I'll be trying to find ways to add more of this to my life...

Problem is, I don't buy a ton of fresh stuff because I am only cooking for myself.

But it's got a vast amount of benefits, so I thought I'd share.

I'm having some raw cauliflower with some lowfat dill dip. I like raw celery, carrots and radishes better, but its tasting pretty damn good right now...with my Coors Light.

:D

carrots and some sort of low fat dill dip are one of my favorite snacks. Haven't picked some up in a while, though... I'll have to next time I go to the store.

Right now, I'm dieting to drop 13 pounds (was 177, and need to lose 13 pounds to technically be at a healthy weight).

It's pretty awful, because I allot about 4,000 calories on the weekend to drinking and snacks, so outside of that I have a 1,100 calorie cap per day.

But it's definitely working according to plan, almost to a t. Started 1.5 weeks ago, have lost a little over 3 pounds so far.

I'm dieting too. I'm trying to drop 3 pounds in 7 months. So far, so good. I'm drinking Coors Light to reduce calories. :)

DrRay11,

For as much as I ate and drank this weekend at the casino, I was surprised this morning to weigh in 2 lbs. less than going into it.

As a medical professional, do you think that's because I only got about 6 hours of sleep over the weekend (metabolism running more awake than asleep) or was it just magic?

Am I in the clear for my misdeeds, or is there some kind of evil lag effect? Will I discover that I've packed on a few tomorrow when I wake up?

DrRay11
01-31-2011, 11:21 AM
Probably dehydrated. Yes, you will likely discover you've packed on a few (probbaly just a little).

One thing I've noticed seems to help after drinking: you want to get rehydrated right away once you've had a "substantial" night, and get your electrolytes back. But the next few days after, stay away from salt. That will help you keep the weight off.

DrRay11
01-31-2011, 01:01 PM
Yep, sodium causes the body to retain more water, = more pounds.

Unless you were having some kind of serious water retention issue in the first place, a sudden dehydration drop is not weight you can or even want to keep off. Your body will get back to whatever normal, healthy hydration was and so will your weight.

Leaving home for a couple days always seems to take a couple pounds off. I think we don't hit the couch as much, stay as hydrated as we do when we are home and we don't snack like we do at home even if we eat carrots or something healthy.

But the best thing to do imo after a 2 or 3 day runner is to make sure you excersize and drink water. Sweat it out and replace fluids with water.

This. That's why I hardly have any food at my place besides, usually:

yogurt
carrots
pickles
cold meat
frozen chicken filets
lean cuisine (no preservatives)
milk
eggs
OJ
cereal
almonds
bread
90/10 lean ground beef
and an assortment of condiments (French's honey mustard FTW)

... that's literally all I can think of, unless there's an off chance I'm actually cooking something for me and someone else.

Nice. I've been doing two to three 2-a-days a week with lifting being the other exercise. I'd like to think it's working.

Tahoe
02-03-2011, 02:38 PM
I used to lift religiously and did the Back and arms on blah blah blah. I can't even remember right now. But then I switched to an overall workout in 2 days. I did that cuz of my work. When I'm building I'm wiped out and can't go tear down the muscle more. So I lowered the weight and just do cardio.

My problem is when I'm building, I can eat and drink whatever the hell I want. Then there might be a month break (doing little jobs while waiting for plans or something). I don't go back to the gym in that period and still eat and drink what I want and gain weight.

So I'm trying to figure all that shit out. I'll work it out. The other thing is that it is true that the older you get the harder it is to lose weight. Sucks.

Ran 5Ks the last couple years. Switched to swimming about a month and a half ago. 3 times a week. Having fun learning about all the intricacies of stroke technique. First couple times I was in the pool I almost drown from exhaustion. Compared to now, my technique was virtually trying to run upright through the water.

DrRay11
02-04-2011, 03:42 PM
Yeah, I swam for about a month this summer due to my ankle becoming a real nuisance. It was definitely tough . After one week, I was looking up youtube videos on technique. They helped, but I went back to running for whatever reason.

Would you say you're more fit from the swimming than from the 5ks?

Bike and stairmaster. And about to do some 12oz curls at my safety meeting.

Good choice on the cardio. It's nearly worthless to go for a lift and then go out drinking... inhibits muscle rebuilding, and lifting burns far less calories so you don't even have that benefit.

Nope, not in my case. I have to be careful or I gain weight. I think it's muscle at the end of the day, but it's not like the fat that's already there goes away to make room for it. I only use weight by high-protein low-carbs, and I can't do solid exercise while I do that. Part of my issue is that I don't really go for the high-rep low-resistance stuff geared for weight loss. My knees don't like it, and I don't have enough time in the day to do that. I want to be in and out in under 90 minutes.

Hey, DrRay, first time caller, long time listener here. So does freezing fruit, and more specifically bananas, affect their health and nutrient content at all? I can't imagine it does because of the whole conservation of mass and energy principles and all that but...

They definitely taste sweeter, does the sucrose/fructose whatever change somehow?

Tahoe
03-03-2011, 10:35 PM
WOTS is that when they thaw, they sweeten.

geerussell
03-03-2011, 10:45 PM
Freezing tends to arrest of lot of the breakdown of nutrients that occurs as fresh produce ages. For commercial stuff there's usually minimal time between picking and freezing so it's often better than the "fresh" stuff in the megamart which may be of indeterminate age.

DrRay11
03-04-2011, 08:15 AM
^to expand upon that, vegetables and fruits chosen for freezing are at their ripest point. Generally, eating frozen food within certain boundaries will provide more nutritional value than "fresh" stuff at the market that is probably a ways past its ripened peak.

It's recommended to steam or microwave vegetables instead of boiling them, as boiling allows B and C vitamins to leach out.

Frozen fruits will retain their nutritional value for a longer period of time if they are sweetened with sugar.

Longest time periods for nutritional value range from 8-12 months for fruits and 12-18 months for vegetables. In either case, it's recommended to get them fresh if they are ripe and in season. Otherwise, frozen is just as good of a bet, so long as you don't keep them forever.

um, it's gonna depend on what the 800mg is.

edit: lol, oh, beat me to it.

Yeah, the warnings say not to take that for over two weeks straight. You might be fucked. I don't really know...

after quick wiki research (using only reliably sourced sections and info), you may have the following side effects:

+ decrease in risk of Parkinson's

- increased cardiovascular risk for high doses (not sure what might be classified as high doses regularly, I imagine you might want to cool it a bit)
- increased risk of hearing loss

aside from any common side effects which you don't appear to be experiencing.

Started playing indoor soccer every Friday (for two weeks now).

The first week I thought I might have a new response to your question about whether I was as in-shape from swimming as I was from running. I had real trouble breathing the whole time, by the end I was hugging the bench feeling a bit dizzy and most of last week my thigh muscles were seriously sore.

I thought possibly it was due to a couple other factors however and it looks like it was. First, I had lost track of time before the game and had eaten poorly just prior and didn't have time to stretch before taking the field because I got their just as our team was up. Second, I forgot how dusty the air in an indoor soccer field is and left my water bottle in the truck in the parking lot in my rush to get to the field. Third, I hadn't really worried about my hydration level throughout that day and hadn't made sure I was taking in enough fluids beforehand for an hour of sprinting in a hot environment.

Yesterday, I made sure to pound fluids all day, didn't forget my water bottle for the game, got their early enough to do a full stretch routine and made sure I ate well the entire day. I was on the field longer than probably everyone but the goalie (switching back to D when I needed my breath) ended the game feeling great, and am pretty much just exercise sore today.

Its apparently thicker and seems like a more concentrated version of the bottle stuff. I think their goal is less fluid to provide the same energy, since you are supposed to take it 15 minutes before your workout. Since you haven't lost any hydration, you don't need to replenish fluid, just get your body using the right energy source (carbs).

I think that's what they are going for anyway.

Tahoe

The only things I drink is coffee in the morning, water (but not much) and beer.

I had a crazy day. Free donuts in the break room, so I binged, and that just whet my appetite so I had one and a half more... Probably about 900 cals. That's after a 450 cal breakfast.

Then, I go to McDonald's for lunch and ask for a Classic Grilled Chicken (just the sandwich, no mayo) and an order of nuggets. She ends up giving me the fries, too. Another 1000 calories. So we're at 2350.

I go to the rec and play some ball, and end up winning a ton... end up staying for 2:45, never taking a break. According to the calculator (I put in 2 hours and 30 mins to be safe), I burnt 1545 calories. So, that put me at a net of 800... I just came home and had almost two scoops of protein, so I'm probably right around 1000 calories for the day, which was my original intention. Just an extremely twisted way of going about it.

So I read that if you are consuming 2200-2400 cals a day and working out and burning all of those and more, that you can consume a butt load of cals on one day and it won't effect your weight.

It said something like, after a while your body basically can't convert the calories to usable something or others. And that your body can only store so much as fat in a day, so it basically just shits them out. shits out unusable energy or something.

True?

lately ive been running on the treadmill doing my "last of the mohicans" work out.

i have bad knees that get aggravated easily by running. and when i run on treadmills i have a tendency to just keep increasing the speed, which apparently only adds to the wear and tear of joints. so now, rather than increasing speed, i just increase the incline. i go at a decent speed, but have been doing inclines of 3-7%. it absolutely is kicking my ass. but if the calorie estimates are right, its by far the most efficient method of calorie burn i've ever done.

i can do eliptical work outs forever and 10 minutes after doing them it feels like i didnt work out at all- part of the attraction to them, since theyre zero impact.

when i do last of the mohicans i feel it. and after doing it two days in the row i had to do a "last of the mohicans lite" workout.

Uncle Mxy
04-20-2011, 12:33 PM
What are the calorie estimates? I can do 1200-1300 calories in 65 minutes with the elliptical. Even if I assume that they're off by 20%, that's still 1000 calories an hour.

b-diddy
04-20-2011, 12:45 PM
in that ballpark. it told me i burnt 500 in 24 min mon. i like to break it down to 6 min blocks, and i can usually stay in the 120-130 range for that time.

im actually shocked your able to get those numbers on the eliptical. im guessing it may have something to do with programming in your age/weight, because even if i do top difficulty on the eliptical im going to be under the 1000 calorie an hour pace.

my complaint with the eliptical is that you can adjust the resistance, but the speed is always just what your doing. so maybe your better at pushing yourself, but i can really push myself for a bit and get into the 18 cal a min range, but inevitably i settle into the 15-16 range. on the treadmill, you get to choose the speed you want and you have to keep up or get tossed.

all the machines tell you what you want to hear. theres incentive in being the one that tells you the best number. but i've done elipticals regularly (stretches of months never missing a day) for about 2 years, i can say that my last of the mohicans work out was more intense than i've ever done on an eliptical. it could be something of diminishing returns. you do a workout enough you eventually master it. i think thats what the p90x is all about.

I'm 6'5" and 230ish. I still have a hard time getting a good 18-20 calorie/minute burn with most ellipticals. The one I use almost exclusively these days is the Precor 100i AMT:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxGSBF8MdR4

I feel kinda wiped at the end of 65 minutes, but it's not like I feel joint pain for very long which was my problem with most things. I had been swimming, but I had an ear infection and cut that out for awhile and have been full-on elliptical. It seems more efficient.

Once you're in a good routine, do your best not to fall out of it. I've been out of a routine for about three weeks now (intermittently jogging and doing pushups in between there) due to relocation, and I've ran each of the past three days: 1, 2, and 3 miles respectively -- I've ramped up even though I'm on a treadmill, which I despise. these days are going to be tough -- trying to lose weight without exercise is a special type of challenge. Going to have to go back to 700-800 calorie days like I did a couple of summers ago. Luckily, I'm not trying to lose much. 5-8 pounds would do it, but I'm going to have to eat a ton of protein to try and maintain muscle.

After my back is straightened out, I'm going to start taking boxing classes and eat like a king.

But that may also have to do with the weights I've been adding to my mostly-cardio routine. I've been doing one muscle group/2 different machines per day -- 5 sets of 10 reps on each machine. Not going over 100-110 lbs. -- mostly going for low weight/high rep. It's kicking my ass in a weird way... still not totally accustomed to it, not sure if I have the right mix of weights/reps.

^yes, cool it. ask a real doctor.

srsly, injuries are no fun. I would know. I am chronically hurt.

Made a nice 6.3 mile run yesterday, then fucked it up with a 3 am burrito.

Where'd you get the burrito? I'm a bit of a connoisseur.

yep. You can get ripped through pullups, deadlifts, and squats.

Actually signed up for some personal training at the club. Hope I get this one hottie. But I am seriously going to put in some leg work before ski season. Looking forward to it.

^nice.

I ate a whole lot today. Bag of rice cakes, 6" sub, three chicken breasts, a pita with hummus, two chips ahoy cookies, and about six pretzel rods w/ a little peanut butter.

Still only about 1200 cals total, and I'm done eating today. Hopefully I'll be motivated enough for a run tomorrow.

any suggests? Besides drinking heavily, cuz I have that covered, Dawg.

loving doing pullups, but not sure if im cheating using the bar. i swing like a monkey on that bitch. and getting my chin to the bar sometimes involves something of a sex-like thrust. dont go down to 90 degrees, either.

what exactly constitutes a pull up?

b-diddy

turns out i can do 15 pullups my way, 3 the legitimate way. this is bs. also, i could only set my bar up in such a way that i have to do the hands close together form only.

the good news is i took my 'last of the mohicans' workout to a whole new level today.

yeah I've never been technically correct on pullups either, I don't think ... probably part of what fucked up my back.

Did an LA Boxing workout tonight, the beginner boxing class. Good news is that I'm in better shape and better looking than everyone. Bad news is my technique sucks. That can be fixed, at least.

pullups apparently are all about working your back and lats. i was using my arms too much. happy about this, even though its a bit of a setback. the lifting that i have been doing has been mostly chest, bi's, and tri's (not that i do a ton of it. 80% of my working out is running). so its nice to address an area that i've mostly ignored.

i want to reaffirm my endorsement of 'last of the mohicans' workout. its not a gimmick, its just running up an incline.

this article goes into some depth:

http://www.menshealth.com/run/run-uphill-to-burn-more-fat.php

another article postulated that every degree of incline you add increased energy expenditure (a good thing in an efficient workout) by 4%. so, if you ran up a 5 degree incline, your workout would be 120% efficient as running on a flat surface.

ive worked out damn near daily for 2 1/2 years. in the last 4 months i've been working the lotm's, and my gains arent at all comparable. from everything i've tried, running up an incline has been far and away led to the best results.

my strategy has been this: run for 40 minutes. i like to run in the 7:30 - 7:00 mile range. as soon as i can run 7:00 miles for 40 min at the incline, i go up 1/2 a degree and go back to 7:30 miles. another benefit to this workout is its easy to avoid the "plateau" without having to add min. several times a week, im increasing speed or incline. since treadmills typically go up to a 15 degree incline, i think its safe to assume i can do this a while before maxing out or having to go further/faster than i want.

i think this workout would work for all levels of running. i go at a pretty good speed, but even if you had to walk/jog i think you could get a pretty awesome workout in in a short time.

the best part, for me, has been how my knees have handled it. my article mentioned it. i've chronically had knee problems since i left college, and i've been doing this daily with no problem at all.

so, just my 2 cents.

If you do 'em right, they seem like they can be ok. I was getting bored so I just cranked the machine up to max and was kinda surprised I could do it.
