Pistons keeping Chucky over Deron Washington

The move is a bit surprising considering the biggest knock on Washington's game -- shooting the ball -- was not a major issue in the preseason.

In fact, he shot 64.3 percent from the field (9-for-14) and was a perfect 3-for-3 on 3-pointers.

Now that he has been waived, Chucky Atkins remains the lone player on the roster without a guaranteed contract.

I wasn't at the practices, but my guess is kid isn't too smart and was having trouble picking stuff up.

I'm not so sure it's more when you consider the portion of the vet's deal that the league covers.

Didn't Ben Gordon make Afflalo expendable?

I think it was Chris Wilcox, actually.

No, but he took the old shooting guard's salary.

If Afflalo was out because of Gordon, then Washington would have never been considered.

Afflalo was moved because they needed a big.

But you know this.

Oh right because if your team doesn't need a 6-5 guard, then it doesn't need a 6-7 forward.

Washington would have been about the 7th small forward on the roster, behind Stuckey.

Are we collecting more SFs or SGs?

We don't want kids with futures. We want blind alleys and dead-ends.

We met our quota of "dudes who can't make FTs" when we signed Ben.

But.... we like old Chuckers who can't defend better.

He can't shoot, he has no real post game.
Just another athletic wing that can dunk, dime a dozen in the NBA.

Loved watching him play for VT though. ^_^

but we already have a wingman who can't even dribble the ball between his legs without losing control; rip hamilton.

liked the kid a lot and would've liked to see him develop more. but let's be real- he was athletic and that was about it. he can't handle to save his life and his shot was streaky at its best. sorry to see him go- i would've kept him around. but it's not like he's a huge loss or even any kind of loss really. we lose a kid i liked but not one who would've made any sort of impact IMO.

You could pluck another guy just like him from any number of places.

Dude might have been a "good kid", athletic and all that shit but at the end of the day his time was up and it was time to go

Lou Roe wasnt an athletic freak. He was actually a decent player that was cut down by injuries.

not the athlete washington is, but IMO he was a similar player. a good athlete with no real position, poor ball handling skills and poor jumpshot. he was a better collegiate player than washington for sure. but his skills did not translate to the nba very well at all.

so i don't think he would've stuck for long anyway. maybe as an end of the bench guy but even then...

by the time he got to the NBA he was a shell of the player he was at UMass. It's not fair at all to compare the two. It's like comparing Ed O'Bannon at UCLA to Ed O'Bannon in New Jersey.

Freaky athleticism, but in limited doses in Summer League and the preseason it just didn’t translate as hoped into great perimeter defense.
