View Full Version : Grizzlies sign Darko (3 years, $21 million)
Glenn 07-03-2007, 08:15 AM I'm really hoping that Isiah throws his MLE at him.
Darko in New York would be classic, just imagine the tabloids following him around to all of the strip clubs.
Would Phil want him in LA? Would Kobe?
Chicago?
Timone 07-03-2007, 08:24 AM Darko doesn't go to strip clubs, strip clubs go to Darko.
The Dark-O should be a strip club.
Glenn 07-03-2007, 08:25 AM The best part of him going to New York would be if the Knicks end up getting Artest too.
Although Zach might be part of the package going to Sacto to get RonRon, can you imagine Darko, Zach Randolph and Ron Artest all in New York City?
Timone 07-03-2007, 08:39 AM More like Darko Milichicks, haha amirite?
Glenn 07-03-2007, 10:57 AM Darko MLEicic
^I thought of that all by myself!
p.s. What about Houston?
Glenn 07-03-2007, 02:18 PM :hollinger:
What about Darko?
The most interesting question involving the Lewis signing is how it affects Milicic. It appears the Magic will have to renounce his rights to fit Lewis under their salary cap. Considering the Magic sent Detroit a first-round pick for Milicic a year and a half ago, it's surprising that they seem so willing to let him go.
However, they still can make some moves in the coming days to try to squeeze in Darko. The most obvious trade target is Hedo Turkoglu, who has three years remaining on a deal for the full midlevel exception. Turkoglu is a 6-10 small forward who likes to shoot from the corners; as you might have noticed, Lewis is also a 6-10 small forward who likes to shoot from the corners, making Turkoglu utterly redundant.
The other candidate would be Carlos Arroyo, the flashy point guard who fell out of favor in the second half of last season. Because the Magic have two other candidates to back up Jameer Nelson (Keyon Dooling and Travis Diener), it would seem his $4 million per year is highly expendable.
Together, dealing those two players would trim $10 million from the payroll, leaving more than enough space to re-sign Milicic. Finding a taker is the problem. They'd have to be dealt to a team under the cap, or in exchange for players with non-guaranteed contracts (Houston's Bob Sura, who has limited salary protection, is the only substantial one that comes to mind). It probably would cost the Magic a draft pick just to get rid of them, too.
Unfortunately, those teams that are under the cap are the same vultures who will begin circling once Orlando has to renounce its rights to Milicic. So don't expect Atlanta, Memphis or Charlotte to come riding in to save the day here. Those three teams all have obvious needs in the middle and enough cap space to make Milicic a wealthy man.
Additionally, the Magic might not be terribly motivated to keep Milicic in any scenario. As our Chris Sheridan reported earlier this week, Orlando didn't even put in a courtesy call to Darko when free agency opened on July 1.
Uncle Mxy 07-03-2007, 08:02 PM Cornstein says there's interest from 25 teams. How many are European?
OUGrizz11PG 07-03-2007, 09:51 PM I am shocked Sixers executive vice president of basketball operations Larry Brown didn't show up on his doorstep at 12am July 1.
Glenn 07-03-2007, 09:51 PM LB's contract with the Sixers expired, I think
b-diddy 07-03-2007, 11:00 PM both posts 8 and 9 made me laugh out loud.
not getting that big K this summer potentially is the best thing that could have happened to darko's career. rather than just taking the money and more than likely raising his bust level to a new high, he can simply go to the best fit and maybe get his career on track.
if he can get the pt, i'd say he should go to phoenix. if anyone can figure darko out, its dantoni.
What is the league minimum in Europe?
Someone will sign him. Hell, if he didn't have history here, I'm 100% sure we'd be begging Joe D to offer Darko a contract to play ahead of Nazr.
But his sense of entitlement will prevent him from ever being a star. Maybe he'll learn one day, but it doesn't look likely soon.
OUGrizz11PG 07-04-2007, 12:30 PM LB's contract with the Sixers expired, I think
True. Still, they are now free agency soulmates.
Black Dynamite 07-04-2007, 12:42 PM What is the league minimum in Europe?
More than he's worth if he doesnt show any consistency. He makes Memo seem consistent. Thats not an easy feat.
giffman 07-05-2007, 08:41 AM Today's DFP reports Darko is seeking a contract paying him at least $10 million per year. Seriously.
Glenn 07-05-2007, 08:47 AM Might as well ask for a billion.
Maybe Ed Belfour can sign him?
Uncle Mxy 07-05-2007, 08:56 AM Though not reported in the DFP, I would like to confirm that I, too, am seeking a contract paying me at least $10 million per year.
defrocked 07-11-2007, 09:31 PM Darko to the Grizz, per ESPN. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2933472
Milicic, Grizzlies agree on three-year deal
By Chad Ford
Free-agent center Darko Milicic agreed in principle to a three-year contract with the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday, the player's agent Marc Cornstein told ESPN.com Insider Chad Ford.
Cornstein refused to disclose the amount of the deal, but the starting salary is believed to be for substantially more than the $5.3 million mid-level exception.
"We are extremely excited for this new opportunity," Cornstein said. "Darko's going to a team that really wants him. He's going to a young team with an exciting bright future much like his own. We're very excited Darko gets to learn from coach Marc Iavaroni. We believe he's one of the best big men coaches in the game. And we couldn't be happier that he has found a new home where he's appreciated."
Milicic was recently waived by the Orlando Magic to clear the cap room necessary to sign Rashard Lewis.
"Memphis has really pursued Darko since the moment he became an unrestricted free agent last week," Cornstein said. "And I'm grateful for the opportunity they'll be providing for Darko at this stage of his career."
Milicic was the second pick in the 2003 NBA draft. He was taken ahead of All-Stars like Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade and was widely regarded as a draft bust heading into his third season.
Milicic was traded to the Magic in February of 2006 and began to turn around his career. He averaged eight points and 5.5 rebounds in 23 minutes per game for the Magic last season. But he upped his averaged 12.3 points per game in the playoffs this year.
Magic general manager Otis Smith said that the team's top priority in the offseason was signing Milicic, but he reversed course after it became clear that signing Lewis would take all of their cap room.
Milicic should address the Grizzlies' biggest offseason need -- adding a center to play with Pau Gasol. His game appears to complement Iavaroni's up-tempo system.
The grizzlies definitely have some young, athletic talent.
Say what you will about Darko, his problem was never physical gifts, but it was his attitude. He's still young, so he could turn the corner one day.
It's easy to say Darko + Gasol could be formidable, but then again we were thinking Darko + Dwight Howard could be something. Then again, Gasol's more talented than Dwight offensively, so who the heck knows.
thanks for the update, defrocked.
Uncle Mxy 07-11-2007, 10:47 PM Suckers!
Glenn 07-12-2007, 05:20 AM I guess he is back where he should have been in the first place.
Everytime I read a quote from Cornstein about Dorko I'm left thinking, "what a whiny bitch".
Oh, and lol @ Mxy.
Gasol's problem was being soft. Putting Darko next to him doesn't seem to address that. That's a tall front court though.
DrRay11 07-12-2007, 09:14 AM Will he start? I don't think they have anyone better at C, but I could be wrong...
Glenn 07-12-2007, 09:17 AM I suppose this means Varejao goes back to Cleveland.
WTFchris 07-12-2007, 09:51 AM I suppose this means Varejao goes back to Cleveland.
for a truckload I hope. put them near the tax line for years.
Glenn 07-12-2007, 10:40 AM Read my sig, Gilbert doesn't fear the tax at all.
Big Swami 07-12-2007, 10:46 AM Suckers!
Big Swami 07-12-2007, 10:49 AM also, aaaaaahahahahahahahaha you just guaranteed your suckage for 3 years, Grizz!
Decisions like this are what keeps the East in the shitter year after year.
Glenn 07-12-2007, 10:54 AM Darko is headed to his 3rd team in 4 years.
If he happens to stick in the league, he'll play for at least 3 more teams, IMO.
MoTown 07-12-2007, 11:04 AM Rumors are 3 years, $21 million. So they're paying Darko about what we pay Rip, and a lot more than we were paying Chauncey.
Sounds fair.

Sounds fair.
Rip and Chauncey make more than $7m/yr.
Darko still sucks, though.
MoTown 07-12-2007, 11:11 AM I know that - Rip's around 9, so $2 million less, but the comment was for effect.
And chauncey was on a 6 year, 36 million contract, thus more.
Stay out of my grill.
Glenn 07-12-2007, 11:17 AM lol, I'm sorry, all in good fun
But...
You are comparing Darko's new deal to Chauncey's old deal and Rip's making $10/m this year.
Terrordome?
darkobetterthanmelo 07-12-2007, 11:23 AM Apples to oranges called, they said your comparison was lame.
Glenn 07-12-2007, 11:25 AM Darko still sucks, though.
WTFchris 07-12-2007, 11:53 AM Come on Glenn, you know you love me.

luniz 07-12-2007, 12:34 PM Darko would be great on a high school team.
OUGrizz11PG 07-12-2007, 01:21 PM also, aaaaaahahahahahahahaha you just guaranteed your suckage for 3 years, Grizz!

Hey, what the hell did *I* do??

Grizzlies = Western Conference
(Vancouver)
WTFchris 07-12-2007, 01:53 PM Maybe he meant Orlando letting him go for Lewis?
EDIT- N/M, I went back and saw he was talking about the Grizz and not the Magic at all. Nice catch Glenn.
Glenn 07-12-2007, 02:03 PM I remember when Memphis was fighting to get moved to the Eastern Conference (both because the West was too tough and because it sucks for their fans that most of their games are on the west coast).
Maybe someday they can get shifted over to the East (but it would probably take expansion to both Vegas and OKC for it to happen, not likely).

Yeah, my bad. I still dip my balls in the Grizzlies roster though.
I'd like to also make a clarification to something I said earlier: I said that the Grizzlies are going to suck for another 3 years. I still stand by this, but I acknowledge that when Darko's contract is close to ending he'll play slightly better than he usually does, because he's lazy and mildly retarded.
Glenn 07-13-2007, 11:12 AM LOL@Darko calling Gasol (or anybody, for that matter) "soft" back in June.
http://www.commercialappeal.com/mca/grizzlies/article/0,1426,MCA_475_5627388,00.html
Milicic's interview in a Serbian newspaper in June included a disparaging remark about Gasol. The bravado had to do with the European Championships.
"We'll destroy them all -- Spaniards, Greeks, Lithuanians, Russians, Frenches, Italians ... All of them! They're good, but we can demolish them all," Milicic said. "Spain is not unbeatable. I like to play against Pau Gasol, he's soft. If we win gold medal in Spain, I'll take my shirt off and then I will jump from Parliament."
