View Full Version : The M in U of M means MCGUFFIE!
Jethro34 07-30-2007, 12:00 AM So this has been almost a done deal forever, but it absolutely gets its own thread.
He said it had to be UM because that's been the team all along.
Thank goodness, now Mood can still be a Michigan fan!
The question now is whether or not he'll be a January enrollment. He's able to academically.

Video of McGuffie's announcement.
From Rivals-The nation's No. 1 all-purpose back, Sam McGuffie of Cypress (Texas) Cy-Fair, announced his commitment just moments ago on KPRC's Sports Sunday. McGuffie had five hats on the podium, which included Florida, USC, Texas A&M, Michigan and Notre Dame.
After tapping each hat, he donned the Michigan Wolverines' cap, and his pledge was sealed.
"The Michigan coaches are telling me that I can come in as a freshman and do some damage," he said.
"What do you say to that? It's very appealing."
McGuffie rushed for more than 3,000 yards and 44 touchdowns as a junior, and became a Greater Houston legend after one famous highlight that has accumulated over 1 million hits over the Internet.
"I'm not trying to make anyone else happy," he said. "It's my decision and my future. I know some other schools will be disappointed, but it's my life."
Klein, Texas, offensive lineman J.B. Shugarts, who is close friends with McGuffie, was also on hand for the commitment. Shugarts, Ohio State commitment, will be battling against McGuffie in the Big Ten, but he was there supporting his friend on Sunday night.
Michigan is getting a fine player. The four-star prospect is one of the nation's top 250 players and his coach, Ed Pustejovsky, thinks the sky is the limit for him.
"I think you have to start with his work ethic," his coach said. "He works pretty hard on everything he does whether it be in the weight room or the practice field. Then, making his cuts and getting to top speed so quickly is probably what separates Sam from other running backs."
From Moodini-Yeeeeeeah boooooyeee!
I haven't been able to add that to a recruiting thread in a while! This is as hyped as I've been probably since the Mallett commitment. Michigan just got the #1 all-purpose back in the nation! Waaaay too good to be true! I remember watching the legendary McGuffie YouTube video after hearing that Michigan was targeting him about 6 months ago and I was thinking there's no way a cat like that is going to Michigan, too quick, too fast, too electric, he's gotta be USC bound. So glad that I was wrong. This recruiting class could be Michigan's best since '98 (following the NC) and I can't wait to see Mallett and McGuffie in the backfield for years to come! Sick!

GET READY TO PUT THE #2 MICHIGAN JERSEY ON TRE! (and feel it!)
Moodini31 07-30-2007, 12:57 AM I just found these rankings on rivals. Pretty sweet.
RB's
Home Run Threat
1. Darrell Scott, 6-0, 204, Ventura (Calif.) St. Bonaventure
2. Sam McGuffie, 6-0, 188, Cypress (Texas) Cy-Fair
3. De'Anthony Curtis, 5-10, 209, Camden (Ark.) Fairview
4. Jermie Calhoun, 6-0, 210, Van (Texas)
5. Andre Ellington, 5-10, 170, Moncks Corner (S.C.) Berkeley
Jeremy Crabtree's take: To me, there is not a more complete back that can hurt you on every single play like Darrell Scott. Just when you think you have him bottled up – bam – he's gone. I also think McGuffie definitely is a threat to score on every play. Curtis is another one that can kill you in the blink of an eye. A very good group here.
Best in Space
1. Sam McGuffie, 6-0, 188, Cypress (Texas) Cy-Fair
2. Milton Knox, 5-8, 192, Lake Balboa (Calif.) Birmingham
3. Dontavius Jackson, 5-11, 195, Franklin (Ga.) Heard County
4. Ryan Williams, 5-10, 192, Manassas (Va.) Stonewall Jackson
5. Jeremy Hills, 5-10, 181, Alief (Texas) Elsik
Crabtree's take: The video of McGuffie breaking people down in the open field is almost legendary, and he's without question the best in this group in my opinion. Milton Knox out in LA is also very good at this, and that's something he thrives on. Get him one-on-one and you'll often lose.
Farrell's take: Compared to last year's ankle breakers, this year's group is better in traffic overall but McGuffie can sure make some defenders look foolish.
They have other positions and categories too, check 'em out.

Jethro34 07-30-2007, 01:07 AM To be fair, even though this is Sam's thread, Jonas got love as 3rd best inside runner and 2nd best downhill runner.
Now that Sam is official, I expect many people that were humoring UM to officially drop them from their list. Guys like Scott and Debosky for sure. Gray, probably, though he might leave them on the list a little longer just because they're in-state. Meanwhile, I doubt many people think UM has a legit shot to get Gray.
bukdow 07-30-2007, 01:19 AM That kid is going to be a holy terror. He is actually going to be the back many of you think Hart is.
WTFchris 07-30-2007, 09:11 AM DAMN. The cut back moves are amazing, and he goes 0-60 very fast.
I just hope that Michigan finally opens up the offense a little more. Maybe a combination of him and Carr retiring soon will facilitate that.
Jethro34 07-30-2007, 06:31 PM Feeling this commit more and more every day. Reports are going up that he's been on the phone with Fred Smith and now Christian Wilson. I'll pay your cell bill Sam, just keep making phone calls!
Here are some other phone numbers you might want to check out: Will Hill, Shayne Hale, JB Fitzgerald, Jonathon Baldwin, Deion Walker, Brandon Smith, John Major, Trevor Robinson, Josh Jenkins, Kavario Middleton, and Spencer Adams.
If you get bored and it's not a violation, go ahead and call Shugarts, Steven Filer, Garrett Goebel, Robert Blanton, Tyler Hoover and Ethan Johnson and get them to change their mind.
After that, help convince the current staff to focus on more instate kids and start calling Gray (you know you would look good together in a twin formation), Perry, Demens and Pannell.
Moodini31 07-30-2007, 10:06 PM This commitment is so huge in many facets. Maybe U-M will be able to get more speedy "skill player" commits after McGuffie committing and seeing what McGuffie can do for the Maize and Blue. Also, word has it (I know we've heard this before) that Michigan is planning to open the offense up more and Henne is working out of the shotgun more frequently. Let's hope that is a trend and Mallett is able to work out of the gun and get the ball to McGuffie in space. It's going to be scaaaaary! [smilie=jaw-droppin:
Also, McGuffie's commitment can only improve the momentum of an already strong class. Glad to hear he's been on the phone already, Mallett style.
Feeeeel it![smilie=headbanger.:
darkobetterthanmelo 07-30-2007, 10:30 PM If this guy is this good why is he only a 4 star prospect? Is it his size, his vision, his catching ability?
Jethro34 07-30-2007, 10:31 PM It's racism.
Tahoe 07-30-2007, 10:35 PM GO!
b-diddy 07-30-2007, 10:41 PM wait, isnt he going to be here in 08, after henne already graduated?
Jethro34 07-30-2007, 10:43 PM Yes, but the idea is that the system will start to open up this year under Henne, then continue with Mallett, who will be the one getting the ball to McGuffie in space. For now, Henne (and sometimes Mallett) will be getting the ball to Hart and Minor, hopefully Carlos Brown on occasion. I would hate for Carlos to be an "I told you so" bust.
Moodini31 07-31-2007, 05:39 PM It's racism.
True. One Rivals writer mentioned this in an article. Many people have a hard time making a white running back a 5 star. But maybe look for that to change. McGuffie was the MVP at the Colorado Nike camp and scouts were so impressed, they named him the #1 all-purpose back in the nation. I wish you guys could see it, there's this video on rivals and it shows him at the Colorado camp and it shows him doing drills. His agility, speed, and hands are absolutely mind-blowing.
Artermis 07-31-2007, 06:00 PM CB might be the #2 back this fall. Minor was less than impressive this spring from all reports.

WTFchris 08-02-2007, 10:06 AM Hart wowed by Sam McGuffie
Posted by Jim Carty (http://blog.mlive.com/jim_carty/about.html) August 01, 2007 11:54AM
CHICAGO - Count current University of Michigan tailback Mike Hart among the many blown away by Internet highlight videos of Texas tailback Sam McGuffie, who committed to the Wolverines earlier this week. (http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/annarbornews/football/index.ssf?/base/sports-2/1185790214104150.xml&coll=2)

"On film, he's ridiculous, ridiculous," Hart said, laughing, at Wednesday's Big Ten Football Kickoff media sessions.
Prior to Hart's enrollment, a high school highlight of him breaking tackles and weaving between defenders (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umDef_92fGc) en route to a touchdown at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse was widely distributed among Michigan fans, but the senior tailback said McGuffie's moves (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4IJ17ODo_s) are even more impressive to him due to the competition the Texas back faces.
"I can't even compare him to me," said Hart, who hosted McGuffie on his visit to Michigan. "I thought I had a great high school highlight film, but I didn't play against any competition. Talk about him, 5A competition in Texas and he's doing the things he's doing? Hopefully it's not digital animated, because to do the things he's doing is amazing. He's going to be a great player here, a great player. I talk to him all the time. I want to try to see him succeed."
McGuffie, rated the No. 1 running back prospect in the country by Rivals.com (http://www.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=54392&Sport=1), is expected to compete for Hart's job a year from now.
"That's all (Michigan running backs) coach (Fred) Jackson talks about," Hart said, laughing. "Coach Jackson would get rid of me to have him right now."
darkobetterthanmelo 08-02-2007, 11:32 AM How is he the number 1, rivals has like 5 ahead of him.
Baker 08-03-2007, 01:16 AM Never said congrats. I was pissed about McGuffie's comments about State. I agree to an extent, but those are my boys and I didn't like it. Wish he wouldn't have said those things cuz I'm a big McGuffie fan. It'll change now with the comments.
But, you guys got one of the most amazing players I've ever seen. I don't care what Rivals said. There isn't a back I'd rather have at my school.

Thanks for the dap at the end playa, but I knew you'd find a way to end up hating on McGuffie. Did we ever find out if that's really what he said or Art's interpretation? Even if he did say it, do you blame him? He's just trying to make his future team better.
Artermis 08-03-2007, 02:54 PM Those were quotes taking from a Scout.com article.
MoTown 08-05-2007, 03:16 PM I hate to be negative in this thread, but is this dude only 5'1, 180?
Moodini31 08-05-2007, 03:20 PM I hate to be negative in this thread, but is this dude only 5'1, 180?
hahaha, I saw that too. Nope, it's a misprint. Rivals has him listed at 6'0", 188. They probably meant 6'1" and jicked it up.
MoTown 08-05-2007, 03:23 PM Thank God. I was a little worried about the guy's future after a couple tackles in college football.
b-diddy 08-05-2007, 03:23 PM six feet, it says.
Artermis 08-05-2007, 03:39 PM From someone who has seen him a few times. He is a hair over 5'11".

WTF?
WTFchris 08-07-2007, 02:02 PM Is he doing a back flip over a guy?
Jethro34 08-07-2007, 04:41 PM I heard there was a story about him doing a flip over his buddy JB Shugarts. Not sure if that's what this picture is of or not, but could you imagine the highlight if he was able to flip over a DB into the endzone with a winged helmet on?
bball11 08-07-2007, 09:28 PM I can't wait to watch Mcguffie, now I am guaranteed to watch a game in the big house for sure. Good thing MSU still doesn't have John L and his tackling techniques, or else Mcguffie will be hopping on the backs of MSU defenders like hopping on rocks over a river.
Zip Goshboots 08-08-2007, 12:07 PM I'm guessing that the FIRST thing Fred Jackson will teach McGuffie is that you do NOT try to jump over linebackers in college football. Not unless you want to go back to the days when your father couldn;t tell the difference between you and your sister on the phone when he called home to say he'd be "working late".

Hmm...I'm pretty sure it's not a gymnast reel. He's just showing how sick of an athlete he is. No need to hate on him because you can't do that. This kid is one of the best athletes I've seen and he will carry on Michigan's dominance with Mallet next yr.

Uh, dominance of what? "O-fer Ohio State?" or "O-Fer" the bowl games. They bring new meaning to the term of "overrated gasbags" or you have "regional power," take your pick. Funny. ......The Big 10 ain't Tejas 4A FB 'ole buddy. I think he'll be a pretty good player no more no less.

That is absolutely sick. This kid is going to do some unbelievable things in AA.
b-diddy 08-31-2007, 12:15 AM dismissing that video is like dismissing a sick dunk in basketball. yea, it might mean nothing if thats all there is.... or maybe it demonstrates true talent.
personally, i'll take my chances with the athletic freaks and see what i can do with it. but i guess the counter argument "uhhh, it doesnt exactly correlate to football" is cogent, too.
Moodini31 08-31-2007, 12:19 AM Yup yup, I agree B.
Bad news-McGuffie was injured in Cy-Fair's game tonight. Looks like your typical ankle sprain.
