John Waters is an acquired taste that I've never really acquired. I watch most of his movies (perhaps with the exception of Serial Mom) and mentally go "uh, ok". I was in Baltimore awhile back and never acquired his love of the place, that's for damn sure.
Baltimore is great. It's got all the urban decay of the north plus all the bigotry of the south. Did I say great? I meant horrible.
That being said, John Waters is awesome and the original Hairspray is seriously one of the funniest movies in the world.
There's a world of difference between "old" John Waters (up to Polyester in 1981) and "new" John Waters (Hairspray and later). His "old" stuff is SERIOUSLY deranged and not for weak stomachs. His "new" stuff is a lot more tame, but still pretty funny.
Just saw The Zodiac on TMCHD. Pretty damn good and suspenseful, albeit without resolution (obviously considering the material). 8.5/10

I recently watched the new Hairspray and it was actually pretty good.
The most profound think I can say about it is that I'm going to spend the rest of my life trying to fuck Amanda Bynes. HOLY shit is she unbelievably awesomely hot. I'm sure that if she and I ever met in a bar, after a couple drinsk she;d have my face tatooed on her ass.
For thumbs-up "bad movie night" fare, rent The Brain from Planet Arous, a 1950s B&W sci-fi horror flick. A smack-talking evil brain creature takes over a nuclear physicist's mind and threatens... the world!
Great to see this thread is still going strong. Allow me to inject some more opinions:
Rush Hour 3
Extremely disappointing movie...until it got to the climactic action scene, which shouldn't have been the climax but I enjoyed it anyway. Chris Tucker should just be allowed to fight in movies...not talk. There was a great action sequence in that casino hotel, also. But everything else was half-baked, overblown garbage, and the movie ended on an interesting note, but one I would not have used.
The Simpsons Movie
I laughed out loud very hard on at least three separate occasions. It wasn't as though they reverted to the formula...more like they went back to what's actually funny. And allowing them to curse is always a nice touch. That movie single-handedly made The Simpsons culturally relevant again, God bless its soul.
Ratatouille
Good movie. Took too long to get around to the meat of the matter and farcical at its worst (remember, this is a movie about a rat who wants to become a French chef), but it had a couple relatively funny sequences, good voice work (Patton Oswalt gives the voice of Remy, the main rat, and he was good), and an ending that I thought very satisfying. Once again, Disney provides another animated character who, if she was real, you'd probably want to hit (Colette). This is becoming an alarming trend.
Ocean's 13
Could have completely bombed given the parameters they worked with but it was pretty fun. Pacino was solid, and the subplot with the hotel reviewer was great.
Superbad
Did not disappoint, and that's always a good thing when every fucking person on the street tells you it's amazing. It's not the best movie you've ever seen, but it's damn good. The best part of the movie was the dialogue, some of which captured the moment so perfectly it was hilarious. Emma Stone (Jules) was fucking hot, which helped my viewing experience. But yeah...Michael Cera was great, Jonah Hill was convincing, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse had some amazing lines and delivery that allowed his character to really blossom.
We Are Marshall
Ah, the good ol' Disney formula. But it's actually worth viewing because a) Matthew McConaughey (I had to look up his last name) was really good, and the movie's richly shot a la Remember the Titans. And you know, obviously, what's going to happen even if you'd never heard of the story. Interesting note: the girl who plays Annie is Kate Mara, the granddaughter of the late Giants owner Wellington Mara.
Intolerable Cruelty
God, was this movie funny. Go watch it. It's a chick flick, so grab the wife, but you won't be disappointed because you get to stare at Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Brick
Don't know if anyone's seen this (noir-style movie starring Joseph Gordon Leavitt) but it's slowly creeping into my all-time favorites list with every viewing. Enhancing the appeal that much more is the fact that Meagan Good (yes, THAT Meagan Good) is a supporting character and she plays her part well.
Semi-Pro
I have not seen this movie. No one has. But here's a link to the R-Rated NSFW trailer, and it's hilarious. I think a WTF field trip is in order.
