Ed (Saginaw, MI): Hi Chad. Anything going on is Piston land? Seems pretty quite. Is Joey D just going to stand pat with the Pistons reeling?

SportsNation Chad Ford: (1:29 PM ET ) Sounds pretty quiet in Detroit. I think Joe D is content to have lots of cap room this summer and then make a few plays then. With the Thunder making a deal for Chandler, Detroit will have the most cap space of any team. They'll be in the drivers seat.

When the Detroit Pistons sheered nearly another $1 million in salary-cap space with the trade of Alex Acker to the Los Angeles Clippers this week, GM Joe Dumars further solidified his franchise as the favorite to sign Utah Jazz forward Carlos Boozer as a free agent this summer.

The Pistons expect to have nearly $23 million available to spend this summer on free agents. Boozer has said he will likely opt out of his contract with the Jazz this summer.

Most believed that Boozer was destined for the Miami Heat, but Heat president Pat Riley chose to take on Jermaine O’Neal’s $22 million contract for the 2009-10 season. The Jazz and Boozer have grown tired of each other, and league executives believe Utah is more inclined to re-sign power forward Paul Millsap to a long-term contract.

Boozer has played just 12 games this season with a knee injury. His inability to stay on the floor has clouded teams’ opinions about him, but Boozer makes sense as the replacement for pending Pistons free agent Rasheed Wallace.

the best part about that is they may get him at the same price as rasheed wallace.

Yeah, Boozer could probably be had for 10-12 mil. If we did that and did not add any other salary we could still sign Bosh. The best move would probably be to bring back Dyess for a year and then trade Amir for a backup wing scorer. or extend Amir cheap and move Max for the backup wing. With Boozer here we'd have to renounce Amir in order to sign Bosh, so may as well trade him (or max if Amir is extended for max's money).

Boozer is a mercenary. He's going to go wherever the $ is best, IMO.

So our chances are pretty good, if Joe really wants him.

If a Florida team could get close to Joe's best offer, Boozer would probably take that based on the FLA connection and the income tax benefits.

Isn't Memphis the only other team with enough money to throw at big FA's next year?

Well, if he can't get a top flight guy like Amare or Bosh, I say stand pat. We're not winning it all with minor tweaking anyway.

See if you can pick off some of the FA's next year for cheap.

It would be very stupid for the pistons to make a move right now. there are maybe 1-2 trades that would not be idiotic at this point and neither is very likely.

The season is already lost. Don't spend valuable resources trying to save something that's already dead.

If Dumars has a little patience today he can clean up this summer. There's no point in throwing that opportunity away unless Bosh or amare is on the table.

yep. if you want to see joe wheel and deal, wait for june and july. I can see him making 3 or 4 different moves.

the wizards will probably have to choose between keeping caron butler or their top-5 pick in this year's draft.

Either way, dumars wins.

Aren't the Wizards gonna try to hand us Haywood, Thomas or some other pieces before they give up something valuable like Butler or the #5 pick?

What makes Joe think he's gonna get Butler or the pick? The Wizards could offer Haywood (expiring) and a Lotto protected first.

If Joe doesn't take it that's his problem. The Wizards could make the Grizzlies or Thunder the same offer. I'm guessing one of those would accept, simply for the extra pick
