One of the sites - either rivals or scout - was doing a position by position list of the best players at UM during the Lloyd Carr regime. I thought it would make for some interesting discussion and I'd like to see what kind of team we would end up with. I think it will make for some intersting debate among UM fans, and perhaps MSU fans will chime in with some of their own thoughts. Whichever site did it was restricting it to paid members, which I am not, so I have no idea who their choices were.

I gotta give Morgan Trent one more year before I get all "Charles Woodson" on y'all.

Lloyd Carr era

Yeah, I'm an idiot. I could say it feels like he's been here 30 years, but I'd be lying if I didn't think I was a complete moron right now.

You're not a moron, you just had what the IT guys around here call an "ID 10 T" problem.

It's what happens when you are busy all morning at work, are leaving after lunch, and are trying to catch up on all the new posts on here really fast. lots of skimming without paying much attention to detail.

I never pay attention to detail.

Ok, now that there's discussion, let me throw out some candidates -

Defensive Line:LaMarr Woodley, Alan Branch, Gabe Watson, James Hall, David Bowens, Glen Steele, Rob Renes, Josh Williams, William Carr

Linebackers: David Harris, Jarret Irons, Sam Sword, Victor Hobson, Larry Foote, Ian Gold, Dhani Jones

Defensive Backs: Charles Woodson, Marlin Jackson, Leon Hall, Ernest Shazor, Andre Weathers, Jeremy LeSueur, James Whitley, Cato June

My basis will be using strictly their accomplishments in the preak of their collegiate careers - NFL or other post-college things aren't factors, IMO.

Defensive backs:Woodson, Jackson, Hall, and Marcus Ray. I can't say Shazor, he had one decent year then left early. LeSeur and Whitley were decent journeymen. June blossomed after leaving, I can't really recall much of his career at UM(?) ANDRE WEATHERS?

Larry Foote and Ian Gold for sure.

James Hall was a beast, too.

On linebackers, I go with Larry Foote and Harris, but again, with Gold, I tend to think that he was under utilized at UM, and has had far more impact as a pro. That's a tough call. I actually think Hobson would be my #3.

Here's my group -

Up front - I go with a 4-3 and I put Woodley and Hall on the ends, with Branch and Watson in the middle. Watch out.

LBs: I've got to put Larry Foote in the middle, with Gold and Hobson outside. These guys were ball hawks.

DBs: Easily the weakest of all the groups. I'm taking Woodson, Jackson, Hall and Shazor. Yeah, Shazor only had one good year before he made the huge mistake of leaving and not getting drafted, but he was a beast that year. Probably the best hitter of the bunch and best true safety. With this group, sadly Jackson would likely play safety like he did that one year at UM, which was a bit of a mess. However, I'm not comfortable putting Jamar Adams there yet.

Jethro: There is absolutely NO WAY you can leave Harris off that list. Put him in the middle and Foote on the outside, but Harris was WAY better at MICHIGAN than Gold overall.

It was a debate I had. I was trying to stick with true positions which put Foote in the middle. Foote beats out Harris, IMO. I suppose I could justify moving him outside to get Harris in there. Good argument.

I think we should probably include Morgan Trent.
