When the Max M. Fisher Music Center opened in 2003, Detroit Symphony Orchestra leaders promised that more ambitious artistic programming, including thematic festivals, would soon follow.
But while the DSO did expand its jazz, world music, spoken word and other populist offerings, classical programming remained stuck in neutral, and the vow to produce festivals evaporated like an unfulfilled New Year's resolution.
Nearly four years later, the DSO is making good on its pledge.
The orchestra will launch 8 Days in June, an ambitious festival June 21-28 featuring orchestral concerts, jazz, chamber music, solo piano, spoken word and panel discussions at Orchestra Hall and the smaller Music Box recital hall at the Max. Tied to the theme "Creation in Conflict," the festival's 11 events will explore music arising from troubled times, interpersonal conflict or periods of intense artistic ferment.
