Iron Maiden
With special guest - Accept
World Slavery Tour
June 14, 1985
Saginaw Civic Center (aka Wendler Arena)

Iron Maiden was a pretty cool first concert experience at the ripe old age of 13. The only reason my parents let me go was my best friend's mom agreed to go too. She wore earplugs, but still had a great time, even though she didn't know any of the songs.

The "Eddie" imagery was really sweet, especially the 10' tall Eddie "mascot" walking around on stage.

I still have the ticket stub, somewhere.

I think my first live concert was Gin Blossoms/Goo Goo Dolls at some outdoor event. It was a week long, the Doobie Brothers played later in the week. I was probably 10 or 11.

Eddie Money. My older siblings took me along. I was like 11 or something. I fell asleep on what was basically a folding chair. I remember my neck hurting.

Opening Act - Cheap Trick

I know those guys, the hometown band. My mom went to highschool with them and I actually had Rick Neilson come on stage with my old band and jam for about ten minutes.

I cant remember my first live show, I was probably ten years old and it was in a rundown place with local bands. First big concert was Wu-Tang and Rage Against the Machine. Method Man threw their beer cooler out into the crowd and it landed in the row in front of me... in the scuffle for the cooler the handle got ripped off and kicked to my feet. I still have it.

It was the Detroit Symphony Orchestra at Meadow Brook, with Cat Stevens being the first "rock" concert. Parental units were involved, though. Men At Work was the first concert I went to by choice, though it was mostly to hang with a group of friends that didn't last. Men At Work were robotic and sucky, but I suspect expectations were set a little too high by their opening act, who totally kicked ass. INXS ("Inks? What the hell is that?!?") eventually went on to rule the rest of the eighties.

Uh, yeah, I know that. :) I knew that by the time I made it to the concert.

I didn't know it when I was younger and trying to figure out who this opening act on my ticket was. This was a few years before INXS became really big in the U.S., and long before the dawing of the Interweb. At the time, Men At Work opened for INXS in Oz, but Men At Work was insanely popular in the U.S. so they flip-flopped it here.

They were awesome live at the time, I tellya.

Another case of an "opening act" kicking the butt of an ending act was Elton John/Billy Joel when they were first at the Palace. Elton was in outstanding form, on fire and kicking out song after song for his opening bit. Then Billy Joel comes in and he was ok, but it was abundantly clear that "Rocket Man > Piano Man" that night.

Tom Petty at Pine Knob had many topless chicks. I was hoping to get a contact buzz. :)

Ray Davies and the Kinks at Cobo in 1981(or so). The backup was John Cougar (before he decided he needed a different niche other than standing on stage a swearing constantly. Shit, if I want to hear a guy who swears constantly, I'll tape a conversation between me and my kids). It was also before he became John Mellencamp, the King of White Trash.
