I saw Buckwheat Zydeco this year in GR on Fat Tuesday, he puts on a great show.
    Find a new slant.

I've gone a few times -- probably once every other year or so on average -- and will try to make it again for a day. Part of me wishes I had the time (and Detroit had the perfect weather) to attend this and DEMF every year. One thing I'd recommend is to check out the kid's acts as well. Some of them are quite entertaining.

went to the Jazzfest last night and had lots of fun. FANTASTIC music. we listened to Rachelle Farrell in the beginning and her voice was unreal. her range was crazy and her on stage performance was real fun. we listened a little to a group called Serio Mendes Brasil 2006, but i didn't really care for it. fun music, but not really the jazz music i came for. the last group was an instrumental jaz group called Kirk Lightsey's Detroit Four. music was very nice. the crowd was thinning out, since it was towards the end, so we got to sit pretty close and listen. actually, the crowds weren't too heavy probably due to the weather, so we were always real close to the stage (4 stage with constant music, btw)

the food was really great. the ticket system sucks ($20 for 36 tickets). i ate a ton: fried catfish, chicken wings, a huge spicy sausage w/ peppers, ribs, and a funnel cake. there were tons of restaurants represented, too many to list.

there was a fireworks show on the river at around 10pm (30 min postponed probably due to weather). it was, well, a fireworks show. really long.....one of those "should have been about a third shorter" because people started to lose interest.

we parked at the Compuware building for $10 (can be validated at Hard Rock cafe or some other place, i forget). it was pretty cool, because it was literally around the corner from the Jazzfest.

the weather was cloudy and a bit cold, but definitely worth it. it's running until Monday, so if you have time, check it out. great food and great music.

Between a relative hospitalized in Alpena and the energetic disassembly of my car's bellypan, my Laborious Day weekend took me far away from Detroit and any chance of making this. <sigh>
