Minnesota coach Dan Monson is resigning and assistant Jim Molinari will become the interim head coach, The Star Tribune of Minneapolis reported Thursday, citing a team source.
The newspaper reported Monson told his coaching staff of his intentions on Thursday morning. The university has called a 3 p.m. news conference, according to the report.
Neither Monson nor athletic director Joel Maturi responded to messages from The Associated Press. Other officials in the athletic department declined to comment, and declined to specify the purpose of the 3 p.m. news conference other than to say they believed Monson and Maturi would be there.
The Gophers dropped to 2-5 on Wednesday with a 90-68 loss to Clemson.
Monson was in his eighth season at Minnesota and had a 118-106 record, including 44-68 in the Big Ten. Under Monson, the team made the NIT four times and appeared in the 2005 NCAA Tournament.
