Report: Tigers INF Perez tests positive for stimulant again
August 3, 2007
CHICAGO (TICKER) -- The Detroit Tigers' Neifi Perez has once again tested positive for a banned stimulant.
Perez has failed a drug test for the third time and will be suspended 80 games, radio station ESPN 1000 reported on Friday.
Perez was originally suspended 25 games on July 6 for amphetamines, a sentence that was to end on Saturday. He was the first player to be disciplined under MLB's new amphetamine policy.
However, with a third positive test, the 34-year-old Perez's season and tenure with the Tigers would be over. The veteran infielder signed a two-year deal worth $5 million with the Chicago Cubs prior to the 2006 season before being traded to the Tigers last August 20.
Perez was hitting .172 with a home run and six RBI in 33 games at the time of his first suspension.
