    Scott Mitchell Appreciation Thread

#8 Worst Signing Ever according to SI

With Barry Sanders in the backfield and the receiving tandem of Herman Moore and Brett Perriman at his disposal, Mitchell should have been great. But the three-year backup to Dan Marino had only one standout season in his five with the Lions. The other four he was mediocre, and twice the Lions were bounced in the first round of the playoffs due in large part to his poor performances.

I don't think it was a bad signing. He had a couple good years. No, he never proved he could be a good starter but it was still a good signing.

If Cassel flames out in KC that was still a good trade. You just never know when you get a backup QB that's shown a few signs.

I think the Hakim/Schroeder signing was much worse. Both were career #2/3 WR's and Millen expected them to be #1's. When that failed he spent every first rounder trying to fix that.
Phil Wenneck: The man purse. You actually gonna wear that or are you just fuckin' with me?
Alan Garner: It's where I keep all my things. Get a lot of compliments on this. Plus it's not a purse, it's called a satchel. Indiana Jones wears one.

The defense of him was supposed to be included in the first post. Accidents will happen.

Mitchell was mediocre and the run and shit worked well on bad teams (good years against a bad schedule) and almost always failed against good teams (mediocre to bad years against a good schedule and all those playoff loses except for one).

The run and shit didn't work because the play development was too slow. Barry was so great at juking and making players miss, but he had to so often because they would be after him already in the backfield. How many of you remember the saying that Barry's two and three yard gains were often more incredible than his 20 and 40 yard gains?

The whole receivers find their route thing was moronic in the NFL. Think about the one playoff game they won. Fontes had Kramer throw quick short passes on determined routes and they ATE up Dallas' D. The run and shit called for a QB to stand in the pocket and look over the field and hit the receiver he could find mismatched or not covered. If he saw it quickly you could get a good gain, but if he needed time and didn't get it he was screwed. And Mitchell wilted under pressure.
