Grizz's Return on One-Year Deal Denied

Sorry, y'all. My hanging around just wasn't meant to be.

Jerry Stackhouse was recently given a list of teams interested in signing him as a free agent and was sad to see the Pistons were not among them. He wasn't surprised, however.

The Pistons are trying to get younger and more athletic, and Stackhouse, 34, realizes his career is coming to an end after he missed most of last season with a broken foot.

The Pistons also need big men. Stackhouse is a 6-foot-6 swingman, who mostly came off the bench for the Mavericks.

Stackhouse played for the Pistons from 1997-2002 and calls it the highlight of his NBA career. He wanted one last fling here and dreamed of retiring as a Piston after Memphis waived him. Dallas traded him there in a four-team, eight-player trade last week.

But it looks like the Pistons are not interested.

"Hey, I would have loved (going back to Detroit)," Stackhouse told The Detroit News on Tuesday from vacation in Virginia. "But I don't think they were interested. They are moving in a different direction. They wanted younger. You know I had a list of teams who were interested in me and I was hoping Detroit would be one of them, but they are more in position to want to bring in the young guys and let them play rather than contending."

Stackhouse played in 10 games last season because of the foot injury and averaged 4.2 points and 1.7 rebounds. It was the first time he failed to average double figures in his career. Stackhouse averaged 22.1 points in five seasons with the Pistons.

"I think I had very productive years in Detroit," he said.

"When you look at it what I did in Detroit was probably the highlight of my career. I had some of my best memories around there."

You are basing your existence here based on Stack's presence?

He can't help it; he patterned his game after him.

Good thing Stackhouse isn't coming back, 'cause you wouldn't want to be here if he got traded again. Right Grizz?

    Hey, Grizz.

No offense but I thought you already left.
    Rise like Lions after slumber,
    In unvanquishable number -
Shake your chains to earth like dew
Which in sleep had fallen on you -
Ye are many - they are few.
