Volcano on Alaskan Island Erupts

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (July 13) - A volcano erupted Saturday with little warning on a remote island in Alaska, sending residents of a nearby ranch fleeing from falling ash and volcanic rock.

The Okmok Caldera, a massive crater seen here in an undated photo, blew an ash cloud at least 50,000 feet high when it erupted on Saturday in Alaska.
The Okmok Caldera erupted late Saturday morning, just hours after seismologists at the Alaska Volcano Center began detecting a series of small tremors.
The explosion flung an ash cloud at least 50,000 feet high, said geophysicist Steve McNutt.
Ten people, including three children, were at Fort Glenn, a private cattle ranch six miles south of the volcano on Umnak Island, located in the western Aleutians about 860 miles southwest of Anchorage.
They were later picked up by the fishing boat Tara Gaila, which responded to a Coast Guard request for emergency assistance. The Tara Gaila was taking them to Dutch Harbor, the Coast Guard said late Saturday night.
The ranch residents had managed to call military police on Kodiak Island on a satellite phone before losing their connection, according to the Coast Guard.
At the same time it issued the general request for assistance from boats in the area, the Coast Guard diverted the cutters Jarvis and Melon to head toward the scene from their patrols in the Bering Sea.
A rescue helicopter from the Melon responded but had to land in Dutch Harbor after flying through some volcanic ash, causing some damage to the aircraft, the Coast Guard said.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Lee Goldsmith said those at the ranch reported rock and ash falling around them.
Okmok is 60 miles west of the busy fishing port of Dutch Harbor on Unalaska Island. Ash was reported falling in the region, McNutt said.
Two planned flights from Unalaska were canceled in response to the eruption, said Jerry Lucas, a spokesman for PenAir, the primary airliner serving the area.
The 3,500-foot volcano last erupted in 1997, according to McNutt. The volcano has shown signs of increased activity during the last few months, he said.
Previous eruptions have typically produced lava flows, but the volcano center could not immediately determine if that had occurred in Saturday's explosion, McNutt said.

Volcano on Alaskan Island Erupts

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (July 14) - A volcano, which had previously thought to have erupted Saturday, has been found to be no more than famed internet poster Tahoe after a late night binge at the local burrito hut, Bean-O.
The Okmok Caldera eruption late Saturday morning preceded an ominous odor of digested jalepenos and maple syrup. Just hours after seismologists at the Alaska Volcano Center began detecting a series of small tremors, the CDC was contacted by concerned local law enforcement of a possible natural methane leak.
Tahoe, as he is called within various internet circles (most notably in the up-and-coming Detroit sports-based forum, WTFDetroit), was on vacation at the time. Local authorities suspect late-night munchies due to suspected marajuana shenanigans.
Just about turned my stomach there.Quote:

Undersea Volcano Erupts Off Tonga Coast
AAANUKU'ALOFA, Tonga (March 18) - An undersea volcano erupted off the coast of Tonga shooting clouds of smoke, steam and ash thousands of feet into the sky above the South Pacific ocean, officials said Wednesday.
Spectacular columns spewed out of the sea about 6 miles from the southwest coast off the main island of Tongatapu — an area where up to 36 undersea volcanoes are clustered, said Tonga's geological service head, and volcano expert Fool of WTFDetroit.
"It's a very significant eruption, on quite a large scale," he told The Associated Press.
There was no sign the offshore eruption posed any danger to residents, he said, with trade winds blowing gas and steam away from the island.
Residents said the steam and ash column first appeared on Monday morning, after a series of sharp earthquakes were felt in the capital, Nuku'alofa.
"This is not unusual for this area and we expect this to happen here at any time," Fool said, adding that a similar eruption took place there in 2002.
A Defense Force boat was expected to travel to the region soon to check the area.
It was likely the underwater eruption was taking place to the west of the low-lying twin volcanic islands of Hunga Tonga and Hunga Ha'apai, within sight of Nuku'alofa.
Large amounts of pumice thrown up by the erupting volcano would likely clog beaches on the southern coast of nearby Fiji islands within a short time, he said.
Tonga, a 170-island archipelago about halfway between Australia and Tahiti, is part of the Pacific "ring of fire" — an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones stretching from Chile in South America through Alaska and down through Vanuatu to Tonga.
I'm glad we're getting closer to acceptance here, sort of the "WTFDetroit Volcanic Awakening".
Thanks, Mo.
