View Full Version : Spartan Football Commercials
Baker 08-14-2007, 01:28 AM I heard Dantonio wanted to take a new angle on promoting the program by putting together some Spartan Football commercials and air them nationally on major stations. I had never heard of this done before and loved the idea, but questioned whether or not it would really happen and whether or not it was really true.
Well, today I'm watching ESPN and sure enough a Spartan Football commercial aired. It was flat out terrific too. Showing players together and flashing new slogans that Dantonio and the team developed. Things like the 300 inspired "One heart" and Pride, Passion, Purpose. It was done very well. I guess I can't verify that they are indeed showing nationally because I was watching in Michigan, but that is what I heard they were doing.
I think this is a great way to promote the program nationally to recruits and fans. I love the idea and thought it was very unique. Curious if anyone has seen these yet and what they think about the idea.

Good idea, a way to sell tickets and uplift fan support.
Glenn 08-14-2007, 09:36 AM Nice denture glue commercial too, lol.
This is definitely a local spot only, you can tell by the production value.
I doubt they would have the budget to run these nationally, and it wouldn't make sense to do so, either.
How effective would it be to try and sell football season tickets to MSU games in Oklahoma?
MoTown 08-14-2007, 09:45 AM Yikes. I agree the idea is good, the execution... not so much.
If you want fan support, just put Leonidas in a green cape and play a 3 second "THIS IS SPARTA!" clip. Cheaper and a lot less cheesy.
Glenn 08-14-2007, 09:52 AM Gotta use John Spirit in these too, preferably riding his bike on the highway.
Zip Goshboots 08-14-2007, 10:21 AM For true Spartan culture, run the clip from Spartacus where Tony Curtis is lovingly washing Kirk Douglas' back in an ancient hot tub.
Jethro34 08-14-2007, 01:03 PM Haven't seen any commercials and, given the comments, I'm not sure I want to.
However, in theory, it's a good idea. I wouldn't use it as a plug for selling tickets, though. I would maybe put up a phone number and URL for people wanting more info, but I would have it open so that it had the same appeal whether you were looking to buy tickets or you were a potential recruit.
State does a much better job with this than any other school in the State, at least around here they do. Traveling through Flint I have often seen the big Spartan Hoops billboard and been irritated that UM doesn't do anything that I've ever seen. Clearly someone in that joke of a program (UM sports information, management that Harbaugh speaks so ill of) could put something together.
Glenn 08-14-2007, 01:09 PM Jeth, if you want to see it, the link is in post #2 in this thread.
Jethro34 08-14-2007, 01:29 PM Ok, I gave in and watched it. I'm sorry, but that was horrible. That would turn me off to a program if I wasn't already. Maybe there are rules about how you can or cannot use an amatuer athlete or his likeness in such an advertisement, but that looks like it was done in maybe 2 or 3 hours. If I was putting something together for that purpose, I would at least work on it for a week. It's far too important and expensive to take it lightly.
"Horrible" is a little much. Its pretty regular IMO. It looks like any other college production. Like any of the cheezy commericials you see for schools run during their football games.
Jethro34 08-14-2007, 01:48 PM Ok, I used horrible because I was comparing it against its greatest potential. Let's maybe agree that it fell far short of what it could have been.
Glenn 08-14-2007, 02:01 PM It's more British Knights-like than Nike-like, that's for sure.
Zip Goshboots 08-14-2007, 02:34 PM I like it. Why didn't they show The Clock?
WTFchris 08-14-2007, 03:21 PM why do they say "The Fans" and show Sparty? Obviously the two are related, but you'd think they'd have a picture of the fans themselves.

They have to get some fans first.
Baker 08-14-2007, 04:37 PM Maybe it's just the fact that it is MSU, but I liked it. Not sure where the "horrible" comments are coming from. Not saying it is some high production, big technology commercial. Fairly simple, but I liked it.
Jethro34 08-14-2007, 08:15 PM Horrible because I could make something way better before I go to bed tonight, and my work is only in video - I don't have photoshop skills. You get me together with one of the posters on this board that is money with photoshop and we could blow that thing out of the water. That's based on two guys that aren't fans, didn't go to school for it, and don't make a living doing it.
If I were the athletic department and I was investing the money to air something, I would want to make sure it was better than what two message boards hacks could do in one evening.
Horrible compared to nothing, no. Horrible compared to what the genius that had the original idea might have first imagined? I hope so.
It's not because it's State either. If it was all maize and blue in that clip I would have been embarrassed.

That's the point. It was Sparty. Michigan wouldn;t do something that embarrassing.

I agree Zip, UM would never do anything that embarrassing.

Jethro34 08-16-2007, 08:39 AM Right, because 6 people at a basketball game is the same as an AD spending thousands of dollars.
Glenn 08-16-2007, 08:43 AM If I remember correctly, those were the only 6 people at that game.
(Pay no attention to the people in the background, they are arena staff)

I agree. The quality of those images were bad, there was bad shadowing around them. It looked like some sort of high school student's video project.
I like the idea, just not the execution.
Despite the ribbing on here, I expect more from MSU. That's a quality school and that video was not. Look at the ones every school runs during football games. Those are well produced.
