It's fairly easy to do a culture test for Escherichia Coli to see if water is contaminated, but it's not easy to tell if the contamination is due to human means or if it is the result of a natural bloom of bacteria in a body of water.

Scientists have thought long and hard about what chemicals occur in human sewage that isn't naturally occurring in large quantities. They've finally decided on it:

Caffeine.

They were going to test for Prozac, but the test would be more expensive and take more time, and outside of large metropolitan areas, almost no one takes Prozac.

Kansas team scores 72 in first quarter; wins 86-0
Associated Press

Updated: October 31, 2007, 11:19 AM ET

SMITH CENTER, Kan. -- Smith Center scored 72 points in the first quarter of a high school football game Tuesday night on the way to an 86-0 win over Plainville, according to a report in the Salina, Kan., Journal.

Smith Center forced six turnovers in the first quarter as it racked up what is believed to be a record for points in a quarter by a high school team, the paper reported. The previous record was 66 by Prescott, Ariz., in 1925.

The defending state champion has outscored its opponents 640-0 so far this season, including a 69-0 win over Plainville earlier this year.

It's because Vernor's is the only ginger ale that actually has ginger in it anymore. The rest of them don't even taste like ginger, which is mystifying to me. What makes Vernor's great is the combination of the carbonation and the spicy bite of the ginger.

P.S. You can add Vernor's to your homemade Chinese food and it's awesome. Pour in about a quarter of a bottle to a full wok of stir-fry and let it reduce, if you don't want to keep fresh garlic around. Plus it adds a sweet flavor, like a homemade ginger-hoisin sauce. Goes great on veggies and chicken.

R.I. police say man had .491 blood alcohol level

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — State Police arrested a man early Tuesday whose blood alcohol level allegedly was .491 — more than six times the legal limit — which they believe is the highest ever recorded in Rhode Island for someone who wasn't dead.

Stanley Kobierowski, 34, of North Providence, was arrested after he drove into a highway message board on Interstate 95 in Providence, Maj. Steven O'Donnell said.

After police arrived, Kobierowski had trouble getting out of the car, then grabbed it and refused to move, forcing troopers to carry him to the breakdown lane before taking him back to their barracks, O'Donnell said.

A Breathalyzer test showed Kobierowski had blood alcohol readings of .489 followed by .491, O'Donnell said, the highest readings anyone at the State Police or the Department of Health could remember for someone who didn't end up dead.

The legal limit in Rhode Island is .08. A blood alcohol of .3 is classified as "stupor," .4 is "comatose" and .5 is considered fatal, according to the health department.

"Our only assumption could be that the person has a serious alcohol problem," O'Donnell said. "The person's lucky they survived. There's no doubt he would have gotten killed or killed someone if he had continued on the route he was taking."

Kobierowski was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where he was put in the detoxification unit and sedated, O'Donnell said. He was arraigned Tuesday afternoon on charges of driving while intoxicated and resisting arrest.

He was released after promising to appear at hearing Friday in district court.

Kobierowski did not have an attorney at his arraignment, police said. A phone listing for him could not be found.

LAKE CITY, Ga. - More than 1,800 people showed up to help ABC's "Extreme Makeover" team demolish a family's decrepit home and replace it with a sparkling, four-bedroom mini-mansion in 2005.
Three years later, the reality TV show's most ambitious project at the time has become the latest victim of the foreclosure crisis.

After the Harper family used the two-story home as collateral for a $450,000 loan, it's set to go to auction on the steps of the Clayton County Courthouse Aug. 5. The couple did not return phone calls Monday, but told WSB-TV they received the loan for a construction business that failed.

The house was built in January 2005, after Atlanta-based Beazer Homes USA and ABC's "Extreme Makeover" demolished their old home and its faulty septic system. Within six days, construction crews and hoards of volunteers had completed work on the largest home that the television program had yet built.

The finished product was a four-bedroom house with decorative rock walls and a three-car garage that towered over ranch and split-level homes in their Clayton County neighborhood. The home's door opened into a lobby that featured four fireplaces, a solarium, a music room and a plush new office.

Materials and labor were donated for the home, which would have cost about $450,000 to build. Beazer Homes' employees and company partners also raised $250,000 in contributions for the family, including scholarships for the couple's three children and a home maintenance fund.

ABC said in a statement that it advises each family to consult a financial planner after they get their new home. "Ultimately, financial matters are personal, and we work to respect the privacy of the families," the network said.

Some of the volunteers who helped build the home were less than thrilled about the family's financial decisions.

"It's aggravating. It just makes you mad. You do that much work, and they just squander it," Lake City Mayor Willie Oswalt, who helped vault a massive beam into place in the Harper's living room, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Mysterious credit card charge may have hit millions of users

By Mitch Lipka
Globe Correspondent / January 11, 2009

Several Internet complaint boards are filled with comments from credit card customers from coast to coast who have noticed a mysterious charge for about 25 cents on their statements.

The charge shows up on statements as coming from "Adele Services" in Melville, N.Y. There is no business by that name listed in Melville, or registered to any business anywhere in New York, for that matter.

Two theories of what is going on have advanced on message boards and among consumer advocates: Someone is trying to find out whether an illegally obtained credit card number will work before making a bigger charge, or they're trying to rip off tiny amounts from tons of people.

The latter theory has more credibility at the moment. The Better Business Bureau in Louisville reports that, at least so far, those who have been hit with the small charge have yet to get slammed with a bigger charge. The bureau speculates that the number of possible victims could be in the millions.

It's not clear how the numbers got in the hands of the people making the charge, but consumer advocates say it is most likely through either a data theft or someone using a computer to generate numbers.

Former Massachusetts assistant attorney general Edgar Dworsky, who runs ConsumerWorld.org, said the scam reminded him of an old adage: "It's easier to steal $1 from a million people than $1 million from one person," he said.

Most people, Dworsky said, are likely to overlook or ignore the small charge. "Isn't that the perfect scam, when the victim doesn't even know something has been taken?" he said.

Take a look at your credit card statements, and if the charge is there, don't let it slide. It's what the thieves want you to do. Instead, file a dispute with your credit card company, and lodge complaints with the Federal Trade Commission (www.ftc.gov) and the Internet Crime Complaint Center (www.ic3.gov) - which is run by the FBI, the National White Collar Crime Center, and the Bureau of Justice Assistance. Federal law enforcement officials tend to react when the complaints reach a certain volume.

Quick story:

I was playing pickup basketball last night. This kid (17 or 18 years old) was fighting with everybody on the court. He probably got in four shouting matches before my game with four different people. Anyway, my game starts and he switches on to me. He's probably 6'3, 160 lbs and I'm 6'7, 200 lbs. So when he switches to me I take him down low because I can abuse a guy that weak down there. He starts shoving me and punching me but I just take it as part of the game and he can't move me. The more physical I get, the angrier he gets. Finally he gets so frustrated that he can't do anything against me that he comes up with a plan to stop me:

HE GRABS MY NUTS FROM BEHIND!

WTF? There were 20 something people that were waiting to play on the sidelines that saw this. I never get mad enough to take a swing or shove anyone (especially a punk kid) but as soon as he did that, he went flying into the wall. Of course, that hurt his pride even more and he gets up talking about how he's "going to pop me, murder me, I don't care how big you are." To make matters worse, he has the audacity to claim it's a racial thing and that "he's just playing good defense."

This is where I grew up: The mean streets of Rochester.

MoTown

True. I get frustrated when I play pickup usually because every player on each team thinks that they have the right to take equal amount of shots, regardless of actual talent.

Timone

I haven't played with other people in years. I'm modest enough to know what I'm great at (defending) and what I suck at (everything else), but that usually isn't the case for everyone else.

MoTown
02-03-2009, 08:41 AM
Nah - as long as you play hard the entire game, I could care less about how good of a player you are. Sometimes the best guys on the floor have very little basketball ability. They just hustle and get board and play good defense. The people I want to punch are the guys that have a lot of talent that think they should shoot the ball every time down the floor and get mad when the don't "get their shots."

Just rec'd this ... suppossed to be true.

edit...just thought that maybe weird news would be a better place.

It was a huge wedding with about 300 guests.

After the wedding, at the reception, the groom got up on stage
with a microphone to talk to the crowd.
He said he wanted to thank everyone for coming, many from
long distances, to support them
at their wedding.
;
He especially wanted to thank the bride's family
and his family and to thank his new father-in-law
for providing such a lavish reception.
As a token of his deep appreciation
he said he wanted to give everyone
a special gift just from him.
So taped to the bottom of
everyone's chair, including the wedding party was an envelope.
He said this was his gift to
everyone, and asked them to
open their envelope.

Inside each manila en vel ope was an 8x10 glossy
of his bride having sex with the best man.
The groom had gotten suspicious
of them weeks earlier and had
hired a private detective to tail
them.
After just standing there, just watching the guests' reactions
for a couple of minutes, he
turned to the best man and
said, 'F---you!' Then he turned
to his bride and said, 'F--- you!'
Then he turned to the
dumbfounded crowd and said,
'I'm outta here.'
He had the marriage annulled
first thing in the morning.
While most people would have canceled the wedding
immediately after finding out
about the affair, this
guy goes through with the
charade, as if nothing were wrong.
His revenge--making the bride's parents pay over $32,000 for a
300-guest wedding and reception, and best of all, trashing the
bride's and best man's reputations
in front of 300 friends and family members.
This guy has balls the size of
church bells.
