During last night's game they were talking about Sheff's early season troubles at the plate being about not knowing how to adjust to DH. He was too tense at the plate because he couldn't keep himself busy while the team was in the field.
I guess now he has a routine, and it would seem that routine is working VERY well.

Should it be changed to the "Gary Sheffield Appreciation Thread" instead?

Technically, yes. That's the WTF way.

As for his bi-weekly rants that have little to do with baseball but find themselves on ESPN's front page, I'm not likely to comment much on those because I haven't seen that they matter on the field with him.

They're only amusing because I'm surprised the guys on ESPN actually aren't bitching about it (Le Batard was sucking his dick on PTI today. Then again, do you WANT Le Batard on your dick?).

Still amazing he wasn't an All-Star.
Among all AL players:
3rd in HR.
2nd in R.
10th in RBI.
Top 20 in BA.
Top 20 in SB!
Top 10 in OBP.
Top 5 in OPS.
Fewer strikeouts than anyone else with 15+ HR.

once he got his bat going in may, he's probably been our mvp. in fact, if you could eliminate the month of april, i think you could make a very strong case for him being the mvp of the league.

.......AB. R. H. 2B. 3B. HR. RBI. BB. HBP. SO. SB. CS. AVG. OBP. SLG. OPS
April. 85 22 17 3... 0... 2... 8.. 19... 5... 16.. 4... 1.. .200 .369 .306 .675
May 109 24 35 5... 0.. 10. 22.. 12.. 0... 11... 3... 2. .321 .385 .642 1.027
June 89. 23 30 4... 1.. 6... 22. 19... 0... 6.... 4... 1. .337 .450 .607 1.057

those were some pretty sick numbers in may and june. i was happy w/ his april performance based on his 19 walks, but 19 walks is a lot better with 30 hits, 22 rbi, and only 6 strikeouts. havent done any research, but sheff's june is probably the second best month long batting performance of the year after arod's april.

I'm pretty sure his July numbers are killing all of those. I realize you were putting full month numbers there, but July is at least "on pace" to be the sickest month yet.

Side note - Maggs doesn't look right to me. He's not swinging like he was a month or so ago. (wonder if the HR Derby screwed him up, lol)

Gary needs his own talk show. Call it Quite Frankly with Gary A. Sheffield, but without any acknowledgement of that one hack who had the name before him.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Detroit Tigers star Gary Sheffield was fined an undisclosed amount Wednesday by Major League Baseball for recently criticizing umpires.

"Our highly professional umpires protect the integrity of the game on the field. Attacks on their professionalism and character will not be tolerated," commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement.
The often-outspoken Sheffield declined to comment following batting practice before Detroit's game at Minnesota.

This punishment stemmed from remarks he made in June regarding a suspension he received for allegedly throwing a piece of his broken bat at home plate umpire Greg Gibson in a May game at Cleveland. Sheffield and manager Jim Leyland disputed Gibson's claim.

When the suspension was reduced from three games to two last month, Sheffield still wasn't happy and lashed out at the umpires.

"It just goes to show you it wasn't true and how corrupt the umpiring system is," he said then. "They can make a statement, and that means it's true."

There you go Selig, the umps protect the integrity of the game.

For all of the press that Sheff's comments about Torre got, his comments in the same interview (HBO Real Sports) about women ruining his life are 100x better.

If you haven't seen that part of the interview or heard the audio, you should.

Chemist thinks Bonds, Sheffield took steroids
ESPN.com news services

Updated: July 25, 2007, 12:23 PM ET

The chemist known as the creator of "the clear," a previously undetectable steroid distributed by the Bay Area Laboratory Co-operative, told HBO Sports' Bob Costas that he believes both sluggers took performance-enhancing substances. A report on the interview first appeared on The New York Times' Web site on Tuesday night.

Arnold pleaded guilty to distributing steroids in 2006 and was sentenced to three months in prison and three months of home confinement, but as part of his plea he was not required to name those who may have received performance-enhancing drugs.

In the interview, Arnold said that he had never met Bonds but Victor Conte, the founder of BALCO, raved about the Giants outfielder's performance on "the program." Arnold was asked if "the program" included steroids.

"I have a very strong feeling about it since he was on the program. And like everyone else, the program consisted of the clear," Arnold said, according to The Times.

Bonds has repeatedly denied knowingly taking performance-enhancing substances, and Conte denied supplying them.

"At no time did I tell Patrick that I provided Barry with any type of anabolic steroids," Conte said in a statement, according to the paper. "The program I created for Barry was a comprehensive nutritional supplementation regimen and had nothing to do with 'the clear' or any other anabolic steroids."

Sheffield recently said that he didn't take steroids because "they are something you shoot in your butt."

Arnold, the last of five defendants convicted of steroid-distribution charges connected to BALCO, scoffed at that characterization.

"That's an ignorant statement," he said, according to The Times. "That's some sort of weird rationalization. No, he took steroids. This is a bona fide anabolic steroid."

According to leaked testimony, Bonds and Sheffield told a grand jury that they did not knowingly take steroids, but Bonds is being investigated based on his statements. He testified that he believed he was using flaxseed oil and an arthritic balm.
