Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

Robert Downey Jr. plays that one role he plays (smartass loser) he also narrates the movie (always hard to pull off well IMO) and even comments on the movie itself (e.g. Downey: "I bet you're saying to yourself 'That's an odd scene. Why would they put that in there'") which almost never a good thing. That being said Downey does work as the hapless foil well.

Its like a comedy/mystery plot about a petty thief from a small town who gets "discovered" for a movie and gets wrapped up in a Hollywood murder(s). Knowing that its a movie where they talk to you about the movie itself pretty much lets you know the mood of the thing. I laughed a good bit but while the story "went somewhere" (they figured out their little mystery, though they had to introduce new elements to do it so you won't be figuring it out if you were trying to, which you shouldn't because that's too much of an investment for this movie) it just kind of rambled along between set-ups for insults (most of the humor was of that sort) or situations to make Downey look more hapless. The ending epilogue (which is introduced with a scene title that says "epilogue") has a nicely written moment with a Kilmer confrontation (how they handled this moment, and I won't explain it to avoid spoilers, is actually perhaps the best writing of the movie. Its understated so don't expect fireworks) but then continues to just babble to the point where the movie itself pretty much admits its doing so (Kilmer covers Downey's mouth to stop him from talking) and finally ends.

I thought Kilmer was fine in his role, nothing special but nothing bad either. His character was written rather wooden so he couldn't really hurt it that way (which he does to many of his parts IMO). He's pretty much an insulting P.I. who is a winner compared to Downey's loser character. He's also gay which is the second main focus of the humor (gay jokes to and from Kilmer).

All in all I'd say its a fine rental for a throw-away weekday night but I wouldn't plan anything around it. 6.5/10

i always liked the games, and if i remember correctly most of the stuff in the movie wasnt from the games. it was just stupid.

Final Destination 3: 5/10

i didnt like the first one, the death scenes were awesome in the second one, but the third one took a step back. the 'choose your fate' thing was kinda dumb too. im going to great america in a week or so, and i will be a bit nervous on the coasters so i guess it gets a thumbs up for that.

Paul Giamatti (on the right) is AMAZING in this movie, as a supporting actor.

The backdrop of the movie is Great Depression. The main character is Jim Braddock (Russell Crowe), who's real life story is one worth telling. Renee Zellwegger does a convincing job as Braddock's steadfast wife. Ron Howard directs this and does a fantastic job painting the picture of the tensions of the Great Depression and the triumph of Braddock's life. Loved this movie, highly recommended.

I just watched The Year Of The Yao documentary again.

If you're missing any sense of the NBA during the summer, it's great to watch. It's not deeply pretentious or poignantly meaningful Oscar-worthy stuff. Yao's quote about "how does a blade of grass thank the sun" comes the closest to Oriental philosophy. No, it's basically just entertaining, especially if you're an NBA fan. Rather than a review, here's some random notes:

* Yao really looks like his mother.

* Frank Deford the SI columnist is a seriously weird looking dude, but otherwise has that typical bluster. "Shaq vs. Yao is the greatest matchup since Russell vs. Chamberlain".. uhhh... right.

* Kelvin Cato comes across as a decent dude.

* Yao Ming + Sir Charles = Chow Ming

* Don't give Yao a golf club... the swing he has with those long arms... fuckin' deadly!

* Shaq comes across as the invincible Cookie Monster, giving his best Mutombo sound, and bragging about that offarm and elbow. I want to call him a fucker, but he's amusing as hell at times.

* Seeing KG look short next to Yao Ming is just weird to me. For other ballers, it doesn't bother me, but 6'12" KG?!

* David Stern smiles like the Anti-Christ.

* CoCo Lee, Chinese singer, is pretty hawt!

* Colin Pine is Yao's interpreter and figures prominently in the movie. He also is translating for Yao when he speaks Mandarin. Often, it means he's talking to himself, and it can be disconcerting. He tries to change his tone a little when speaking on Yao's behalf, but it doesn't always work. I suspect that if Darko had a Colin Pine-like figure in his life, he'd still be in Detroit.

* Some All-Star reporter idiot asked him how possible it was for him to blend in. Gotta love 'em... yup.

* You can watch a lot of times and seeing how far he has to bow his head through doors still gives you a "da-a-yum" moment every now and then.

One problem I have with foreign films is that I generally need a dub in order to "watch" DVDs on TV as I'm sitting at a computer. I don't mind subtitles, and in fact, I'll watch with both subtitles and dubbing when they vary. But I just can't timeslice my attention without having English verbal cues, even if the dub is awful compared to the subtitles. I rarely want to surrender every last ounce of my attention to a movie, and certainly not at home when there's distractions I can't control.

havent seen shiri but taegu ki was very good but now where near the other war movie sil-mi-do., another movie that came out aruond the same time. sil mi do is a true story, cant remmeber if taegu ki was true.

i've downloaded all of the well known korean movies for my parents to watch, i never really had any interest in watching them until now. i'm definitely going to check out all the movies mentioned above.

i always wonder how US audiences follow the translation (dubs and subtitles). my korean is passable, so i can usually follow along just by listening to the korean dialogue. but, i still turn on the subtitles to catch things i don't understand. it's hard for me to seperate my cultural knowledge to see if non-koreans will "get" the relationships, distinctions of class and social status, etc. glad to see there's some love for korean cinema :D
