Jethro34 01-12-2008, 09:32 AM So the Scott Shafer hire. First, I wanted to check out Stanford's defense from last season. Pac 10 rankings 8th in scoring defense 10th in pass defense 9th in rushing defense 9th in total defense I got discouraged. Then I looked at what he had to work with (defensive players from recruiting classes). No defensive players higher than a 2 star from the 2004 class. Five 3 stars and two 4 stars in 2005 - 5 of those 7 were defensive line. Three 3 stars and two 4 stars in 2006 - 3 of those 5 were defensive line. Two 3 stars and one 4 star in 2007 - 2 of those 3 were defensive line. So given the 4 recruiting classes (I didn't check for 5th year seniors) he had to work with, he should have had an amazing line but hardly any talent behind it. At that point I wasn't so worried about the stats they gave up. In fact, it's amazing that in his first year there he didn't allow 55 points and 650 yards per game, given that talent. Put him here in a situation where he has as many 3+ star recruits in one season as he did in that 4 year period, surrounded by outstanding position coaches, and we'll see what he's really capable of. Zip Goshboots 01-12-2008, 09:51 AM I KNOW you just didn't question Rod. Even if you answered the question, I just know you didn't question him. Jethro34 01-12-2008, 10:13 AM I'll kiss his ring. I just hope he doesn't send me on a fishing trip with Fredo. |
