It was a while ago but Lou Dobbs and Hardball were the only shows that came close to doing anything, iirc.

I used to do Seti@home. That sucker would eat your processor big time. Of course that was sory of the point.
    Now imagine if you designed:

    1) an authentication scheme so you could permit/deny some kinds of compute jobs based on a variety of criteria (money, penis size, what you want to do)

    2) mechanisms to somewhat generic-ize the job so the computer doesn't need to know something as specific as "pattern analysis looking for ETs"

    3) a big but otherwise quite conventional private network for some aspects to facilitate some amount of real work without interruptions, as needed

and you've got the basics of the Grid and where it's going today. "Distributed computing, meet world. World, meet distributed computing." This isn't quite as easy as it sounds. It takes a bit of human and machine thinking for some computer program to efficiently use multiple CPUs on the same system, let alone when they're separated by distance. Then, instead of maybe a couple computers and CPUs, go for oodles and oodles of them working in coordination doing something relatively complex.

And as noted, all of this distributed computing is really a subset of ubiquitous computing -- not just big computers being omnipresent, but something taken as much for granted as driving, clicking through the TV, or breathing. That's where the real economics is going, AFAICT.

I'm in a talky mood today. Enough. Pistons come on soon.

So if they watch gay male porn too does it own?

Also oddly enough all the conservative ball licking that goes on that shitty excuse for a news channel could be mistaken for gay porn.

Either way you failed on ownage Tahoe and should be ashamed for pulling the "most idiots watch" card.

I was talking to my friend about music and she pulled something like that on me.

I'll stand up for Fox, sorta kinda. This seems more like a case of scientists running off their mouth than anything, and Fox biting on it. It might be a case of Fox unduly sensationalizing things, but I see enough unrepudiated hyperbolic claims by enough different scientists to suspect "academic chest thumping". Fox was duped.

There's much real research on high-speed networking for Joe User. But the Grid is no more or less relevant on that front than, say, WiMAX. On that note, the typical transport between Grid nodes, IP over terrestrial fibre, epitomizes big and boring, and that's not really what the Grid people are focusing on. They have a well-hung network to have sex with the God Particle/Higgs boson, not to do porn.

Sometimes Mxy just likes to know other people are watching him talk to himself.

    That's my impression anyway.

As long as I get to expose my shocking ignorance, I get an exhibitionist thrill.

Seriously, this kind of shit bugs me because researchers are supposed to know better. If an objective hard-science scientist is going to be a hype engine, they should be accurate to the best of their knowledge. To do otherwise is to fuck science in the ass.
