View Full Version : 2007 Tigers roster moves
Glenn 08-14-2007, 09:18 AM Might as well start a thread for all of the moves that have been taking place.
If I understand this correctly, Porcello's contract is a major league contract, meaning that he needs to be placed on the 40 man roster.
Interestingly, Jurrjens is also not on the 40 man roster, which means that two roster spots need to be made for these guys.
Here is the 40 man: http://detroit.tigers.mlb.com/team/roster_40man.jsp?c_id=det
Be sure to note the asterisks, as there are some guys listed on here that aren't really on the 40 man.
In short, it's possible that we could be seeing some players released or traded today or tomorrow to make room for Porcello and Jurrjens.
Candidates?
WTFchris 08-14-2007, 09:27 AM Candidates?
This one will do:

You might not recognize him with a smile. Usually he looks like this after a 94 MPH fast ball right down the middle gets hit over the LF wall:

Glenn 08-14-2007, 09:30 AM I was thinking Grilli, too. I even thought that he may have been used last night again vs. Oakland to let some teams get a look at him to try and get a PTBL out of him in a trade.
I think Shelton, Hessman or Perez are possible too.
WTFchris 08-14-2007, 09:36 AM I was thinking Grilli, too. I even thought that he may have been used last night again vs. Oakland to let some teams get a look at him to try and get a PTBL out of him in a trade.
I think Shelton, Hessman or Perez are possible too.
Perez still has a roster spot? He has to go. he's already been suspended for the remainder of his contract.
I don't think grilli has any value to other teams. I don't know what his ERA is lately, but I think it's in the 7-9 runs department. Nobody wants a crappy RP from a team that has been deperate for bull pen help themselves. It's not like we've had Rodney and Zumaya and Grilli hasn't had a chance to pitch.
Glenn 08-14-2007, 09:38 AM Sorry, I was referring to Timo, not Neifi.
I disagree on Grilli. A team like KC, Baltimore or San Francisco might be willing to give up a low level prospect for a guy with a 95 MPH heater. They might think that their pitching coach might be able to turn him around.
WTFchris 08-14-2007, 09:43 AM Probably Shelton or Hessman I would guess as well. With Thames playing 1B, you really only need one of them as a call up guy if Casey gets hurt. The other will never play.
If that trade goes thru for the other OF, then Perez is probably gone.
Glenn 08-14-2007, 10:39 AM I was just looking at the Yahoo preview of tonight's game and they have Zach Miner listed as Wednesday's starter. The Tigers site still says Jair, though.
WTFchris 08-14-2007, 10:48 AM Yahoo is wrong. leyland said Minor would not start (he was asked a day or so ago). he definately said a minor leaguer would make that start.
Glenn 08-14-2007, 01:16 PM Is it sad that I am getting anxious to see what these two roster moves will be?
I've been looking everywhere trying to find the scoop.
Jethro34 08-14-2007, 01:20 PM No, not sad at all. You're a geek like me. I'm even thinking beyond these moves already to the off-season. Sure, the Tigers could pull it together and play like a contender and make the playoffs to give me something else to focus on, but I'm not a believer right now.
Which means I'm really wondering about this offseason and what moves the team makes. I think the changes to the big league club might be small and subtle, but I think that next year they'll organize the system better so that they can address injuries more effectively. I think Toledo and Erie will be stacked and very aggressive toward certain player development goals.
Jethro34 08-14-2007, 01:22 PM By the way, my other candidate is Sleeth. It's time to cut our losses and give up on him. He sucks ass, he'll never be healthy again, and even in the event of a miracle there will never be room on this staff for him.
Jethro34 08-14-2007, 01:24 PM Also, knowing the Tigers, I think it is Perez along with Sleeth - and sadly Grilli stays put. At this point, I can only believe Jason Grilli has photos of Mike Ilitch in drag and he's blackmailing the club. There is no other good explanation for why he wasn't gone a long time ago.
Glenn 08-14-2007, 01:28 PM I thought Sleeth had some good outings recently, I could be wrong.
edit: Well, one decent outing, lol
A Joker Marchant Stadium crowd of 478 witnessed perhaps the most bizarre ninth inning of the season.
In the top of the inning, Lakeland blew a three-run lead on a walk, three singles, an error, a passed ball and a balk.
But the Flying Tigers pulled out the game in bottom of the ninth on a walk to Justin Justice, a wild pitch, and an untimely error by Devil Ray first baseman Shawn Williams.
Until the strange final inning unfolded, Kyle Sleeth looked like he was on the way to his first win of the season after five losses.
The 25-year-old Colorado right-hander, tossed six effective innings, giving up six hits and three Devil Rays' runs.
Jethro34 08-14-2007, 01:33 PM http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?n=Kyle%20Sleeth&pos=P&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=433580
That's his minor league profile. It shows lines for his last 10 outings. Absolutely horrible.
WTFchris 08-14-2007, 02:07 PM So according to Glenn's quote, Sleeth's best game was a 6 hit 3 run effort over 6 innings? WOW!
WTFchris 08-15-2007, 10:25 AM Bazardo was optioned to Toledo to make room for Jair.
Glenn 08-15-2007, 10:26 AM I won't be able to do much browsing online for a big chunk of the day today, so if anybody hears anything about the two roster moves that need to be made today, please post it here. Thanks.
Bazardo was optioned to Toledo to make room for Jair.
They still need to remove two guys from the 40 man, but thanks for the update.
Glenn 08-15-2007, 03:36 PM I'm trying to confirm this, but I just read that Sleeth and Kirkland were both apparently placed on waivers and cleared.
Glenn 08-15-2007, 03:43 PM Confirmed.

That says they were sent down farther within their farms system, not that they were waived. I guess they had to clear waivers because the Tiger's didn't have any more options on them?
Glenn 08-15-2007, 03:58 PM If I understand this correctly, they had to expose them to waivers so they could be cleared from the 40 man roster. Since they were not claimed, they were able to be outrighted.
Somebody can correct me on that if I am mistaken.
WTFchris 08-15-2007, 04:04 PM That is probably correct. I know you have to clear waivers on a MLB to minors move if you don't have an option. That is probably true for players being taken off the 40 man roster as well.
Glenn 08-17-2007, 11:11 AM Well, who is it now?
Since they are putting an OF on the 40-man (Maybin) it could mean an OF comes off.
That would be Timo, Clevlen or Monroe.
Glenn 08-17-2007, 11:42 AM The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of Monroe getting dealt.
There were reports that the trade with the Pirates broke down when they asked the Tigers for Monroe. I wonder if they are still interested in him?
Not only is he struggling big time, but he's in a contract year, and I wouldn't be surprised if he is grousing in the clubhouse because he isn't getting the playing time to try and showcase himself.
At least it is a good thing that he has struggled so much BEFORE he was resigned by the Tigers.
Deal him now if you can get anything for him.
If you MUST acquire Jack Wilson, send them Monroe & Grilli if they'll take them and clear that roster spot for Maybin.
WTFchris 08-17-2007, 11:53 AM I would wait to deal Monroe until after I see Maybin play. Monroe is a good defensive replacement for Thames still. If Maybin can fill that role (even if he struggles hitting), then you can let Monroe loose. I have a feeling Maybin will be an even better defensive replacement than Monroe (not sure about his arm though).
the minor league site doesn't have a place showing OF assists at all that I can see.
Glenn 08-17-2007, 11:55 AM 5 tools, Chris, 5 tools
For those that don't understand, the 5 tools are 1) hitting for average, 2) hitting for power, 3) running speed, 4) arm strength and 5) fielding ability.
WTFchris 08-17-2007, 11:56 AM 5 tools, Chris, 5 tools
I know he can field (according to experts he'll move granderson to LF eventually), I just never heard his arm (edit, thanks for the info above). I suspect it is good considering he has great size, but it has to be accurate too.
And Encarnarcion was a "5 tool" player too. No way to tell until they get here.
Glenn 08-17-2007, 12:14 PM WOW
http://beck.mlblogs.com/beck/2007/08/moves.html
Maybin called up, Ramon Santiago called up. Craig Monroe is designated for assignment. Omar Infante is optioned to Toledo.
Glenn 08-17-2007, 12:16 PM I wonder why Infante got sent down? The only thing I can think of is he caught the flu bug.
Monroe is a goner.
The Irony 08-17-2007, 12:28 PM the 1270 update said infante was DFA too, i really hope that was a mistake
WTFchris 08-17-2007, 12:37 PM Hmm, Santiago is no better than Omar, that's puzzling.
H1Man 08-17-2007, 12:40 PM I didn't even know that Santiago is/was healthy. I thought he was injured or something.
darkobetterthanmelo 08-17-2007, 12:57 PM Monroe I understand, Infante I don't.
WTFchris 08-17-2007, 01:06 PM Wasn't Omar hitting like .280? I didn't like him playing full time, but he's a solid bench guy. He must have the flu or something.
Jethro34 08-18-2007, 02:37 AM Monroe being designated for assignment pretty much means he's done, right?
Jethro34 08-18-2007, 02:48 AM Santiago is the new Neifi. Leyland said it before the game tonight. He explained to Omar that it had everything to do with defense. The plan is to rest Guillen much more in the coming weeks, which means more PT for the backup at SS. Leyland is more concerned with the D there than the O.
Moodini31 08-18-2007, 03:49 AM Monroe being designated for assignment pretty much means he's done, right?
Dank, picking C Mo for my Tiger was a baaaaaad choice.
Glenn 08-18-2007, 05:09 AM Monroe being designated for assignment pretty much means he's done, right?
They have 10 days to try and trade him or he'll be released and be a free agent.
In other words, he's been
:dismissed:
Glenn 08-18-2007, 05:12 AM Hopefully Infante is back in two weeks anyways.
Zekyl 08-18-2007, 09:44 AM Omar doesn't field the position well.
Everyone keeps mentioning that but he and Wilson have nearly identical fielding percentages. He can't be too horrible if Wilson is considered a very solid defensive SS.
It's not September.
EXACTLY!
JickBoy34 08-18-2007, 01:09 PM Fielding PCT doesn't take into account Range or Arm Strength.
WTFchris 08-20-2007, 09:51 AM Everyone keeps mentioning that but he and Wilson have nearly identical fielding percentages. He can't be too horrible if Wilson is considered a very solid defensive SS.
EXACTLY!
Omars Fielding % is .982 for 2B and .962 for SS.
Santiago's is .975 for SS, which is why he got called up.
Wilson's is .977 for SS
Omar and Wilsons numbers are not the same because you didn't compare them at SS only.
As JickBoy mentioned, it also doesn't factor in range. If a ball gets by you because you don't have range, that doesn't take away from your fielding %. Also, Wilson has a higher zone rating (the number of balls he gets to in his "zone" of play).
I still think his defensive upgrades are not enough to give up solid prospects...but I'd like to have him here for Monroe and Grilli if we could get that done.
Glenn 08-22-2007, 10:48 AM A cut to come: Durbin will return to the bullpen, so the Tigers will have to cut another reliever in order to activate Miller.

Hermy 08-22-2007, 11:39 AM Shouldn't that be an "E" Glenn? Otherwise add a "+" symbol to designate the return to classic phonics from representational sybolics.
Glenn 08-22-2007, 11:47 AM I considered the "e" but wanted to to be true to the subject matter.
I'll take your advice, and I thank you.
Hermy 08-22-2007, 12:29 PM Our judges also would have accepted an "E" in quotes, or with a line over it signifying the long E sound. Finally, a girl screaming "EEEEEE!" at the sight of a ghost would have been not only proper, but earned you 1 bonus point to use in the next round.
WTFchris 08-30-2007, 01:17 PM Miller optioned out, Vasquez to start Friday in Oakland
by Danny KnoblerThursday August 30, 2007, 12:37 PM
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A lot of moves this morning, all because Andrew Miller couldn't get out of the first inning last night.
Miller has been optioned to Class A Lakeland, which is more of a procedural move than anything because Lakeland's season ends this weekend. Miller will eventually rejoin the Tigers, and could pitch out of the bullpen at some point in September. Manager Jim Leyland said Miller remains a candidate to start for the Tigers in 2008.
Virgil Vasquez will take Miller's spot on the roster, and will start Friday night in Oakland. Chad Durbin was going to start that game, but Miller's quick exit left the bullpen short, so Durbin will remain in the bullpen and will be available to pitch today.
The Tigers didn't immediately fill Miller's rotation spot, and may not until late next week. As of now, they'll make use of Monday's off day to start Jeremy Bonderman on normal rest Tuesday, with Vasquez, Justin Verlander and Nate Robertson to follow. However, it's possible that Kenny Rogers could start one of those games, if he proves that he's ready to return. The Tigers will need a fifth starter by Sept. 8 at the latest.
Leyland also announced today that four September call-ups will join the Tigers on Saturday in Oakland. The four: pitchers Jose Capellan and Yorman Bazardo, and infielders Mike Hessman and Omar Infante.
Vinny 08-30-2007, 01:41 PM Not that it appears that it will matter, but does this leave Miller off any potential playoff roster?
WTFchris 08-30-2007, 03:37 PM I think he would have to replace a guy on the DL I think, and it would have to be a pitcher. I'm no expert though...
According to Rule 40(a), a player must be on his club’s active big league roster or disabled list (or bereavement list, suspended list, or military list) on August 31 in order to be eligible for post-season play.
Playoff Rosters: Playoff rosters must be set at 25, not including disabled players, on August 31. For each player on the 60-day DL, teams may add players to the eligible list during the playoffs at the same position, provided that they were in the orginization on August 31… Teams must choose 25 players from their playoff eligible list before each round of the playoffs.
Glenn 09-02-2007, 06:12 AM Come on up: The Tigers' first four September callups (Bazardo, Jose Capellan, Omar Infante and Mike Hessman) joined the team Saturday, but there's still a chance there could be more. One option would be to recall another left-handed reliever, either Macay McBride or newly acquired Clay Rapada.
Zekyl 09-02-2007, 09:45 AM Wait, where did we get him from?

Nice that Hanahan helped beat us Sunday, and Jack Wilson went off as well. Bad Karma I guess.
