Lions sign OT/OG Daniel Loper, he's like 6-6 320. Can play LG or LT for us, probably will have a chance to start at LG if we don't make any further moves.

It's just a one year deal as well, I was hoping we could get him for a few. We'll see how he works out, though.

Hey, our special teams have sucked the last few years.
Because we've been starting all of our good special teams players and playing guys that shouldn't even be in the NFL on special teams.

Lenon would be fine for depth and special teams. Remember, he was our special teams captain the last few years and he's actually fairly highly regarded as a special teamer. Its when you try to make him a starter or give him a lot of time on D in key situations that you run into trouble.

No, No, No. Fuck Paris Lenon.

How sad is it when the leading tackler on your team shouldn't be any better than 3rd string on any other team?
Apparently we should draft 7 LB's this year?

Why did we draft Jordon Dizon last year?

So I guess the Leo's signed some special teams LB named Cody Spencer yesterday.

Like we don't have enough LB's that can't play the position on defense (Alex Lewis, Anthony Cannon, Jordon Dizon).

Glenn

The Lions are a very "special team".

Wilfredo Ledezma

We should've hung on to Buster Davis. He's penciled in to start next year in Indianapolis.

Zekyl
03-10-2009, 01:57 PM
Remember the one thing they didn't like on Buster Davis? He didn't have the speed they wanted. Now, we're more concerned about strength than speed. He would have been solid for us.

We cut him because we had Dizon...................

One thing to remember about the Lions signing special teamers...another team's special teamers are this team's starters.

Lions had LB Angelo Crowell (Bills) in for a visit today. The Bucs, Rams, and Eagles have also shown interest. If he is fully healed from injury, Crowell could be a serious bargain for the price he's likely to go for. Hopefully Mayhew can make the right choice if he's healthy.

Wilfredo Ledezma
03-12-2009, 11:33 AM
Yes, Crowell would be a nice addition to play the outside opposite Sims. He was a beast in Buffalo.

The fact that he tore his ACL last year probably suggests you wont have to pay him top dollar. Low risk/High reward.

Glenn

This offseason has gotten sour pretty quickly.

To think we had legitimate shots at Derrick Dockery & Jay Cutler, only to have luck go against us both times is depressing.

I'd rather that information not have gotten out to the public so I don't have to think of what it would be like to have both of those guys.

Not to mention the Ken Lucas turning us down and letting Bryant McFadden, Mike Peterson and Nate Washington leave Detroit w/o a contract offer, only to see them sign elsewhere.

Alot of missed opportunities the past couple weeks. Some weren't Mayhews fault (Buffalo blew the Dockery trade), but still...

DrRay11

I'm happy so far. No overpaying just above average players like Millen would in hopes of building a team with an actual foundation, not a card house.

ProFootballTalk.com, who has more hits than misses when it comes to rumors, is speculating that the Detroit Lions could be working on a trade that would send defensive tackle Cory Redding to the Seattle Seahawks. The possible compensation in the deal isn't known.

An e-mail and a phone message to Redding's agent, Kennard McGuire, have not been returned yet.

What could give this rumor some merit is the fact the Lions, who made some sweeping changes in the roster because certain players didn't fit the system, have kept defensive tackle Chuck Darby on board. While some believe Darby, a former player for Rod Marinelli, is a "Tampa Two guy,'' Darby did start for three years in Seattle before joining the Lions last season.

The Lions have said they need to do a better job of stopping the run and they might be thinking of pairing Darby, 33, and recently acquired tackle Grady Jackson, 36, on running downs. Darby, who is a shade under 300 pounds, can get bigger. The Lions could then turn over the tackle spot to other players, including Ikaika Alama-Francis and Andre Fluellen, on passing downs.
Alama-Francis? A DT? What? Wasn't he a pass-rushing DE that can't crack the rotation? If he moves inside, what makes people think he'll have the power to stack up at the DT spot?

Tahoe
03-14-2009, 11:25 AM
I don't know. Interesting though. But you can have a smaller DT on passing downs.

Zekyl
03-14-2009, 11:34 AM
I guess he's 6'5" 280lbs. I thought he was smaller than.

DrRay11

I read something about trading Redding causes a 7.332 cap hit this year, but would release us obviously from the rest of his deal after this year....

Julian Peterson is 30, 6-3 240 pounds. Some say trading for him would signify us not taking Curry, but having two huge holes at LB, I'm not sure that is the case. Either way, it is only a rumor at this point, and there was another rumor that said Detroit had a "significant trade" in the works and that the deal could be done by Monday but did not name a trade partner.

Needless to say, if Redding is gone, there is a much better chance of us taking Peria Jerry at 20 (not that I support that decision).

Tahoe
03-14-2009, 12:03 PM
The rumored player from Seattle is Julian Peterson. I'd take him ove Redding. Redding is owed a workout bonus on Monday so if this happens, it'll happen this weekend.

Pete has a big contract, but Reddings isn't smalll.

do it? don't do it?

DO IT

A pro bowl LB would be sweet

Kstat
03-14-2009, 12:32 PM
we're also getting a draft pick too. This deal can't get any better.

DrRay11
03-14-2009, 12:35 PM
Doesn't Peterson have a big deal too? And yes, the rumor is now Redding for Peterson and a pick, though the pick is not ascertained. I'm still on the fence with this move if it leads us to taking Peria Jerry at 20. If not, I like it depending on Peterson's salary.

Anyone have any information on that?

Kstat
03-14-2009, 12:36 PM
exchanging redding for a player that actually produces makes it a steal by default.

Tahoe
03-14-2009, 12:39 PM
Petersons contract is larger than Reddings but we NEED to spend more money next year. His cap hit to us will be larger than the actual payout. I know that makes no sense but does the CBA half of the time?

Glenn
03-14-2009, 12:50 PM
Apparently Peterson was likely to be cut by the Seahawks in any case according to Killer.

NOT ROTOWORLD

Tahoe
03-14-2009, 12:57 PM
Yep, Once he wouldn't take a pay cut. Hopefully it won't be a rerun of the Dockery situation. Get him before he's cut.

Kstat
03-14-2009, 12:59 PM
this trade is done.

Seattle's 5th rounder and peterson for cory redding.

Mayhew is impressing me. His trades have been very clever.

Tahoe
03-14-2009, 01:01 PM
^ Per Roto?

This is a good trade. We take a cap hit with Peterson, which will help.

Now IS Curry still in their plans?

Kstat
03-14-2009, 01:02 PM
per fox sports.

Kstat
03-14-2009, 01:04 PM
And Curry is either more or less likely now, depending on who you walk to.

Schwartz's philosophy seems to be to take cheap space-eaters up front and using the money on skilled playmaking linebackers to build the defense around.

In that respect. Curry is now MORE likely, since he'd effectively shore up the LB position.

Tahoe
03-14-2009, 01:09 PM
I don't know...is Curry an inside guy? There will still be LBs there at 20 and prolly a good couple at 33, that could play inside.

DrRay11
03-14-2009, 01:11 PM
Curry can play inside or out.

Tahoe

Yeah, I'm liking the deal less as I hear more...

Kstat
03-14-2009, 01:20 PM
well, even so I'd much much rather have peterson than redding. It just makes the deal less of a smash hit.

Tahoe
03-14-2009, 01:21 PM
543 ^ why?

I still like it...a lot.

DrRay11
03-14-2009, 01:24 PM
Yeah, I guess you guys are right. I just want to know the amount and length left on Peterson's deal, he can still play at a lot higher level than Redding probably. I also don't like the hole we just created on the d-line, but I'll have to wait and see how that is resolved before I pass judgment.

Kstat
03-14-2009, 01:25 PM
let me break this to you... the hole at D-line is no smaller than it was 10 minutes ago. We're just paying a lot less for it.

We can bring in vonnie holliday in tomorrow on the cheap and fill the tiny amount of production redding gave us.

Tahoe
03-14-2009, 01:26 PM
Remember we need to spend money...or better put, we need to take cap hits. This deal we take a cap hit without actually spending the dough.

If K is right that Schwartz just wants big bodies up front and more skilled play-making LBs. We can find one of those.

DrRay11
03-14-2009, 01:28 PM

Right, which is why I'm saying if we address it cheaply with a stopgap guy like Holliday and not the 20 pick this year, I will be happy. Many more talented DT's available next year.

DrRay11
03-14-2009, 01:32 PM
Fuck it, I'm on board with this. I would have rather had us getting the pick back (obviously). But, if Redding was any good he would have have inhibited getting rammed up the middle so much. He's 28, underperforming and has a lot left on his contract. We get a pro bowl LB that is 30 but still has some left in the tank. Good deal.

Cory was roughly 4.5 next year and about a million a year raise every year. But then add a lil less than 2 mil a year for bonuses.

Zekyl
03-14-2009, 01:52 PM
It's not as big of a hole as some seem to think. Remember, we signed Grady Jackson and everyone assumed that Chuck Darby was out. He's a bigger guy (right under 300) that has the room to put on some weight and be a run-stopper like he was with the Seahawks before he came here and slimmed down some to fit the Tampa-2 speed craze. He's not perfect, but he's a stop gap. Plus, I read that Alama-Francis could be used as a pass-rushing DT. He's not working out at DE, so its worth a shot. He's 6'5" 280 lbs, so he's not undersized for pass rushing. He's just not going to be able to do it on rushing downs (I assume). Grab someone like Moala in the 3rd if he's there and let him develop in the D-line rotation.

Now that we have Peterson, we're either taking Curry and using him as a MLB or we can grab Maualuga if he drops to 20 or Laurinaitis at 33. Both moves I would be okay with. We've got a vet LB now that can sort of tutor a young MLB and Sims. I feel like that vet former all-pro presence is going to be great for these young guys.

Tahoe
03-14-2009, 01:54 PM
The cupboard seemed bare, but get some good players to lead and then we'll see what Darby, etc can do. I agree Zek.

DrRay11
03-14-2009, 01:58 PM
The no. 1 is still as up in the air as it was, I think. It was becoming more and more clear that Curry, if drafted, would be played at MLB because of his talents and the positional value. Sims, Curry, and Peterson would be sick. This is purely speculative, but we could also be looking at shopping Sims, whose skillset is more suited to the Tampa 2.

Curry, Stafford, or J. Smith -- some are saying B.J. Raji becomes a possibility but I can't see it at all.

Kstat

Right, I don't think he is either, I was just mentioning the possibility. Due to the year he had last year, it's unlikely we'd get anything close to equal value, so I agree he is probably staying.

Schwartzy was saying on Rome that the Lions have completely remodeled their weight room, locker room, etc. Players will know this is a new and different situation.

I don't think remodeling a weight room is going to win you a super bowl but that on top of the other changes, it helps.

Lions Paying Close Attention To The Jason Peters Saga?

The Detroit Lions are reportedly very interested to see what happens with the ongoing contract negotiations with Buffalo Bills “Pro Bowl” left tacke Jason Peters. It is interesting to hear this, because the Bills and Lions were trying to work out a deal for former Bill Derrick Dockery but the paperwork was not filed on time. Peters, who has been nominated to the Pro Bowl the past two seasons is wanting a new contract with the Bills and would like to be paid like a top 5 offensive tackle and the Lions are very interested in rebuilding there offensive line so we will keep a close eye on this story if anything develops.

I think our offense scored points last year. It was our D that let us down a lot of times. Not saying we shouldn't improve it. He'll be fine for this year (hopefully) and if he's good enough, he could become a backup here at the right price.

I don't want to downplay the CPep Linehan connection though. I'd really like to see what they can do again...and it looks like I'll get that chance this year. Leftwich would be great to have on the roster. I'm glad they are really going to put some time in on evaluating Stanton. If he isn't going to be a starter, let him go next offseason.

How many times did Byron throw 23 INT's in a year?

Byron has one year where he failed to throw more TDs than INT's (as a backup in Atlanta where he had 1 TD and 2 INT).

DC has played 10 seasons (not counting the first one without a pass attempt). In 4 of those seasons he had more TD's than INTs.

I'd rather have Byron than DC, but it's too late for that now I think.

It's decided then. We will give the 1st and 20th and 33rd for Cutler.

WTFchris
03-18-2009, 04:32 PM
Byron is the best FA QB out there. I agree. The issue is you don't sign him until after the draft anyway because then you have to cut him or DC probably if you draft one.

If you don't draft one I would attempt to sign him. However, he'll want to compete for a starting role, something they probably can't promise him here.

We also don't know what money he wants either.

Tahoe
03-18-2009, 04:35 PM
Theres always Joey Harrington or Jeff Garcia.

And I never said sign him today. I said what Mayhew said about wanting to sign another Vet QB.

At that late stage, I don't think Byron will be bitching about starting. I think he'd just like a roster spot.

WTFchris
03-18-2009, 04:38 PM
If he's there, we still need a QB and the money is right then get er done.

I just don't think we'll have that roster spot (we'll draft a QB somewhere unless they really think Stanton will develop).

I think our offense scored points last year. It was our D that let us down a lot of times. Not saying we shouldn't improve it. He'll be fine for this year (hopefully) and if he's good enough, he could become a backup here at the right price.

Mayhew said they want to sign another VET QB and really evaluate Stanton to. Leftwich?

Was this meant to be green text? Detroit averaged fewer than 17 per game last season, good for 27th in the league. While it's true that their defense was far worse, worst in the league at over 32 ppg allowed, there were only 3 teams with good enough defense to consistenly win games when the offense is only scoring 17. They need to be at least scoring 3 TD's per game to be winning games.

But yes, you're right, the defense is the far bigger problem. While the offense only MUST include by 4-5 points, the defense needs to improve by double digits. In fact, if the defense would have improved by 4 points, they STILL would have only been ranked 31st (and would have made them 1-13-2 instead of 0-16).

Tahoe
03-18-2009, 10:25 PM
No, I did'nt mean to green text that.

I remember us sucking on O, but not nearly as bad as D.

Maybe if our D could have given the O a few more possessions, or more time, it would have been different...slightly different.

btw...good info. I'm assuming the word after MUST was improve, not include?

Yes, I meant improve.

And you're absolutely right. The piont you make is clearly why defense wins championships. Actually, being great on one side of the ball helps you on both. If your offense is controlling the clock, the defense has less time to suck it up too bad. If your defense is forcing turnovers or getting the other team to go 3-and-out, your offense gets more possessions.

That's why the blueprint for a perrenial playoff team is a dominant defense, with a strong offensive line that can run the ball, and the ability to go over the top periodically for the big play.

DANA POINT, Calif. -- The talks are only preliminary and the real target has yet to be identified, but the Detroit Lions are already in the process of negotiating a contract with their first-round draft pick. Lions president Tom Lewand said the team could move very quickly in getting a deal done, adding that "By the rules, we could agree to terms with somebody tomorrow if we wanted to.''
Because the 2010 season is an uncapped year in terms of salary, the contract language for incoming rookies will be much different than it's been in the past. Lewand said it was important for him to get on the same page with the agents as soon as possible.

"We have to have robust dialogue with the agents of the players we're interested in. We've started that process and we've made it very clear to all of them that we have to have that as this month draws to a close,'' Lewand said.

"We won't put a timetable on it. From our standpoint, it's whenever everything that needs to come together, comes together. There's no timetable one way or the other. If we make the decision and (general manager) Martin (Mayhew) and (head coach) Jim (Schwartz) and everybody else is comfortable with it and we can come to a contract with the guy, there's no reason we can't do that tomorrow. If we can't - and any one of those pieces isn't in place - and it doesn't get done until the night before the draft, that's fine, too.

False-start Foster Re-signed

Lions re-sign George Foster, add center
by Tom Kowalski
Monday April 06, 2009, 11:25 AM
The Detroit Lions, who have already re-signed offensive linemen Stephen Peterman and Damion Cook from last year's squad, added another former player today when they re-signed tackle George Foster.

Foster, who was acquired in the trade that sent Dre Bly to the Denver Broncos in 2007, has started 12 games for the Lions over the past two years, including three last season.

The Lions also announced the signing of free agent center Dylan Gandy, a former fourth-round pick by the Colts in 2005. Gandy, who has also spent time with the Broncos and Raiders, did not appear in a game last season. Both Foster and Gandy signed one-year contracts.

If the Lions are contemplating moving a tackle to guard, what about the idea of moving Foster to LG? Obviously, unless we take Smith or someone falls to us at 20, we'll have Backus and Cherilus at the tackle spots. Unless we feel like Foster is beating out Backus, why not give him a shot at the starting LG spot? This is a bit of a shock. From the Mothership (http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/2009/04/13/kansas_city_signs_unrestricted_free_agent_lb_zach_ thomas/):

The Chiefs also waived WR Will Franklin on Monday. Franklin played in 13 games (one start) with the Chiefs in 2008.
Franklin was the Chiefs' fourth round draft pick just last season.
In "Don" Pioli style, this tidbit was buried at the bottom of the official announcement of the Chiefs signing of Zach Thomas.
New head coach Todd Haley has worked with wide receivers for a large part of his career so he apparently knew Franklin wasn't part of the Chiefs' future fairly quickly.
Haley excelled with much bigger receivers (Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin) than the 6'0", 209 pound Franklin.
Franklin had a productive career at the University of Missouri playing in a spread offense. He didn't show much of anything last year with the Chiefs due partly to injuries. Chris talked about our wide receivers just a couple of weeks ago (http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2009/1/27/737564/where-we-stand-the-kansas)and pretty much nailed it.

I'm on the fence about Will Franklin. I know the MU Tiger fans will jump on his "potential" but the guy looked completely lost last year. I think he'll fall into the mid-round draft selection abyss and we'll rarely hear about him.
"Completely lost" is the way I would put it too but he was only a rookie. Partly out of curiosity of Franklin's "potential", I would rather have rather seen the Chiefs give him another shot.
Because he has less than four years of accrued service in the league, Franklin will enter waiver system meaning each team in the NFL (in draft order) will get a crack at signing him.

Lions Sign Free Agents WR Ronald Curry and FB Terrelle Smith
April 16, 2009
ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The Detroit Lions announced today that they have signed free agents WR Ronald Curry and FB Terrelle Smith to one-year deals. Additional contract terms were not disclosed.

Curry (6-2, 210) comes to Detroit after spending the past seven seasons in Oakland. His best season came in 2006 when he played in all 16 games (three starts) and led the Raiders with career highs in receptions (62) and yards (727).

Last season, Curry played in 13 games (10 starts) and had 19 receptions for 181 yards and two touchdowns. He was originally drafted by the Raiders in the seventh round (235th overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft. Through seven seasons, Curry played in 76 games for Oakland, recording 193 receptions for 2,347 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Smith (6-0, 246) joins the Lions after spending the past two seasons with Arizona. During his career, the tenth-year veteran fullback has played in 138 games (85 starts) with New Orleans (2000-03), Cleveland (2004-06) and Arizona (2007-08).

Overall, he has carried the ball 58 times for 185 yards and registered 67 receptions for 354 yards and three touchdowns. Smith has also blocked for a 1,000-yard rusher six times in his nine years in the league, including Edgerrin James’ 1,222-yard campaign with Arizona in 2007. He was originally drafted by the Saints in the fourth round (96th overall) of the 2000 NFL Draft.

Killer on MLive

The Detroit Lions announced today that they have released three players, including quarterback Drew Henson.

Lions coach Jim Schwartz said the Lions would take a hard look at the quarterback position after the recent minicamp. In addition to first-round draft pick Matthew Stafford, the Lions have three quarterbacks on the roster (Daunte Culpepper and Drew Stanton).

Prior to the draft, the Lions said they wanted to bring in another veteran quarterback. It's unclear whether that's still the plan or if the team will bring in a younger player to be the fourth quarterback in training camp.

The Lions also released cornerback Pacino Horne (Central Michigan) and guard Matt Lentz (Michigan).

Zekyl

I wouldn't be surprised if the depth chart was:
1. Culpepper
2. Stafford
3. Stanton

I mean, if they can develop Stanton into a solid backup at this point, why not. You'll have to have a backup for Stafford once he takes over, and there's no reason to dump Stanton and try to find a new backup. As your current #3 QB, give him a season with Schwartz and see if they like his game enough to keep him around. If our #3 gets any playing time during the regular season, we've got serious issues. We don't need to dump him for a vet (I know that's not what you were saying, just saying that there's no reason he shouldn't be in the plans for another year at least so the new coaching staff can evaluate him)

Lions will try Levy at ILB. Schwartz "We'll see how it goes"

Schwartz on Follett

"He's played everywhere. At that point (in the seventh round), we drafted a good football player who was productive and at that point was on the board too long,'' Schwartz said. "He's extremely productive. I guess the best words you'd describe him are: good football player. He's versatile, he's played inside, he's played outside and he even lines up as a pass rusher with his hand in the dirt.''

Sammie Lee to DT...which we all expected, but he's happy cuz he says stopping the run is his strength.

Good interview.

Draft talent, fill need in trades and FA or waivers. Its true too. Bring in talent with the young guys.

Did you hear him at the end where he said he is NOT opposed to brining in Vets? I'm good with that as long as the players he drafts stay on the team. That gives a good mix of young and old.

Just listened to it all. Good interview. I found the Jason Hanson part very interesting at the end. Schwartz said he's unlike other kickers. He's out there running the same conditioning drills as everyone else and keeping up with the WR's. he said the guys respect him because he's not a hired gun like most kickers are. He puts himself through the same rigors as the rest of the team.

Louis Delmas is the most impressive player during Lions' first day of rookie minicamp
by Tom Kowalski | Opinion
Friday May 01, 2009, 4:50 PM
The Detroit Lions are holding a three-day minicamp for rookies and free agents. Here are some impressions of the first day of camp at the Allen Park practice facility:

3:10 p.m. -- The stretching period. This activity is taken a lot more seriously under new head coach Jim Schwartz than it was under any other Detroit head coach in recent memory. Under former head coach Rod Marinelli, who was normally a stickler for details, the stretching period was pretty loose with about half of the guys paying attention to the athletic trainers who were calling out the different stretches. Marinelli said he liked to use that time before practice for the coaches to chat it up with their players, giving encouragement, last-minute tips and advice, etc.

With Schwartz, the majority of the coaching staff stands off to the side and lets the trainers and strength and conditioning coaches run the stretch drill.

I don't see any problem with either approach. After all, these are professional players - they know how to get themselves ready for a practice. Some guys take stretching very seriously, others don't. The guys who want to stretch are going to be focused and pay attention, the guys who don't are just going to go through the motions anyway.

3:13 - Derrick Williams, the receiver from Penn State and third-round pick, is wearing No. 13. As of now, there are no numbers in the 80's available - the No. 88 isn't retired but since Charlie Sanders went into the Hall of Fame a few years ago, it's no longer distributed.

For the record - and for now - Matthew Stafford is wearing No. 9, Brandon Pettigrew is sporting No. 84, Louis Delmas has No. 26, DeAndre Levy has No. 54, Sammie Lee Hill is No. 79, Aaron Brown has No. 41, Zach Follett is wearing No. 55 and Dan Gronkowski has No. 47.

Also, it's Levy as in former Lions offensive coordinator Dave Levy, not like former Bills head coach Marv Levy.

3:20 - While the offense is going through some basic team plays, the defense has broken into individual drills. ... Sammie Lee Hill isn't THAT big. ... We're three minutes into the drill and Hill is already huffing and puffing ... My guess is that the training staff will have a discussion with him later today. ... Louis Delmas is thin, he's not small - big difference. ... He's very quick, too.

3:25 - The offense has broken into individual drills, too. .. The quarterbacks - the other guy is Justin Goltz, a tryout guy - are doing some scrambling drills. ... Watching the receivers and linebackers, it's obvious these guys haven't done much real football work in months because they're rusty and still getting their legs under them. ... A lot of technique instruction is going on at all the positions, not just in hand and foot placement, but how the coaches want the drill run.

3:36 - All right, the quarterbacks are now throwing routes to the receivers - but against air. ... It's about as thrilling as you would expect it to be. They're all short routes so nothing to get too excited about yet. ... OK, I'll give Stafford this - he gets it there in a hurry. ... Gronkowski looks as big as Pettigrew, but Pettigrew is smoother. ... Now they're throwing a couple of curl routes and you can see Stafford start to hum it a little. ... Levy and Follett, just from size and appearance, look like Jordon Dizon. They'll have to separate themselves when the pads come on. ... Throwing 10-yard out routes and Stafford is showing another good trait - he's not waiting on the receiver. He's letting it fly on time and it's arriving just after the receivers make their break. ... The receivers are dropping a lot of passes but that's not because of the velocity of the throw, it's because they're rusty.

3:50 - Water break. ... Apparently offensive line coach George Yarno doesn't believe in long water breaks. ... One-on-one passing drill ... Levy covering a back out of the backfield and he did a decent job. He's got some speed and quickness. ... Tryout cornerback Bradley Pruitt just made a sweet break and nearly intercepted a pass on an out route. ... Gronkowski against Delmas - a five-yard quick route, Delmas was all over him but Gronkowski held on ... Derrick Williams caught a nice pass on a deep crossing route, very smooth and showed some wheels after the catch. ... Stafford just missed an open Eric Fowler downfield and, while I don't know whose fault it is, Stafford's not happy.. ... Then a pass to Pettigrew was read perfectly by Delmas who stepped in front for the pick - but dropped it. He's not happy either. ... Gronkowski's a pretty good route-runner.

4:00 p.m. - Team drills ... It's going to take awhile for Delmas, when he steps up into the box, to get used to the speed at this level. That's true for all rookies making that jump. ... Stafford just threw a tight play-action, rollout route to Pettigrew. ... Another play action route to Pettigrew, who was well covered and tripped as the ball arrived, but Pettigrew still hung on. ... When he's playing deep and coming up on support, Delmas doesn't tip-toe into the action, he's on a full sprint. And it looks like he knows where he's going and knows how to get there. It's going to be interesting to see these guys in pads. ... Tryout running back Antone Smith is small (5-8, 191), but, man, is he quick. I wonder if he has any return ability. ... This Goltz kid - the tryout quarterback - doesn't look all that bad. He's not making the team, but for a rookie out of Occidental, he's doing a pretty good job.

4:10 - Four-on-five pass-rushing drills and seven-on-seven. ... Another great read by Delmas (coming up from a deep zone position) and another dropped interception. This one wasn't easy, but he still should've had it. ... Sammie Lee Hill is not impressing, but all those big guys are pretty gassed at this point. ... There goes Delmas again - jumping another route. Either this kid has great instincts or he sneaked into the offensive meeting this morning. ... Williams made a nice grab of a low-thrown ball (by Stafford) over the middle. ... OK, suggestion No. 1 - when Stafford's throwing the ball, look for it quickly. Tryout receiver Sean Bailey just took one off the facemask on a skinny post. The ball hit his mask and flew about 20 yards backward. ... The knock on Stafford was his ability on "touch'' throws, but he just dropped a nice 20-yard out route to Williams - perfect timing and touch getting it over the "under'' corner.

4:25 - This it, end of practice.

He was an early 2nd round pick of the Chargers in 02, but the Lions are his 7th team and since the Chargers hasn't made it more than a year with any other team.

Meanwhile, Hicks was great in 2000 with 14 sacks. Unfortunately he hasn't had a sack since 2005.

From an article on Yahoo about how, essentially, the Lions are wrong and have learned nothing...

Lest you doubt that such an analogy is appropriate, consider the recent experience of Lions season-ticket holder Todd Taylor, one of the seemingly lucky people who went home with a free Lions jersey handed out at a team-sponsored draft party last month.

The No. 34 jersey had a certain prediction-happy halfback’s name on the back, but according to the Detroit News, Taylor felt the stitching looked kind of bulky. So he and his friend, Jim Allen, decided to cut off the name – and, underneath, they discovered the name “Jones.”

That’s right, loyal customers: After releasing halfback Kevin Jones(notes) (who previously wore No. 34) following the ’07 season, the Lions apparently recycled his jerseys by layering them with one of the few names more common among American citizens.

Really, Lions? You gave them free gifts that were recycled jerseys? If they said "hey, we have these Kevin Jones jerseys that we put Smith's name over and you can't really tell. Do you want it for free?", I'd take it. But to just hope people don't find out is stupid and shows exactly how the team is run.

He'll probably see time all over the O-Line.

Is Loper officially a tackle or guard? We still don't have a left guard, unless Loper is that guy, but most depth charts I've seen have him listed as a tackle.

Loper played guard and tackle for the Titans over the last few years. According to a few sources, he's got the potential to be a starter but they had fantastic depth on the line so he couldn't crack the starting rotation. We'll see, maybe Schwartz knew what he was doing in recommending the guy. He made a comment after the signing about how if Loper was highly regarded by the Titans fantastic O-Line coach, he must be doing something right.

I say we give everyone a shot at those 2 spots on the left side of the line and may the best man win. Even if that means Backus slides to guard and someone else wins that LT spot, you just have to have your best players on the field.
