Arenas writes on his NBA.com blog: "If you guys haven't seen it, you need to search 'Marbury interview' on YouTube. If you don't think this is the best interview in history, something is mentally wrong with you. It was so good, I watched it 12 times just to make sure that what I was watching was actually real and I wasn't imagining it. He's like, 'I'm going to average 10 points, 11-12 dimes, four assists ...' And I'm like, 'What? Last time I checked, dimes and assists were the same thing.' Then he answers his cell phone in the middle of the interview. And at the end he just starts screaming, 'Do it with me now! Do it with me!' I had to rewind it just to make sure it was really Stephon Marbury on there."

Stephon: 'From what I hear, Dog-fighting is a sport'

I know most of you might have seen this by now. But if not...
Capital 9 News in Albany posted it four hours ago http://weblogs.newsday.com/sports/basketball/knicks/blog/My%20News%209%20Cast.mht . It was an interview with Stephon Marbury, who was up that way on Monday as part of his Starbury sneaker tour, and offered this thoughts on Michael Vick. (There's a brief horse racing promo at the start of the clip.)

If you're having trouble with the link (my bad), here's the transcript:

“We don’t say anything about people shooting deers and shooting other animals. You know what I mean? From what I hear, dog-fighting is a sport. It’s just behind closed doors and I think it’s tough that we build Michael Vick up and then we break him down. I think he’s one of the superb athletes and he’s a good human being. I think he fell into a bad situation.”

You have to believe the Knicks - and James Dolan - can not be pleased with these misguided sentiments.

I think it's time for this thread to go big time, off to the NBA forum...

Knicks guard has change of heart about Vick

ESPN.com news services
Updated: August 23, 2007, 4:06 PM ET

NEW YORK -- It didn't take long for New York Knicks guard Stephon Marbury to go from defending Michael Vick to distancing himself from the soon-to-be-imprisoned Atlanta Falcons quarterback.

After being criticized for his remarks Monday for calling dogfighting a sport and comparing it to hunting, Marbury told the New York Post for Thursday's editions that he despises dogfighting and that Vick "is 100 percent wrong."

"I don't like it at all," Marbury said of dogfighting. "I don't think [Vick's] right. But this dude is trying to ask for forgiveness. ... The way the way it's going about in the newspapers and TV, it's ridiculous."

Marbury also said he never called dogfighting a sport.

"I said, 'From what I hear, dogfighting was a sport.' They're editing me on TV," he said.

On Monday, Vick said through a lawyer that he will plead guilty to a federal charge of conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and conspiracy to sponsor a dog in an animal fighting venture. He will be sentenced Aug. 27 in Richmond and also faces possible prosecution on state charges.

Speaking hours after Vick announced he would agree to plead guilty, Marbury -- while promoting his basketball shoe in Albany, N.Y. -- told reporters he was in Vick's corner.

"I think it's tough," Marbury said, according to Albany TV station Capital News 9. "I think, you know, we don't say anything about people who shoot deer or shoot other animals. You know, from what I hear, dogfighting is a sport. It's just behind closed doors.

"I think it's tough that we build Michael Vick up and then we break him down. I think he's one of the superb athletes, and he's a good human being. I just think that he fell into a bad situation."

A YouTube Summer Is Stuck in a Replay Loop

By HOWARD BECK

Stephon Marbury gave away $4 million in June — a remarkable and noble gesture that probably has little chance of being cited when it comes time to reflect on the major events of the N.B.A.’s off-season.

Marbury later gave away shoes, sports apparel and haircuts, all part of a campaign, he said, to “help people change their lives.” He is projecting a renewed faith, referring earnestly and often to “the path” he is on. He said is he trying not to curse anymore.

But this will not be remembered as Marbury’s Summer of Giving or his Summer of Spirituality, but rather — to borrow an old John Cusack film title — as his “One Crazy Summer.”

This was Marbury’s YouTube summer, an off-season filled with “He said what?” moments and “Is something wrong with him?” exclamations and laughter at his expense. He delivered a street-preacher-style rant praising the Knicks’ acquisition of Zach Randolph. He defended, or seemed to defend, Michael Vick. He declared in a blog for a New York newspaper that he would leave the Knicks in two years to play in Italy. He compared himself favorably to David Beckham, the international soccer star.

Yet nothing left as indelible an imprint as a 9-minute-37-second television appearance July 1. It is still being talked about and, thanks to YouTube, drawing curious new viewers all the time.

Marbury’s behavior in the interview could generously be described as odd or goofy or perhaps erratic. No one has been that generous.

“Incoherent mumbling, cellphone calls mid-interview and a bizarre bopping and dancing routine,” Peter Schrager of FoxSports.com wrote.

“Surreal,” ESPN.com columnist Bill Simmons wrote.

Even Gilbert Arenas, the Washington Wizards star who has fashioned himself as the N.B.A.’s leading eccentric, weighed in. “If you don’t think this is the best interview in history, something is mentally wrong with you,” Arenas wrote on his NBA.com blog. “It was so good, I watched it 12 times.”

As of Wednesday afternoon, the video had been viewed 281,482 times on YouTube. And Marbury, the Knicks’ star point guard, knows what those viewers are thinking.

“I’m crazy, I’m on drugs, I’m high every day,” he said, without much amusement in his voice, in a recent telephone interview.

For the record, Marbury, 30, insists he is sane, sober, drug free and, incidentally, as happy as he has ever been. If he seemed a little sideways on the now infamous interview on “Mike’d Up” — a Sunday night show on New York’s Channel 4 — it is only because “people don’t know me,” he said.

“They don’t see me in my household laughing, bugging out and playing jokes on each other,” he said.

Here is what TV viewers did see: Some rambling responses, a number of non sequiturs and a few hard-to-decipher statements, such as Marbury telling Bruce Beck that he is not shooting for a trophy. “I shoot to win, because I shoot to win, and that’s it.” He explains a donation to teachers by saying, “I can’t give them what they need if they don’t have it.”

The most striking moments begin seven minutes into the segment, when Marbury’s cellphone rings. He apologizes, saying it is “my better half” calling. It sounds as if Marbury then uses a vulgar term to describe the caller before going on to say that it’s “my better half, my wife.”

Minutes later, Marbury looks off stage and, with eyes wide and mouth agape, starts weaving his arms back and forth, as if dancing in his seat. “Check it out: I do this like that to keep me closer to the light!” he said.

Beck mimics the moves as he segues to a break, while a delighted Marbury shouts over him from off camera. “Give it to me one time!” he says. “I’m bringing it out of you, Brucie baby! Yeah! I want to see the spit on your mouth! Yeah!”

If the off-kilter performance concerned Knicks officials — and there are murmurings around the league that it did — they are not saying so publicly. Isiah Thomas, the team’s coach and president, and a Marbury confidant, has not spoken to reporters since early July. He was cautious when asked about the “Mike-d Up” interview at the time, saying, “I’ve heard about it, but I haven’t seen it.” A team spokesman said that Thomas, whose sexual-harassment trial begins Monday, would not comment for this article.

Marbury, meanwhile, shows little tolerance for the mockery and insists that he did not use a slur to refer to his wife. “Come on, be for real,” he said.

As for the unusual exuberance, Marbury said he was merely having fun with Beck.

When it was suggested the burst of frivolity might have shocked viewers used to seeing the moody version of Marbury that roams the court, Marbury shot back, “Because you don’t know me, and because you haven’t seen me, that means I’m on crack?”

Marbury’s Knicks career would seem to be winding down. Team officials appear almost indifferent to the idea that he may walk away in two years when his contract expires. Before this summer, the Knicks periodically floated Marbury’s name in trade discussions, although other teams are wary of his contract ($42 million remaining) and his poor locker-room reputation.

The negative perceptions are nothing new to Marbury, who has been a magnet for criticism throughout his 11-year career.

“I don’t even call them ‘haters’ no more. I call them ‘lovers,’ ” Marbury said of his critics. “Because they really love you, because they think about you and talk about you all day long.”

They are probably not talking about the donations Marbury pledged in June — $1 million each to New York City’s police and fire departments, emergency services and teachers. The acts of charity are at least partly related to Marbury’s recommitment to his faith.

In the recent phone interview, Marbury said he has “always been a Christian,” but more recently came to “understand exactly my purpose on this Earth.”

“I’m a giver,” he said.

The low-cost sneakers and large donations are only the beginning, Marbury said. When his playing days are over, he plans to dedicate his time and money to affordable housing and health care. “There’s so many different things that need to be done,” he said.

While Marbury said he has become “more open with my spirituality” to set a positive example for children, he also has to deal with his link to the sexual-harassment lawsuit filed against Thomas by a former team executive. Marbury is not a defendant, but in a deposition admits to making profane, derisive comments about the former employee, Anucha Browne Sanders. Court papers also allege that Marbury, who is married, had an affair with a member of Browne Sanders’s staff. Marbury said he could not comment on the lawsuit.

So the off-season will end more or less as it began, with the public trying to decipher Marbury’s deeds and words and actions.

“I’m in the best place in my life, man,” he said. “It seems like people don’t like when you grow. They don’t like when you get older and you get wiser. I came into the N.B.A. when I was 18. I’m 30 years old. If I didn’t take the time to grow, something’s wrong.”

The telephone interview ended with that six-sentence statement. But it was the last two words that perhaps resonated inadvertently.

Marbury: Sexual harassment lawsuit against Thomas 'a joke'

Associated Press
Updated: September 12, 2007, 6:46 PM ET

NEW YORK -- Knicks guard Stephon Marbury testified Wednesday in the case of a fired team executive who has accused coach Isiah Thomas of sexual harassment, calling the lawsuit absurd while downplaying an encounter with a drunken intern.

After hearing about the lawsuit brought by Anucha Browne Sanders, "I laughed," Marbury said in U.S. District Court. "It was more of a joke than anything."

Marbury admitted he once called Browne Sanders a "bitch," though he insisted, "I didn't have a reason not to like her."

Browne Sanders says she is owed her vice president position back and at least $10 million for enduring a sexually harassing workplace for five years. Her lawsuit claims she was fired "for telling the truth" about vulgarity and unwanted advances by Thomas, also a team president. Thomas has denied the allegations.

Taking the witness stand earlier Wednesday, Browne Sanders wept while telling the jury of five women and three men that Marbury and his cousins, also Madison Square Garden employees, were part of the problem.

The plaintiff cited a conversation with an MSG intern who confided that she was having a relationship with one of the cousins and had gotten drunk on an outing to a Manhattan strip club in April 2005 that included Marbury. The intern claimed that afterward Marbury lured her into his vehicle for sex, Browne Sanders said.

"She said she basically did whatever he asked her to do and she considered it to be consensual because she got in the car," Browne Sanders testified.

When he took the stand, Marbury admitted pulling up and asking the intern, "Are you going to get in the truck?" He said she answered, "Yes."

U.S. District Judge Gerard E. Lynch cut off any more questioning on the encounter, saying more details wouldn't help the jury decide the case.

After Marbury finished testifying, he rode down 23 floors in a crowded elevator, saying to no one in particular: "Money makes you do crazy things, man."

Then he left the courthouse, smiling and singing a song out loud. When pressed to divulge more about his relationship with the intern, he instead commented cheerfully on a reporter's shoes.

Q: And what of Stephon Marbury, who also helped create the Knicks' hostile work environment -- at least in the eyes of the plaintiff -- by having sex with one of the club's interns outside a strip club? What is the fallout for him?

A: He is not one of the defendants, so Marbury need only worry about the damage this episode did to his reputation -- and to his household.

But Marbury did bring a flash of enlightenment to the table Monday at the Knicks' media day, at least partly explaining his summer of bizarre behavior by revealing he has undergone a religious awakening.

"What was the highlight of my summer? When I gave myself to Jesus Christ. The day it happened was June 29," Marbury said. "What happened to me was I was able to see myself outside of myself. I was able to look in the mirror and really see myself. I saw the person who I wanted to be, and who I was looking at."

Marbury skips Knicks' practice; rumors swirl about his future
ESPN.com news services
Updated: November 13, 2007, 3:01 PM ET

PHOENIX -- Stephon Marbury missed the New York Knicks' morning practice Tuesday, fueling speculation that his future with the team is in doubt, according to several New York media reports.

Knicks head coach Isiah Thomas told reporters Tuesday that Mardy Collins would start in Marbury's place in tonight's game against the Suns.

Thomas declined to comment on reports in the New York Daily News earlier Tuesday that Marbury's role would be "reduced" and that there had been discussions to try to move Marbury.

Marbury's contract is worth $42 million over the next two seasons. If the Knicks buy Marbury out, he'd be a free agent.

"Any type of penalty or suspension will be in-house and we'll try to keep it within the confines of our team. This is an in-house matter with our team and we'll keep it and leave it at that," Thomas told reporters, according to the Daily News. "We hope to see [Marbury] tonight at the game. However, if he's not, make no mistake about it, we want him as a member of our basketball team."

Marbury came to Phoenix with his Knicks teammates Monday. Thomas told reporters he was unsure if Marbury was still in Phoenix, the Daily News reported.

The game against the Suns is the first of four on this trip for New York.

Report: Marbury fined more than $180K for skipping game
ESPN.com news services

Updated: November 14, 2007, 1:42 PM ET

NEW YORK -- The New York Knicks fined Stephon Marbury more than $180,000 for skipping Tuesday night's game at Phoenix.

The Knicks sent the guard a letter informing him of the fine, according to a person with knowledge of the penalty who spoke to The Associated Press. He requested anonymity because he wasn't authorized to discuss it.

The Knicks would not confirm the fine.

Marbury's status for tonight's Knicks game in Los Angeles against the Clippers remains murky. Knicks vice president of media relations Jonathan Supranowitz said he doesn't know if Marbury will be at the game. Supranowitz told 1050 ESPN New York's Andrew Marchand that he has been unable to reach Marbury on Wednesday.

"We are just going to see how it plays out," Supranwoitz said.

According to the NBA's collective bargaining agreement, players are docked 1/110th of their salaries for a missed game. With Marbury scheduled to earn $20.1 million this season, that would be about $182,800.

Marbury told the New York Post on Tuesday he had permission from coach Isiah Thomas to leave the team, but Thomas would not confirm that. He did say Marbury would be welcome.

The New York Daily News reported on Wednesday the trouble started during the team's flight to Phoenix, when Marbury learned from teammate Eddy Curry that Thomas planned to use him as a backup and start second-year guard Mardy Collins. A person close to the situation told the Daily News that Marbury reportedly marched to the front of the plane to confront Thomas over the situation, then returned five minutes later and claimed he had leverage on Thomas.

"Isiah has to start me," Marbury reportedly said, according to the Daily News. "I've got so much [stuff] on Isiah and he knows it. He thinks he can [get] me. But I'll [get] him first. You have no idea what I know."

Several of Marbury's teammates said his departure took them by surprise, but they expressed no hard feelings.

"You always support your teammates," forward Jared Jeffries said Tuesday night. "A lot of people on the outside don't understand what guys go through with their family, their friends, with this team, with anything. Whenever somebody goes through a tough time you support your teammate."

Marbury played poorly down the stretch in New York's 75-72 loss to Miami on Sunday, and the Daily News reported Tuesday the Knicks were trying to reduce Marbury's role or get rid of him entirely.

That created tensions between Marbury and Thomas -- neighbors in Westchester County who share the same agent. The two reportedly even fought on the plane to Phoenix, which the Knicks denied.

"There is no truth to that whatsoever," said Knicks spokesman Jonathan Supranowitz, who was on the flight.

Marbury is still one of the Knicks' best players, averaging 15.2 points and 6.8 assists. But he and Thomas clashed early last season after Thomas benched him in the second halves of two games, and Marbury caused the Knicks some more headaches this summer.

He behaved erratically during a televised interview, then testified in a sexual harassment trial against Thomas and Madison Square Garden that he had a sexual encounter in his truck with a team intern, smiling and singing on his way out of the courthouse.

Marbury is under contract with the Knicks through next season, scheduled to earn about $42 million. That makes him difficult to trade, especially since he has created problems off the court and never won a playoff series on it.

LA BOUND
By MARC BERMAN

November 14, 2007 -- According to an e-mail to The Post from Stephon Marbury this morning, the Knicks' AWOL point guard is on his way to Los Angeles to join the Knicks for tonight's game against the Clippers.

The Knicks have fined Marbury almost $200,000 for bolting from the team Tuesday, though Marbury claimed he had permission to return to New York.

The Knicks would not confirm Marbury was headed to rejoin the team.

Marbury's tumultuous Knicks career is in jeopardy after the Knicks point guard left Phoenix in a huff yesterday morning and flew home following a wild argument in the hotel with Isiah Thomas over his starting role.

A source said Marbury and Thomas got into a heated argument Monday night shortly after flying to Arizona. Thomas told Marbury he was considering taking his starting job away and lessening his minutes and they disagreed on Marbury's level of play in the first five games.

In a series of text messages to The Post late yesterday afternoon after landing in New York, Marbury had claimed he wasn't headed back anytime soon. Marbury missed last night's 113-102 loss to the Suns.

Marbury told The Post in the messages that Thomas gave him permission to skip out.

"I have one thing to say, and that's I got permission to leave," Marbury claimed in the message. "I would never leave my team on my own. What I'm telling you is that I got permission to leave from Isiah. He said I could go home. God bless. Peace be with you."

Thomas, asked if he gave Marbury permission to leave, didn't deny it, saying, "The conversations we had in-house, we'll try to keep it there."

Because Marbury's contract pays him $42 million across the next two years, he is untradeable and the only parting could be through a buyout.

Marbury told The Post in the summer he was ready to play in Italy when his contract was up in two years, partly to internationally market his discount Starburys. It was a remark that irked owner James Dolan, who could view Marbury's desertion as the final straw; he already wasn't pleased with Marbury's trial testimony and defense of Michael Vick.

Thomas said repeatedly he wanted Marbury back in the fold, but that may not be his feeling long-term.

"This is an in-house matter," Thomas said yesterday. "He's not here at shootaround. We hope he's at the game. If not, make no mistake about it, we do want him as a member of this basketball team. He is welcome back, and we want him as a member of this team."

This is the second straight November they men have gotten into a feud over his role and it underscored Marbury's volatile relationships with superiors, dating to Larry Brown.

Thomas and Marbury are neighbors and their families socialize. The Knicks coach is hopeful they bury the hatchet soon.

"Seems he and I go through this every November and a couple of weeks goes by and we kind of kiss and make up and we get back to the business of trying to win basketball games," Thomas said.

Asked if he wanted Marbury as starter, Thomas said, "If he does the things I want him to do, yes. We need leadership from that position at the point guard. We also need defense. Those are two things he's definitely capable of doing. When he returns, that's what I expect from him. I expect him to lead from that position. I expect him to defend from that position.

"We want him. We need him. Our door's open."

Don Marbury, the father of Knicks point guard Stephon Marbury, died Sunday night during the team's home loss to the Phoenix Suns.

Team spokesman Jonathan Supranowitz said no other information was immediately available, other than that Don Marbury wasn't at Madison Square Garden when he died. Stephon Marbury was escorted out the arena by security shortly after the game.

The New York Times reported on its Web site, citing an unidentified person, that Marbury's father had chest pains when he was taken from the arena.

Stephon Marbury, whose aunt recently died, scored 21 points Sunday night.

He dressed quickly without speaking to reporters, except for yelling, "Jesus, that's how!" back into the locker room as he left.

Marbury has endured a tough first month of the season. His aunt, on his mother's side of the family, died Nov. 19. Marbury said at the time he also had another recent death in his family.

He also left the team during a road trip when coach Isiah Thomas was considering removing him from the starting lineup. A New York native, Marbury has heard boos ever since then at Madison Square Garden.

It was not known if Marbury would play Wednesday night when the Knicks visit the New Jersey Nets.

Don and Mabel Marbury had six other children, four sons and two daughters.

Knicks coach Thomas warned for heckling fan
Garden coach wasn't cursing, but printed card threatened him with an ejection.
Joe Lapointe / New York Times

NEW YORK -- Knicks coach Isiah Thomas on Wednesday night received a printed warning card from a security guard to stop what he was doing or face ejection from Madison Square Garden.
...
The 3-by-5 1/2 -inch warning card handed to Thomas features blue letters on a white background. It reads: "You are being issued a warning that the poor management, coaching and/or harassment behaviors that you have directed at players, coaches, game officials and/or other spectators constitute excessive abuse and are in violation of the NBA Code of Conduct. This is the first and only warning that you will receive. If, after receiving this warning, you professionally abuse any player, coach, game official or spectator with your poor play, you will be immediately ejected from the arena without refund."

Bernie Tolbert, the NBA's senior vice president for security, said GMs and coaches must not "cross a line" of professional abuse and determination of such a line can be subjective. About half the league's 30 teams use printed warnings and one or two GMs and coaches a season are warned, he said.

"Fans pay the price of admission," Tolbert said. "They deserve a real team with real leadership, not a fucking joke."

Nearly one year since Stephon Marbury last played in a regular-season game, signals are getting stronger that the New York Knicks' outcast will eventually make his comeback with the Boston Celtics.

That still depends largely on Marbury's ability to negotiate his release from the Knicks after weeks of fruitless and oft-contentious buyout talks, but sources with knowledge of the situation told ESPN.com this week that Boston is Marbury's preferred destination if he manages to become a free agent and that the Celtics are indeed hopeful of signing him.

Celtics general manager Danny Ainge did not immediately respond to a request for comment on a New Year's Day holiday for the entire league and has generally refused to address the possibility of signing Marbury. Yet it's believed that the Celtics' concerns about their depth, after losing James Posey and P.J. Brown from last season's title team, have swelled noticeably since they followed up the best 29-game start in NBA history at 27-2 by losing three of the next four games on the road.

Starbury in Boston?
Frank Dale is joined by ESPN.com's Marc Stein to discuss the latest in the Stephon Marbury saga, which could end with Starbury in a Celtics uniform. Listen

With Brown telling the New Orleans Times-Picayune on Wednesday that he is "officially retired" and Dikembe Mutombo having re-signed earlier this week with the Houston Rockets, Marbury easily ranks as the most accomplished low-cost veteran whom the Celtics can add to their bench in-season. Boston also knows it would have the option to simply release Marbury without significant salary-cap consequences if he fails to click as a backup or proves unwilling to accept a secondary role.

Stephon Marbury said the Boston Celtics have expressed a firm commitment to sign the exiled New York Knicks point guard who hasn't played since last April, according to Monday's editions of the New York Post.

Marbury's comments confirm an ESPN.com report on Jan. 1 that Celtics management is intent on signing him if he can reach a buyout agreement with the Knicks.

According to the Post, Marbury complained the Knicks have not agreed to buy out his contract because they don't want him contributing to a championship run with the Celtics.
Stephon Marbury

Marbury

Marbury told the Post the Knicks were playing "kids games," and "It's got to be personal."

"The question to be asked to the Knicks is: Are they fearful for me playing for another Eastern Conference team?" Marbury said, according to the paper. "My thing is, they shouldn't be fearful. They're trying to get under the cap for 2010. They shouldn't be worried about me."

The Knicks play the Celtics for the fourth and last time this season in New York on Feb. 6.

"You had guys saying I was a distraction, I'm a cancer," Marbury said. "If I'm all those things, wouldn't you want me to go to another team?"

Marbury, in his last year of a contract that pays him $21 million this season, told the Post another NBA team has also expressed interest in signing him upon release. According to the paper, the Miami Heat have Marbury in their sights.

"I know I'll be able to sign with two teams," Marbury told the Post.

A brief flirtation between Marbury and the Greek team Olympiacos appeared to end Friday, a day after the team contacted the Knicks as part of its efforts to find a replacement for the injured American Josh Childress, sources told ESPN.com's Chris Sheridan.

"It shouldn't matter that I go to Boston if you're the eighth seed and Boston is in the front," Marbury told the Post. "It can't be about money. The Knicks got plenty of it. It's got to be personal. If it's personal, then how is business being done there?"

The funny thing about Marbury in Boston?

He's reuniting with KG hoping to win a ring, while playing for the minimum.

Didn't "Starbury" force his way out of Minny because he was pissed KG was making more money and because he didn't wanna play Stockton to KG's Malone?

Uncle Mxy
03-06-2009, 09:08 AM
There was the little matter of money as well. After the hype over what KG was making, Starbury wasn't going to get what he was worth out of Minny.

There was the little matter of money as well. After the hype over what KG was making, Starbury wasn't going to get what he was worth out of Minny.

Reading is fundamental:

Didn't "Starbury" force his way out of Minny because he was pissed KG was making more money

And Marbury was only gonna get the MAX anyway, no matter where he played. By the time his contract came up the rules had been changed and no one was getting the insane numbers that KG and Juwan Howard and others were getting.

So Marbury fucked himself out of a nice little existence with KG in Minny.

Also, at the time the team had no one except Marbury and KG so you know both would have got paid.

Uncle Mxy
03-06-2009, 11:05 AM
My bad. I garbled that. I know what I wanted to say, but I said it poorly.

Take two...

There was no way that in Minny, he was going to make as much as he would for many other teams, because of KG's huge contract. He wouldn't have had to be a "pissed" off petulant child to make a smart business decision. Do you become part of a superstar duo that may/may not compete for a 'ship, or get paid tens of millions more than you would have otherwise?

And remember, the Joe Smith mess was on the horizon. The "nice little existence with KG in Minny" would've been the NBA death penalty. :)

Pharaoh
03-07-2009, 02:08 AM
I don't see how Marbury could have got paid 10s of millions more from other teams though. Minny would have gave him the MAX, just like everyone else back then.

And the Joe Smith thing did suck, but back when Marbury wanted out that wasn't a factor.

So the question still remains:

Knowing that you will get the MAX why bail on good friend KG, leaving a team that made the playoffs?

Because you were jealous?

I would love to know what was going through Marbury's head...

Did he think he could make the Nets successful? It was closer to home. Is that really it?

Uncle Mxy
03-07-2009, 09:55 AM
Marbury was going from a small market in Minny to the big New York market. That's where he would've gotten the big bucks. It's the same reason LeBron James is gonna be a Knick. ;)

The backdoor deal with Joe Smith already happened while Marbury was there, done by the same scummy agent that KG and Marbury shared at one point. If Marbury were to sign with KG, they'd be on a team with no draft picks and few assets. Those Minny teams wouldn't have gotten much further with a prime Marbury than they did with Brandon or Billups, both of whom played great alongside KG in first round losses.

NEW YORK -- Stephon Marbury didn't steal the show at the New York Knicks home opener. But he sure provided quite a sideshow.

The former Knicks point guard made good on his promise to show up for his former team's home opener and sit in the front row. But Marbury was asked to leave those seats when ushers examined his ticket and determined he was sitting in the wrong spot.

Rather than relocate, Marbury left the arena just as the first quarter was ending.

Adding to the bizarre scene, Marbury pulled out a video camera shortly after arriving and began shooting the live action, at one point standing up -- thereby blocking the view of the fans behind him -- while play was ongoing.

A Madison Square Garden security official spoke to Marbury during a timeout, and it was then discovered that Marbury was holding a ticket for Row A. But the seat he was occupying -- just a couple chairs down from Spike Lee's regular seat -- was actually in Row AA, and Marbury was asked to move.

After turning down a $1.99 million, one-year offer from the Boston Celtics early in the summer, Marbury remained unsigned through the summer. He recently said he plans to sit out the entire 2009-10 season before making a comeback next season.

BEIJING (Reuters) - Twice NBA All Star point guard Stephon Marbury will become the highest profile American to play in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) after he agreed to join China's Shanxi Club.

The 32-year-old, a free agent since leaving the Boston Celtics last season, had agreed a deal with the northern club and would arrive in Shanxi next week, the team announced on their official website (www.sxcba.com).

"The aim of signing Marbury is to pay back our fans and try to win more games in the rest of the season," said Shanxi boss Wang Xingjiang.

The 2001 and 2003 NBA All Star was expected to help boost Shanxi's ticket sales as well as their chances of making the playoffs. Shanxi is currently 15th in the 17-team league.

Wang added that Marbury's salary would not be too high because the former New Jersey Nets and Phoenix Suns player wanted to promote his personal brand of shoes in China.

Shanxi last season hired former NBA player Bonzi Wells, who scored as many as 50 points a game. The contract ended after less than two months when Wells went on holiday but failed to return on time.

The question is, will Marbury even know he's not in the NBA?

They had Bonzi Wells last season, he scored as much as 50 points a game but he went on holiday and never retured?

Is he visiting Bison Dele?

And I somehow find it hilarious he was scoring 50 a game and then just took off and didn't come back.
