It's a movie made by San Francisco bay-area stunt people who aren't really full-time professionals. Think b-movie earnest labor-of-love quality, with ugly sound and music (where professional post-production would've helped).
All that being said, there's a LOT of interesting-looking fast-paced fighting scene. This is too low-tech for big wire work or CG or anything like that -- just well-done action sequences. The plot at its best is an excuse to get from one fight scene to another, watching them beat each other up with some great moves. There's cheesy-funny bits in the movie. One character is very much like Fez from That 70s Show. The extras on the DVD, particularly the extended Tae Pho scene (where the bad sound is actually an asset in a 70s chopsocky way) are worthwhile. Here's a taste of the movie:
I watched WALL-E this weekend. It is a great movie. It's creative, fun and exciting. The entire first half of the movie had zero dialogue, which made the movie incredible. Instead of being lazy and using words to describe what was happening, they used the actions and non-verbal communication of anthropomorphic robots to convey the plot. I thought it was very well done, one of the best movies I've seen all year.
10/10.

Seen this past week: Australia & Synecdoche, New York
Got dragged to Australia...it was an excruciating 3 hours. Looked great...but obviously a painful painful chick flick.
Synecdoche is pretty crazy...a solid 8/10. Typical Kaufman screenplay, but his first as a director (you could tell). Also, anything with Seymour Hoffman is gonna be at least decent.
If you're looking for a well-done entertaining b-grade horror movie with schlock guts and real tits, you could do a lot worse than The Janitor. Bonus points for recording their commentary when they were drunk off their asses!
just got back from seeing Role Models.....very funny, good flick
I finally got around to seeing the live-action Death Note movie (the first part -- it was filmed as a two-part movie, with a logical cliffhanger in the middle).
It's pretty awesome -- definite thumbs-up! Two young geniuses duke it out over a magic book that lets its owner kill people just by writing their name in the book. There's some nicely fucked up twists and turns. Let's just say that if you like movies where the bad guy wins, you'll like this. That's not really a spolier, because it's not 100% clear who the bad guy really is, even at the end. If you've seen the anime, the same main voice actors do the live action movie voices most excellently.
The only drawback is that the DVD extras are fucked up. Only some extras are available at some times, and no way to "play all". Totally obnoxious!
I loved that show. My neighbor got me into it last year. We'd always have a few beers and watch it. Excellent stuff.
