you'd wear on the golf course. Add to that ensemble a pair of black socks...the high ones and top it off with a nice pair of birkenstocks. Chicks dig dude that dress well when working out. Go with baggy shorts and extra tight wife beater.

its a strenuous workout, but quite different than moving weight at the gym. and you wouldnt do this at a gym, you look like a jack ass doing them. to me, its reminiscent of running in water or on sand. cant speak for results yet, but im officially intrigued.

These Hindu pushups are called American Dive Bombers. I do them sometimes, but, imo, aren't good for the back.

There are so many good pushups out there that don't have the risk these do, imo.

Try Spiderman Pushups, close or wide, offsets, etc.

not to nit-pick, but dive bombers and hindu pushups arent the same. the first half is, but returning to your spot, dive bombers mirrors the first half, while hindus sorta complete the circle. dive bomrbers double up the arm portion, hindu's strengthen and stretch the back and hips.

i dont doubt that there are better exercises to just build muscle. but these "royal court" exercises i believe have expanded goals.

anyway, im going to try them for a month hardcore once i lose my gym. i also have p90x waiting in the wings if im not getting results.

i ran in my runtones for the first time: http://www.reebok.com/US/search?t=runtone

their deal is they have these pods in the bottom that fill with air and release each stride. supposedly this adds to your work out. its a little bit like running on sand (not nearly as difficult).

cant really say after one run. i did an average jog and did feel like maybe my legs felt a little extra burn, but cant say for sure. its much more noticeable walking than running. however, they dont feel quite as stable as a normal shoe, which is a little worrisome for someone like me who has chronically bad knees. i'd say the biggest difference is in speed. i bet they added 30 seconds per mile, atleast.

very comfortable though. my feet are covered in blood blisters from my old shoes. those will be gone soon.

Back on topic...Been doing 2 a days and lovin it. Running, biking, elipticaling, treadmilling, etc, lifting and doing all sorts of quick twitch muscle excersizes. I'm ready for fuckin snow. It actuall rained, sprinkled, a lil bit last week so snow can't be far away. Can't wait for ski season.

CVS has a good deal on Pure Protein bars, you guys - a dozen bars for about $13.

Tahoe
10-04-2011, 06:01 PM
Absorption rate for a bar is slow compared to protein drinks. The only time I do protein is after a heavy lift and I was always told to do a drink cuz it'll hit the muscles quicker. "THEY' said it has to reach the muscles in 30 mins to be effective. Drinks do that. Bars, I'll assume, don't.

When do you eat protein bars? Just a good healthy snack? After a workout? Prior to?

DrRay11
10-04-2011, 08:11 PM
It's true, absorption rate is slower due to it being solid v. liquid and being heavily soy-based. Protein bars I have for dessert after my first meal at about 12:30/ so really just a good healthy snack that satisfies my sweet tooth and satiates my stomach.

Before/after a workout, it's always a whey shake. Not casein.

Casein is slow-digesting so when you're lifting you want whey. Casein is good to make some sort of meal before bed so the protein digests through the night. There's a casein recipe for pudding/ice cream type stuff I'm going to try soon here:
http://www.leangains.com/2010/09/high-protein-recipes-and-jack3d-review.html

under "protein pudding basics."

Pretty amped to try that out.

went out and walked three miles to get some casein today. Tried the "pudding" after I mixed it, not bad - looking forward to see what it's like when I take it out the freezer.

sounds sweet, never been skiing or boarding. Of course, something I'd like to try.

I'd buy the Optimum Nutrition Casein from Amazon - about the best price you'll find.

Just tried the pudding/ice cream - it's been in the freezer about an hour 15, and it's at a pudding-like texture, tastes exactly like pudding. With a little whipped cream (or heck, without), this shit would be the same as dessert but all protein instead of sugar. #win

DrRay11
10-06-2011, 08:53 PM

Squats bug my knees. I don't like exercises where most of the battle is to maintain form (which is supposedly how squats don't bug your knees). I rarely do free weights or straight running for much the same reason.

I have this overriding goal of not hurting myself. A co-worker who I only see rarely is a buff workout fiend. But every time I do see him, some random part of his body is always in a brace or a splint or something. That's not what I want.

deadlifted and did back/shoulder lift yesterday. Felt fucking great. First time in several months, pulled 285 pounds and decided that was a good enough ease back in.

Going for bench/chest today. yeeee

Hey, you guys. Haven't been able to lift for a month due to back pain; Anywho, I thought I'd share with you something I found on the internets today called "Glucomannan" powder, which is a zero-calorie, high-fiber thickening substitute and even comes in noodle form. http://www.amazon.com/Miracle-Noodle-Shirataki-7-Ounce-Packages/dp/B004CLCEDE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1328749096&sr=8-1

Zero-calorie stuff would appeal to those who have trouble keeping weight in check, I'd imagine.

Ran another 5k yesterday. My right shoe ripped along the outer side, and I spent the last 3-4k of the race curling my foot funny so I wouldn't accidentally fold and trip over the sole. Not my greatest race, but I still did it in under 30 minutes. A new pair of New Balance shoes is in my future.

I took these pork tenderloins and grilled them with just liquid smoke, salt and soy sauce. Lightly seasoned. I didn't overwhelm with any of those three things. Than I squeezed about 3 lemons in the bottom of a revere ware sauce pan and boiled it with garlic, salt and a little cranberry juice. Added some tabasco and finally some strawberry jam and a little ketchup. Sounds fucked up as fuck but it was fuckin good. Not just for a bachelor, the girl liked it too. That and margaritas with cole slaw. A no carb meal bitches, that was damn good.
