    Rock star's drug scars

    FORMER 1970s teen pop idol Leif Garrett yesterday pleaded not guilty to drug possession charges after he was arrested for allegedly trying to ride the subway without a ticket.

    Garrett was found with heroin after being arrested in Los Angeles for trying to ride a subway train without a ticket.

    Garrett, who had a string of hits, including a remake of the Beach Boys' song Surfin' USA has a history of drug and traffic charges and is on probation for other drug charges.

    The 44-year-old was arrested by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies on the platform of the Pershing Square Red Line station for allegedly not having a ticket to ride the train.

    An arresting officer said Garrett also was under the influence of drugs.

    Garrett was held without bail for allegedly violating terms of his probation for a previous drug offence.

    Last March, Garrett pleaded guilty to attempted possession of cocaine-based narcotics and was placed on probation.

    In December, a warrant was issued for his arrest.

    In 1999, Garrett was arrested in Los Angeles' MacArthur Park after trying to buy drugs from undercover police and, in 1979, crashed his Porsche while under the influence of drugs and alcohol, leaving his passenger paralysed.

    If convicted, Garrett probably would avoid jail under a law that sent some convicted drug users to treatment, authorities said.

    Garrett appeared in three dozen films, mostly in the 1970s and 1980s, and released 10 albums.

    An email seeking comment from a spokeswoman listed on Garrett's website was not immediately returned.
