Wow, Diddy went all the way on that one. Only 37.5% from the stripe though? He's got to do better than that.

Editor’s note: The Pistons went 4-1 in the Las Vegas Summer League with a team stocked with six players who figure to be on the 2007-08 roster. Pistons.com wraps up the Summer League with vice president John Hammond’s analysis of each of the six key players. Today: Amir Johnson. LAS VEGAS – Because he entered July as a restricted free agent, Amir Johnson and the Pistons mutually decided it best that he not join the team until a contract was finalized.
That didn’t happen until after the first four games had been played, so Johnson’s Summer League experience consisted of one game – but it was a good one. In 34 minutes, the 6-foot-11 Johnson scored 17 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked three shots.
“What he did in the one game he played is what you expect him to do,” Hammond said. “That’s why we signed him to that kind of contract.”
Though Johnson did not come back to the Pistons with an offer sheet from another team, various media reports had five or six teams contacting Johnson’s agent, Bill Duffy, who also represents Tayshaun Prince. A report out of San Antonio said Johnson came back to the Pistons despite a better offer from the champion Spurs. The Pistons signed him to a three-year deal that’s been widely reported as being for $11 million.
“We’re really excited about having the opportunity to re-sign him,” Hammond said. “We feel he has tremendous upside, tremendous promise. He just turned 20 a few months ago. As young as he is, as athletic as he is, as long as he is, and with that upside, we’re very happy to have him under contract for another three years.”
Pistons president Joe Dumars said after the 2007 playoffs that he anticipated Amir Johnson would crack the playing rotation this season. Dumars has said repeatedly that he thinks Johnson’s abilities mesh perfectly with the trend toward a more athletic brand of basketball.
The rough edges left on Johnson’s game are accumulating fouls too quickly – he had eight in his only Vegas game – and an inconsistent perimeter shot. But his shot-blocking, offensive rebounding and shot-making potential have the front office convinced Johnson is ready to assume a greater role in his third season.
