Poll: Lyon, Rodney, Polanco---who would you re-sign

Say we only decide to re-sign one.

    Who would you rather have...?

    Polanco

Pros- .300 hitter, clutch, defensive stud, veteran
Cons- may have to commit 3-4 yrs, old

    Lyon
Pros- cheapest of the 3, durable, proven, closing experience
Cons- would you want to pay him $5M+/yr to be a reliever?

    Rodney

Pros- closing exp, he got the job done at an insane success rate this yr
Cons- could command 4-5 yrs at $7-8M per, odds are he will blow more than 1 sv next yr

The way I see it, we won 86 games this year despite scoring fewer than 800 runs, that tells me it was due to pitching & defense. Re-signing Lyon would allow you to have some left over change to get another bench player or another bullpen arm.

    My pick: Brandon Lyon

    Here are some variables...

    * If Joel Zumaya is healthy next spring, losing Rodney won't hurt as bad

    * If we offer Polanco arb., and he signs elsewhere, then we net 2 extra 1st rd picks next June. Those picks can be used on 5-4 star prospects that you can use to build your minor league system, or use to compensate for guys you choose to trade this offseason or next offseason.

    * The Tigs got some solid play out of some pitchers in the minors this year...guys like Robbie Weinhardt, Cody Satterwhite, Casey Crosby are all destined to be big leaguers...

    * What if Scott Sizemore can hold his own? There's nothing to suggest he can or cannot, so it would be easier for him to give him the full-time job next April, rather than ease him into the roll and play once every 10 days when Polanco needs a breather.

Lyon with PP being a close 2nd.

Lyon did pretty well after a shaky start, iirc. When he eff'd up later in the season it was because he was left in that extra inning. He had some great outings this year.

    I'll take Polanco.

    What closers are available?

Somebody like a Huston Street would be nice.

But we'll probably end up with Octavio Dotel or something.

If there is someone younger than PP that can play SS or 2nd, I say sign him and have Santiago play 2nd or SS whichever the new guy doesn't play.

    Its an option.
