Saw Zodiac on DVD this weekend, I can't remember the last movie that I saw that I thought was really good (the wife thinks I'm a "movie snob") but this was a very good flick.
Make sure you have about 3 hours available, because we were planning on watching half one night and the other half the next, but we couldn't turn it off.
I saw Fearless over the weekend on Region 1 DVD. It has fucking AWESOME fighting sequences! The rest of the movie is decent, but bashes you over the head and overdoes the Important Message just a little -- "afterschool special, with blood". Jet Li comes across as a fucking badass, though... even moreso than in Lethal Weapon 4. About the only thing I could wish for are even more fighting scenes. Supposedly, there were a lot of cuts and there's a Director's Cut with even more. That I want to see...Quote:

We were the only two people in the theatre which gave it the feel of watching it at home only with a kick ass home theatre system. It was good and definately worth the watch. It has a bit of a slow build-up while its introing the characters and setting the scene for the main portion of the movie which my buddy and I used to goof on things. But once it gets through the prologue you are drawn in (and we instictively stopped ripping on things). The ending has a bit of a jump through time portion as it needs time in the movie's world to pass to get to the ending they want but we both agreed they walked the thin line of just throwing you into the future and came out on the good side of things. Its subtitled (from German) which you should know going in, but I definitely recomend it.
i watched a movie last night called cannibal holocaust. its from the early 80s, i stumbled upon it, not sure if its at all known or not.
i guess it was a bit of a precurser to blair witch project, in that the producers tried to creat the buzz that it was real.
and i'll tell you what, ive seen some pretty f'd up things, and this movie is up there. the movie's point, if it has one, is very simple. but it is expressed so powerfully that it works great.
i think its a movie thats definitly worth watching, but a warning that there is extremely graphic violence, rape, and real animal torture. not a movie youd watch with your kids or while downing a couple beers.
you can check it out through this website: alluc.org (delete this if this isnt cool).
I saw the Bourne Ultimatum this morning. Great action, plot starts out kinda exciting but kinda drags to the point that you don't care, but there's plenty of kaboom and crunch and slam so you don't think much about inconsistencies and the "why is this happening" aspect. There was good, mostly laconic acting. It'd probably be a good idea to watch the previous Bourne movie before this one, which I didn't. My experience was hampered by the air conditioning not being turned on in the theater It's definitely a thumbs up, but I may have liked it better if not for that "cooped up hot air" feeling.
Agree with you totally, I couldn't believe what I saw when I watched it.Quote:

one thing i really liked about this movie was the method the story was told. crew is missing, second crew goes in looking, finds tape. 2nd half movie is watching the tape.
you would think a ton of thrillers would be set up that way, but its really rare.
Saw Shrek 3 at the dollar movies at Briarwood (hey, it was a buck, why not?). Definately the worst of the 3. There were a few funny spots but nothing stellar. Worth the buck, but glad I wasn't one of the millions who spent 8-10 bucks on a ticket.
you definately have to see the first 2. They are great movies for sure. Perhaps you didn't enjoy this one as much because of that (don't know, I haven't seen the new one yet).Quote:

It was one of the most god awful 15 minutes of movie that I've ever seen. That's how long it took to turn it off.
Please do what is right and avoid this film.
I was so excited when that movie came out - I love Mike Judge. But it was a huge disappointment, and I'm not sure if it's because the movie was supposed to be filled with that much stupidity or not, but this I know: no one wants to see a movie that's this stupid for this long.
pleasantly surprised by 'lord of war'. i usually hate nicholas cage but this was a decent film. nothing i'd watch repeatedly but it was a decent movie.
What I meant is that you may want to re-watch them if you haven't seen them recently. I saw the first two when they came to DVD, but that was awhile ago. Ultimatum spend a lot of time flashing back to events from the second movie in particular, almost to the point of distraction.Quote:

BTW, I rented the Pristege and it was decent, but the sound was the worst I have EVER seen. The music was really loud and the talking was really soft. I could barely hear them talking most of the movie. It really pissed me off. Even if you turned it up that didn't help because the music drowned out the talking. And my wife said the same thing, so I know it wasn't just my ears. Did anyone else experience this?
also, you fooled me Mxy. I thought your clip was the "um yeah, I'm just not sure about that right now"
I watched the Prestige on DVD with some friends and the sound wasn't a problem that I recall.
go see knocked up if its out in the theaters or in tvlinks but mother of fuck its a great movie.
It was probably the DVD then. We rented another movie from there and there were parts were the audio went out completely. I'm not going back to the local movie store again.Quote:

I liked it and it was good to see some closure to the story. My only problem with the series is probably its main strength. It sticks with the same formula so tightly that you know coming in exactly what you are getting. The bad parts to that are very little dialogue, a new female love interest who will suddenly help Bourne for no reason other than "women are sappy and fall in love easily", a story built on the audience's lack of knowledge so its easier to steer the plot (my main beef right there), new executive bad guy, new executive bad guy's boss who is the real bad guy, a CIA that is apparently incapable of getting anything done, in fighting between good CIA and bad CIA, running/car chases that are overly long and only somewhat cool to fill the lack of story. The good parts are quick action, easily followable storyline (since they give you almost no information to get sidetracked on), a movie that isn't bogged down with uneeded dialogue, personal drama, or false plot leads.
In the end I wasn't given enough story throughout the series to care about Bourne enough to over look the fact that the movie's plot was so thin. It was decent though.
Something certainly notable about this one was that Bourne not only looks a lot older than the first (Damon getting old and a bit thick?) but he gets torn up more as well. I actually really liked seeing him get his but kicked a little before pulling things off. Very anti-James Bond.
Saw "Superbad" on Monday night. Pretty funny movie, but flawed. Not enough Michael Cera, too much of the two dumb cops, but the squeaky little dork Fogle (aka "McLovin") fuckin put this movie in his pocket and walked away with it. He was awesome.
I laughed my ass off at first, then it just started getting too long.....Quote:

I saw Cashback, the lengthened version of an Oscar-nominated short movie done in Britain. It's about an art student recovering from a romantic breakup who either is going insane with insominiac grief -- or he can stop time. He does what most young men do when they think of having such a power: take off women's clothes and use them as models for his work. He gets infatuated with someone who looks like a cross between Gwyneth Paltrow and Brittany Murphy, and the movie goes on from there. It's a solid thumbs-up as a longer movie, but the shorter movie (also on the DVD) is superior as a work. It's a quiet movie with fairly low-key non-bludgeoning comedy and drama, and that works better in a 20 minute span than a 90 minute span to me.
Oh, the lead actor's name is Sean Biggerstaff -- talk about porn names!
new hitman preview.

I'm not as high on this movie as you are, but for the most part I agree. Jared Leto's character sucked, though.Quote:

The Host (Gwoemul) was pretty cool. Ignore the title and whatever DVD cover you see -- think of it a modern-day Korean Godzilla movie with a smaller lizard and you'll do fine. It's amusing to see just how fucked up the Americans are portrayed.
I saw it and to me, the movie was not very good. A typical big ass creature that creates terror, nothing new. I'm surprised it didn't reproduce or have some kind of friend or someshit.Quote:

Any movie that kills Ben monologue Affleck in the first half hour gets props in my book.

Agreed on the too long thoughts. Still very funny though.
Anyone seen the ATHF movie?
Of course. I think I reviewed it earlier in the thread. You could either have fun looking for it, or I'll give you a quick overview:Quote:

A lot of the jokes are recycled, but I liked that.
If you don't watch the show, good luck figuring out what's going on.
8/10 for followers.
1.5/10 for non-followers.
Thanks Mo.
I burned the first 8-10 episodes onto a CD a few years ago when the show first came out, watched them all a bunch. Maybe I'll go back and watch them again before watching the movie.
I remember particularly enjoying the one with the little miner doll, something "Harry" or something. And of course the Danzig episode was great, too.
Happy Time Harry. Freaking gold.
Happy Time Harry: No, I don't come with a firearm, but I got these: Action Bills!
Meatwad: I thought you were supposed to dance.
Happy Time Harry: Nah man, I gotta be totally ripped to do that.
You certainly have to have a weird sense of humor to like that show.
Superbad was hilarious. I give it a 9/10. Those cops were funny.
Simpsons movie:
It is a HUGE improvement over the show, and I realize that's not saying very much these days - the show has sucked for a good 7 or 8 years now. But some things happened in this movie that I could just not freakin' believe:
- Male nudity
- Drug Use
- Profanity
- Jokes that actually fit into the storyline
- The whole thing is more than just "oh hay guys look, Homer's stupid."
- Other members of the Simpson family actually get to have some screen time
- Ned Flanders is treated as more than just a target for mockery, and actually delivers one of the best jokes in the movie
- Homer and Marge have a marital problem that genuinely has a chance of splitting them up
Now, of course, the movie is a crude attempt to cash in on the TV show, and they admit as much repeatedly in the story. But it is still a good movie.
My Rating: 8/10 stars
Probable rating if you burn one before you see it: 13/10 stars
The Painted Veil
None of you guys are ever going to see this movie. It's a historical drama starring Naomi Watts, Edward Norton, and Liev Schreiber. I rented it with my wife last week and I have to say, I thought it was really outstanding.
The story is about English colonialists living in China during the 1920s. Edward Norton is a stuffy, upper-crust bacteriologist who works in Shanghai. He returns to England for a brief stay, and has a to-do list: eat some good old-fashioned English food, see old friends, get married, and stock up for the return trip.
Did I say "get married"? Yeah, this guy's kind of a dork. But he runs into a free-spirited girl (Naomi Watts) who is happy to do whatever she pleases as long as "mum" and dad are footing the bill. But they happen to let slip that they are sick of footing the bill, so after some awkward dates, she rushes into marriage with the bacteriologist and heads off for Shanghai.
After moving to Shanghai, she wastes no time starting an affair with a friend of the doctor, a married diplomat (Liev Schreiber) and she is caught. Norton gives her three options: one, he divorces her and tells everyone why, and she will be a social outcast. Two, she schleps with him to a piss-poor Chinese village that's being wiped out by a cholera epidemic. Three, she can walk away scot-free if she can convince the diplomat to leave his wife and marry her instead.
Anyone who's not a self-involved 20-year-old girl can pretty much see that she had better get her shots. But after they start dealing with the cholera village, that's when this movie starts getting good. Just to give you some idea: everything I've so far said happens in the first 25 minutes of the movie.
My rating: 9/10
Wow I totally disagree with that claim. The last season was weak. But 7-8 years is beyond stretching it.Quote:
