Decision for Michigan-Michigan State game time, TV to come by Oct. 29

FREE PRESS STAFF REPORTS

The only thing that Michigan and Michigan State know about their intrastate rivalry game on Nov. 3 is kickoff will be either at noon or 3:30 p.m.

The network to show the game remains a mystery.

ABC/ESPN will make a decision on whether ABC will show the U-M/MSU game at 3:30 that day, or the Wisconsin/Ohio State or Purdue/Penn State game.

Which ever game ABC selects, the other two will have noon starts.

Those games will be on either ESPN, ESPN2 or the Big Ten Network.

This Saturday, Michigan hosts Minnesota on ESPN Classic at 3:30. Michigan State goes to Iowa for a noon kickoff on ESPN2. Ohio State, No. 1 in the BCS standings, visits Penn State at 8 p.m. on ABC. Wisconsin hosts Indiana and Purdue hosts Northwestern at noon on the Big Ten Network.

Here's a look at the Big Ten schedule for Nov. 3:
Ball State at Indiana, noon, Big Ten Network

Iowa at Northwestern, noon, ESPN, ESPN2 or Big Ten Network

Michigan at Michigan State, noon or 3:30 p.m., TBD

Wisconsin at Ohio State, noon or 3:30 p.m., TBD

Purdue at Penn State, noon or 3:30 p.m., TBD

Illinois at Minnesota, 8 p.m., Big Ten Network

Uh-oh, BTN could get U-M vs. MSU

Television assignments for Nov. 3 games are postponed a week; networks offer no clues.

Dave Dye / The Detroit News

EAST LANSING -- Michigan and Michigan State fans will have to wait a few more days to learn the starting time and television network for the Nov. 3 game at Spartan Stadium.

The game will begin at noon or 3:30 p.m., depending on the network, which will be ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 or the Big Ten Network.
It's that last option -- the BTN -- that has some fans in an uproar because the network isn't carried by many cable outlets, including Comcast.

"It's not in our hands," said John Lewandowski, MSU's associate athletic director for media relations. "It's up to the TV networks."
The game times and networks are typically announced almost two weeks in advance, but ABC decided Monday to exercise an option in its contract and delay its pick.

Once ABC picks its game for the 3:30 slot -- it has narrowed its choices to Michigan-Michigan State, Ohio State-Wisconsin and Purdue-Penn State -- the other networks will fall into place, all with noon starts.
"There are a lot of options," said Mark Rudner, the Big Ten's associate commissioner for television administration. "ABC has the right to select one of three games based on the results of this week's games.
"It could go either way depending on what happens. It's their call. They're trying to capture the best game for the Big Ten race."
The deadline for ABC's decision is Monday, but "they usually let us know by late Saturday or Sunday," Rudner said.
"At this point, we just want to wait to make sure we pick the best game available," said Mike Humes, a spokesperson for ABC/ESPN.
If ABC selects the Ohio State-Wisconsin game, Michigan-Michigan State becomes the likely No. 2 choice.

The question is: Who picks No. 2? Is it ESPN or the Big Ten Network?
There have been rumblings that the BTN will have the second choice for the Nov. 3 games, but the conference and the networks won't say.
The contract called for the Big Ten Network to get the second choice (after ABC, before ESPN and ESPN2) for three weeks this season, and to get the third choice (after ABC and ESPN, before ESPN2) three times. The rest of the time the BTN gets the fourth pick.

The Big Ten and the networks have maintained from the start that they won't disclose who gets those second and third picks on a weekly basis.
"I'm not getting into the selection process," Rudner said.
Putting the Michigan-Michigan State game on the Big Ten Network would create quite a controversy in this state, where Comcast is such a dominant cable company.

Comcast has purchased advertising to defend its position in the debate with the Big Ten Network while criticizing the quality of games on the BTN.
A Michigan-Michigan State game seemingly would help disprove that theory, but there's another school of thought that the conference doesn't want the public controversy over its network's inability to reach an agreement with Comcast to get any worse.

The highly-publicized dispute between the Big Ten Network and Comcast has been raging since the middle of the summer after it became clear the two sides were so far apart in negotiations.

The BTN is adamant about being carried on the cable's basic package (no extra fee to subscribers) while Comcast wants to carry the network on a special sports package with an extra fee.

There's no end in sight to the dispute, especially with basketball season around the corner. The BTN will be carrying even more basketball than football games, including about half of the conference games involving both Michigan and Michigan State.

When did the DetNews update their look? I like it much better.

The BTN blames Comcast and vice versa. It's all a money grab anyways. I did have to watch some games elsewhere to see Michigan play on the BTN.

By the way, the BTN has to have the worst and most boring halftime show ever.

You notice how Mickey York from FSN was on there for the Northwestern game, haha.

Well, if it does air on the B10 Network, the sports bars will be thrilled.

It seems like they are waiting to announce this to make sure that there isn't enough time to get dish service before the game. Probably just a coincidence.

Comcast wil ante up, if it works out like most other deals. ESPN worked that game well, actually twice with ESPN2, iirc, The Golf Channel, etc.

Luckily DTV has it already.

I really like the reruns of other B10 games. I love the B10, so watching Illinois vs Iowa or something late at night on a rerun is pretty cool. Or watching UofM reruns aint bad either.

Now, it's "Hey, let's start a cable network with no cable company to broadcast it!"

It is the cable network fault. Comcast is doing this to get a bigger piece of the SEC channel. When the SEC channel comes out it will be on extended basic. Just like all the other sport programs that Comcast owns.

FREE PRESS STAFF REPORTS

Everyone with a television will be able to watch the intrastate rivalry as Michigan visits Michigan State next Saturday. The game will be on ABC (Channel 7 in Detroit) at 3:30 p.m.
The Big Ten Network will show No. 1 Ohio State visiting Wisconsin.

Everybody who? Everybody? Great Britain? Michigan? USA? Space Shuttle?

Since Big Ten is not part of ESPN Gameplan any longer they have this interesting deal where the Big Ten region will get the game on ABC. If the game is not on ABC in your region it will be on ESPN/ESPN2. So everyone will get to see the UM vs MSU game no matter where you are in the US.

Zip Goshboots
10-29-2007, 11:33 AM
Well, I guess this is the "OGT" for UM-MSU.

This coulda, woulda, shoulda been some kind of week. UM flops in their first two games, and MSU flops in four out of their last five. Though UM "coulda, woulda, maybe shoulda" only have had the Oregon drubbing to blemish their record, it is certainly feasible that Sparty "coulda woulda shoulda" beat Norhtworstern and Iowa, and possibly the Badgers (but that was a tall order).
UM is coming into this game with a whole lot of momentum. Henne, since Oregon, and when healthy, has looked solid. UM's receivers are making big play after big play. They now appear to be genuinely three deep at running back, so that kind of mitigates the question of Hart's health a bit. Defensively, UM is gaining confidence by the minute, as they really held the Goophers in check (not hard, I know, but HEY!) They have playmakers in many positions, and the tackling is about as crisp as I have seen since, dare I say, 1997.
MSU is full of questions right now. On one hand, they still should be feeling pretty good about themselves, as they are literally a few plays from having two more wins, and really did give a legitimate shot to Wisconsin and OSU. But the "moral victories" really seem to take a toll on a team through a long season instead of having the reverse effect. The coaching staff seems to put Ringer on the shelf at times, which seems to disrupt the offensive rhytm. Receivers are still young, and don;t yet have a chemistry with Hoyer. I don;t see the strength in Hoyer's arm, and IMO alot of his soft throws to the sidelines are ripe for picking. Sparty does have a pretty good screen pass scheme, but UM should be able to sniff that out whenever Ringer is moving right or left instead of toward the line of scrimmage.

Not feeling an MSU uprising here. They've had a couple of emotional games back to back, while UM, though pushed by the Goophers, knew they would prevail pretty easily once they stopped tripping over themselves offensively.

And hell, Michigan seems to have found a field goal kicker! There's joy in Ann Arbor!

I like UM 48-17.

Timone
10-29-2007, 12:18 PM
Watching Henne be able to get into a rhythm throwing the ball vs. Illinois was cool, when he was in anyway. That being said let's go, um, 27-13 Hugh Jackmans.

Michigan's offense, especially with Zolton Mesko deciding that 30 yard punts are the way to land an NFL job: Two hand offs to Hart, and a shitty pass by weak armed Henne. MSU knows it's coming.

The Illinois game was great, and Henne played well and was tough. But the fact is he doesn't lead a team like a four year starter should, telegraphs too much, and hasn't been as good as he was as a freshman. That's coaching, not Henne. UM (Quarterback U) has pretty much wasted Henne's talent.

I sense an upset. UM, as usual, is playing incredibly uninspiring football. They couldn't capitalize on MSU playing like complete dung in the first half, couldn;t move the ball enough.
A good team would have been up 21 or 24-3 at least.

Of course, OSU was up 24-0 on these guys, but gave up two lightning quick defensive scores to let tham back in. MSU's offense was not allowed to do what it just did to Michigan.

I am NOT looking forward to this years UM-OSU game.
