The transormatioin of Europe continues. Instead of the hostile govts, France, Germany and Italy have elected more conservative and US friendly Gov'ts.

So another Dem talking point down the drain.

Tahoe, I can't agree at all with your simply using a black and white prism of American politics to view the Italian election. Italy has voted on, what, 60 governments since WWII? And Berlusconi himself has been elected like 10 times already (EDIT: I'm slightly exaggerating here). He gets elected, has a cabinet that gets into tons of trouble, pisses off the Italian people just enough to remember why they didn't vote for him last time and then has to call new elections. He's always around becuase he's such a huge figure with his wealth, holdings and the fact that he's president of AC Milan. He'll always have a big base as well because of the big north versus south battle that goes on in Italy.

France is conservative but there are a lot of things even this French government is doing in growth of infrastructure that you'd find the incredibly liberal by comparison. Also France, like quite a few European countries have a conservative party that's very centrist in outlook and one that is very extreme.

In Germany there was no way Schroeder's party was going to get re-elected back into power after his government was seen as doing nothing to stop the huge recession Germany was feeling a few years ago.

I'd also add that being left or right does not necessarily determine a European government's feelings towards the US. Blair after all was from the left (though a much more center left by the time he got into power) and he was as gung-ho about Iraq and being Bush's buddy as anyone. To go back to France for a moment don't forget that when everyone hated France's opposition to the Iraq war and started munching on Freedom Fries a conservative and quite pro-active Chirac was in power and steamrolling a left prime minister.

Just wanted to add that I really don't like the French (except for the ones our age from southern France and Marselle; especially ones from Marseille, those whack jobs can really party). Every frenchman or french company I've worked with in business are complete morons too. Sometimes I think they'd have nothing now if it weren't from the war reparations years ago.

Had to add that. The thought that I'd be for the French was making me queasy.

The French truly believe they are the center of the universe and they really can't fathom why no one gives a shit about them anymore. They are what the Americans are going to be in 100 years.
