Official WTFDetroit Movie Review Thread

Hitman was pretty good. They had to add in that "love story" aspect of it, which was entirely unneeded. If they'd just had him walking around slaying bitches I'd have been happy.

Just got back from seeing Awake. I didn't think it would be my kind of movie but my sister talked me into it and it actually turned out to be really good. A lot of twists and turns, plus you get to see Jessica Alba boob. A fair amount of side boob and a very close up shot of her in a wet white t-shirt with no bra, for those of you that like to know those things.

Every time I hear side boob I think of that episode of Family Guy that talks about it for about 5 minutes.

That's awesome. Most movies should just cut out their endings anyway. Writers have no idea how to end a movie for some reason, they usually do something stupid like "the guy gets the girl and they save the President and everyone lived happily ever after." I like it when movies end unresolved.

I've been on the run since.

Swami: Right on about movie endings. Most of them are bad. They cater to the low intelligence and thought process of American's who like everything wrapped up nice and tidy, which is quite unlike American life.

Oceans 13. It wasn't any worse than I expected, better than the other choices. Sucks you're going to 'have to' watch Hairspray though. I just tell the missus 'no'. I've been supposed to watch 'Moulin Rouge' for some time now because she watched the first two Matrix movies.

Casino Royale I say. But it seemed obvious that your choice should be the one movie you didnt comment on.

O13 it was, and it was better than my low expectations.

That said, the formula is tired and it's time to retire the series, IMO.

Pacino was, well, Pacino, so that was nice.

I also liked that the guy that used to play Super Dave Osborne had a significant part.

John Waters is an acquired taste that I've never really acquired. I watch most of his movies (perhaps with the exception of Serial Mom) and mentally go "uh, ok". I was in Baltimore awhile back and never acquired his love of the place, that's for damn sure.

Baltimore is great. It's got all the urban decay of the north plus all the bigotry of the south. Did I say great? I meant horrible.

That being said, John Waters is awesome and the original Hairspray is seriously one of the funniest movies in the world.

There's a world of difference between "old" John Waters (up to Polyester in 1981) and "new" John Waters (Hairspray and later). His "old" stuff is SERIOUSLY deranged and not for weak stomachs. His "new" stuff is a lot more tame, but still pretty funny.

Just saw The Zodiac on TMCHD. Pretty damn good and suspenseful, albeit without resolution (obviously considering the material). 8.5/10

I recently watched the new Hairspray and it was actually pretty good.
The most profound think I can say about it is that I'm going to spend the rest of my life trying to fuck Amanda Bynes. HOLY shit is she unbelievably awesomely hot. I'm sure that if she and I ever met in a bar, after a couple drinsk she;d have my face tatooed on her ass.

For thumbs-up "bad movie night" fare, rent The Brain from Planet Arous, a 1950s B&W sci-fi horror flick. A smack-talking evil brain creature takes over a nuclear physicist's mind and threatens... the world!

Great to see this thread is still going strong. Allow me to inject some more opinions:

Rush Hour 3

Extremely disappointing movie...until it got to the climactic action scene, which shouldn't have been the climax but I enjoyed it anyway. Chris Tucker should just be allowed to fight in movies...not talk. There was a great action sequence in that casino hotel, also. But everything else was half-baked, overblown garbage, and the movie ended on an interesting note, but one I would not have used.

The Simpsons Movie

I laughed out loud very hard on at least three separate occasions. It wasn't as though they reverted to the formula...more like they went back to what's actually funny. And allowing them to curse is always a nice touch. That movie single-handedly made The Simpsons culturally relevant again, God bless its soul.

Ratatouille

Good movie. Took too long to get around to the meat of the matter and farcical at its worst (remember, this is a movie about a rat who wants to become a French chef), but it had a couple relatively funny sequences, good voice work (Patton Oswalt gives the voice of Remy, the main rat, and he was good), and an ending that I thought very satisfying. Once again, Disney provides another animated character who, if she was real, you'd probably want to hit (Colette). This is becoming an alarming trend.

Ocean's 13

Could have completely bombed given the parameters they worked with but it was pretty fun. Pacino was solid, and the subplot with the hotel reviewer was great.

Superbad

Did not disappoint, and that's always a good thing when every fucking person on the street tells you it's amazing. It's not the best movie you've ever seen, but it's damn good. The best part of the movie was the dialogue, some of which captured the moment so perfectly it was hilarious. Emma Stone (Jules) was fucking hot, which helped my viewing experience. But yeah...Michael Cera was great, Jonah Hill was convincing, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse had some amazing lines and delivery that allowed his character to really blossom.

We Are Marshall

Ah, the good ol' Disney formula. But it's actually worth viewing because a) Matthew McConaughey (I had to look up his last name) was really good, and the movie's richly shot a la Remember the Titans. And you know, obviously, what's going to happen even if you'd never heard of the story. Interesting note: the girl who plays Annie is Kate Mara, the granddaughter of the late Giants owner Wellington Mara.

Intolerable Cruelty

God, was this movie funny. Go watch it. It's a chick flick, so grab the wife, but you won't be disappointed because you get to stare at Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Brick

Don't know if anyone's seen this (noir-style movie starring Joseph Gordon Leavitt) but it's slowly creeping into my all-time favorites list with every viewing. Enhancing the appeal that much more is the fact that Meagan Good (yes, THAT Meagan Good) is a supporting character and she plays her part well.

Semi-Pro

I have not seen this movie. No one has. But here's a link to the R-Rated NSFW trailer, and it's hilarious. I think a WTF field trip is in order.

Saw Juno over the weekend. It's a movie about a smarmy, witty, independent-minded teenage girl ("Juno", Ellen Page) who gets pregnant after convincing her awkward best friend ("Bleeker", Michael Cera) to sleep with her. Her dad (J.K. Simmons) is awesome, and her stepmom (Allison Janney) is too. Jason Bateman and Jennifer Garner play the slightly creepy couple who hope to adopt the baby. I pretty much love all these actors, so it was easy to convince myself to see this movie.

Watched Pee-wee's Big Adventure last night with the Tim Burton/Paul Ruebens commentary enabled (xmas gift).

A very entertaining thing to wtach if you liked the movie (Top 5 for me, btw).

Factoid: They originally wanted Andre the Giant for the role of "Andy"

I finally got to watch V for Vendetta via some HD movie channel a few days ago. It was quite a good movie, although I thought some of the plot could of used more fleshing out. I followed it well enough, but I was just interested in a few more things going on that weren't really played on as much as I thought they should have.

As a movie i give V an 8/10 as a conversion from a graphic novel I give it a 5 out of 10. Personally I thought they killed some great things that were in the book. And trying to develop a love story between Evey and V was horrible. I like the colder more alienated version of V in the book.

Ah, I'll have to check the graphic novel out. I knew it was a conversion, but I had no idea how the graphic novel progressed aside from the movie.

Its a good read, he's also more of a prick to her in the book on some tough tough love enlightenment shit..

Also read the Watchmen, theres a reason Alan Moore's graphic novels are getting converted more than anybody's right now with frank miller a close second. He writes some fresh ideas and great stories only a psycho could write.

We are having Lord of the Rings extended edition marathon tomorrow at the house. Total day of sloth.

Stranger Than Fiction -- An decent movie that made me want to see the ending. Will Ferrell was decent, although obviously it wasn't his typical role, I think he did well enough. Could have used a little more comedy thrown in... The movie is labeled "comedy" on the movie channel when it is obviously more of a dramatic type movie. Regardless, it was good but not great.
