Microsoft doesn't have to do anything, least of all "bend over". There's really no "number 3' competing with Google or Bing, so any decision to not deal with Google benefits Microsoft pretty naturally. Fox has basically said "we want to give money to Microsoft maybe" and Microsoft is all on board that concept. :)

You may note that Microsoft is part of MSNBC, and MSNBC articles continue to appear on news.google.com.

Other way around. Microsoft would be paying Fox to delist from google. :)

You may note that Microsoft is part of MSNBC, and MSNBC articles continue to appear on news.google.com.

That's because the whole "google is stealing our news" dustup is mostly a newscorp/AP thing, not microsoft.

This is correct. M$ is trying to buy it's way in to a market dominated by someone else.

Remember, Fox doesn't have a lot of leverage at all. If someone else besides Google competed with Microsoft on search, that'd be different. The payoff is about turning "we want to give money to Microsoft maybe" into "we will give Microsoft money definitely"... not really a "bend over" situation, at least not any worse than the "Bing Cash Back" program.

geerussell
12-04-2009, 06:37 AM
Indeed, if Fox had any leverage they'd just opt out. As has been pointed out it's trivial to do... but nobody wants to be left out in the cold watching their traffic shrivel up.

One of the strategies google is talking about (http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2009/12/placating-publishers-by-limiting-links-a-google-five-click-faq/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+wired/index+(Wired:+Index+3+(Top+Stories+2))) using is already in play at the Financial Times which Mxy linked to a couple posts back. You get x number of free clicks per time period and then you pay after that. FT gives you 2 articles per 30 days. The article goes on to talk about the issues involved in some detail, along with some good related links at the bottom.

Anybody watch Obama at the republican retreat? Very interesting debates. There were some good questions by the repubs, but they were getting schooled so bad by obama that Fox News decided to stop showing his responses and just talk over the feed.

If you don't believe me, watch the last few minutes of Countdown from Friday (the video is up there).

Finally got a chance to watch "Huckabee" tonight. Funniest shit I've ever seen.

All of the applause is canned, cutting off abruptly instead of dying off gradually. Also, cut away shots of the "audience" is 100% fake, since you hear absolutely NO reactions to anything either Huckabee or his guest say during the interview.

You know, just dead silent... like NOBODY IS THERE.

Horrible television.

After all the debt ceiling theatrics that dominated the summer — and the collective sigh of relief at their conclusion (even though the final deal was not a real solution!), it was easiest to forget the federal government was still running on stopgap measures and not an actual budget. Better to forget that than to immediately and wearily wind ourselves up for another heartbreaking round of championing salvific spending cuts only to eventually make painful political concessions that would ultimately shove all meaningful work onto a nebulous future Super Committee.

Update: One last thing — the CNN poll doesn’t even offer Americans the option of blaming Senate Democrats. That’s a little misleading, don’t you think?

If the federal government shuts down, do you think that Barack Obama or the Republicans in
Congress would be more responsible for that?

But we can work with this.

So let's speculate that the same question gets asked with a "Senate Democrats" option, too.

It's obvious to most (but not you or your friends) that Obama and the Senate Dems would split responses, leaving the Republicans with an even larger lead in this poll. Would probably be something like ...

Obama 20%
Senate Democrats 17% (the 37% total between those two)
Republicans 46%

And what do you thing your blogs would have said THEN? The exact opposite to what you are saying now, of course. (Good for you, you're catching on!)

See, you need to learn to think for yourself and not just take what these radical blogs say as "the gospel". Whoops! Poor word choice there, sorry! LOL!!

Glenn

Fox News stuck by their reporting.

"We gave our viewers the news as it happened. When Justice Roberts said, and we read, that the mandate was not valid under the Commerce clause, we reported it. Bill Hemmer even added, be patient as we work through this. Then when we heard and read, that the mandate could be upheld under the government’s power to tax, we reported that as well—all within two minutes.

By contrast, one other cable network was unable to get their Supreme Court reporter to the camera, and said as much. Another said it was a big setback for the President. Fox reported the facts, as they came in."

No that shouldn't be laughed at... arrogance and ignorance of the highest calbire right there

Fuck I love politics though... LOVE IT!

On the one hand you have the sheep convincing themselves that "my vote counts" yet deep down we all know significant change isn't gonna happen because one dude won/lost an election

On the other hand you have the "leaders" of countries saying all the right things when they win/lose yet deep down they know the shit just hit the fan and they were locked in that room!

And somewhere off to the side, out of mind and not even a fucking topic for discussion are the powers that be... comfortable and safe in the knowledge that regardless of the result ain't nothing gonna change

I do love it... particularly the part where milliosn of people convince themselves that "my vote counts". They all COUNT! Your vote counts the same as everyone else's vote... and while it's great you managed to drag your dumb ass down to the polling booth and you somehow managed to fill out the card/paper/whatever in such a way that you didn't fuck it up (no voting for Sheed, Disney, Lebron) at the end of the day The Rock says "It Doesn't Matter Who You Voted For"

At about the same time, the vote count in Michigan was equally close. I just had a discussion with someone who thought Obama won Michigan only 50-49 because those were the last numbers he saw. I'm glad no one sat around waiting for Detroit votes to come in before calling it for Obama. :)

Colorado and Nevada could've been called at the same time as Ohio, if not sooner, making Ohio moot. The media is so used to Ohio and Florida being these big battlegrounds that they missed out on the real story -- that hispanics in Colorado/Nevada put Obama over the top on election night. As far as the election coverage goes...IT WAS FUQIN HORRIBLE. I like that Megyn Kelly chick or WHNI, but amateurish is a great way to put it. It took her 5 mins to walk. And one time she said, oh just a second, and said I have to do this...and brushed something off Joe Trippi's coat or something. She really thought she was something.

The theory originated on the idea that Congress, as direct representatives of their constituents, is elected by popular majority but the Executive (President/Vice President) was less a direct representative of the people and more the head of the collection of states and so would be chosen by the people's representatives (Congress). Before the two party system developed in the U.S., the number of presidential candidates and the regionality of the country (regions of the country somewhat isolated by geography and lack of technology) meant that no one got enough electoral college votes to be president, so Congress made the final decision. This was by design, as the electoral college was seen as a mechanism for winnowing down the candidates to just those acceptable to the people for the Congress to choose from.

The reason it was installed (and I'm sure there are more than one) is because of James Madison's primary fear. Madison was the chief architect of our system of three branches of government that hold each other in check. Madison's primary fear was that if you designed a system that was fully, or just primarily, controlled by a simple majority than the nation would be controlled by mob rule, like the Roman senate was, or oligarchical power (rich people) like the Greek Athenian democracy battled against its entire existence. So they designed a system where representatives chosen by the people determined the two heads of the executive branch, in the hopes that this would both prevent a dictator stirring up public sentiment enough to simply take control (this would be checked by the people's representatives making the final decision) and a powerful wealthy class growing up to incorporate all governmental power within their group (this would be checked by the majority vote of the people being the device that chose the representatives). Thus our system of "representative democracy".

It's dramatically less effective in the current two party system.

Fool and I posted at nearly the same time. :) Besides what Fool said, check out:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electoral_College_%28United_States%29

Basically, the popular vote was a non-starter due to slavery in the southern U.S. The south had a lot of people, but most were slaves. So, deals were made so they would be part of the United States, without unbalancing things. There's other reasons, like Fool said, but slavery was a big boogeyman.

In 2004, O’Reilly settled out of court in a case that accused him of “repeatedly engaging in offensive sex talk with [Andrea Mackris, a producer on his show], of having unwanted phone sex with her while using a vibrator on himself, and of describing his fantasies about having sex with her in a shower.”
