By the by, Thompson is overrated.

This is a tough one. Mark Twain was the greatest American writer. But HST lived his entire life turned up to 11. Mark Twain was smarter, a better writer, and funnier, but he wasn't an avowedly insane person with a penchant for liquor, guns, and psychedelics. HST might be cooler.
