View Full Version : Darryl Stonum a Wolverine!
Jethro34 07-02-2007, 12:33 AM 4 stars get their own thread, and this is a big one.
There are several reasons why, which include how good he is (rivals #54 overall, #9 WR with a 6.0 overall, same is Cissoko, Moore and O'Neill; scout #15 WR), the fact that it continues a Texas and SugarLand pipeline, and also the fact that he is very good friends with expected future UM commit Sam McGuffie.
This commit has been anticipated for some time now, but it's the type of commit, now that it's official, that can get the ball rolling again.

Im excited..I believe this actually helps the Spartans with Smith..
Wilfredo Ledezma 07-02-2007, 07:32 AM As lifeless of a personality as Lloyd Carr is, I'm shocked he's still able to draw kids in that school. Ryan Mallett is doing some recruiting for him I'd bet.
Go Blue!

I've actually wondered that myself. Lloyd doesn't come off in the media as somebody that would appeal to kids. It would be weird to hear him trying to have a conversation with an 18 year old and relate to him. Well, maybe it's just the program that sells itself or his asst. do a great job or we don't see the real him.
I agree with ya tommy, I was just tellin Moodini a few minutes ago that I think we all win here as Stonum will be a great get and it will hopefully push Smith to MSU.
Zip Goshboots 07-02-2007, 10:42 PM ^^^The program, The Helmet, THEE Fight Song.
And Lloyd asking reporters why they're so dumb.
Jethro34 07-02-2007, 10:50 PM I've been reading more on Smith and I really just don't get it. Everything he says is Wolverine. Even after the Spartan tour, his comment was that it was really just a thing to do with his family, nothing more. He worships Braylon and is supposed to work out with him this summer, he seems to want to play with the best and not care about competition, and yet the Spartans keep coming up somehow. It's just a head-scratcher for me.
I view it much the way a number of people viewed Draymond Green when it looked like he might end up being Blue. Was he really afraid of the competition? Would he really play for the instate rival when he was a State fan his whole life? In the end, no. Something makes me think this Smith thing might end up the same way, but it's nothing more than a hunch.

If I was a 4 star receiver and a school that was recruiting me offered not only another 4 star receiver but also offered him the #1 jersey and I didn't get that offer, I'd say FUCK OFF. Moodini and I were just talking about this tonight. If I'm a big time receiver and Michigan offered Stonum #1 and not me, I'm saying screw off and I'll see you in the end zone while I'm wearing green.
Jethro34 07-03-2007, 08:46 AM Can anyone provide the quote where he was offered the #1? I saw someone mention it earlier, but I don't understand. I thought people had to earn it. Obviously Manningham and Arrington will both be gone when he gets there, so that isn't an issue. But to take Greg Matthews, Hemmingway, Clemons, Savoy, and any WR's you're recruiting completely out of the picture doesn't seem to fit the way that jersey has been dealt with in the past. The only way I could see it happening is if it was a big deal to Stonum and other players/recruits had gone on the record as saying that didn't really care about the #1. They were tight with the number they've had all through high school.

Here is a quote from a story on Mlive Jethro
Stonum told TheWolverine.com that he will inherit the No. 1 jersey last worn by former Michigan wide receiver Braylon Edwards, who is entering his third season in the National Football League with the Cleveland Browns.
"He passed the No. 1 jersey on to me and now I have some big shoes to fill,'' Stonum was quoted as saying.

From Rivals:
"Anthony Carter created the legacy behind Michigan's jersey No. 1, earning All-America honors three times. Greg McMurtry, Derrick Alexander and David Terrell helped uphold the tradition, while Tyrone Butterfield borrowed the number for a while. Then came Braylon Edwards."
"Now it's Darryl Stonum's turn … only it took a little convincing to persuade him that the maize and blue, No. 1 jersey was for him."
"I wanted No. 21," Stonum admitted in the days following his Sun., July 1 commitment to Michigan. "They asked me what number I wanted, and I told them 21. Then they said, 'we're going to give you No. 1.
Jethro34 07-03-2007, 05:13 PM Wow. Why force the #1 on him, especially in light of all we talked about? Let him follow Desmond Howard instead of Braylon. Then get Smith in here to follow his idol in the #1. Unless, of course, they've told Baldwin, Carraway, or Deion Walker that they would be wearing #21. I don't get all this number promising though.

Mcguffie has to have the #2 jersey lol
Artermis 07-08-2007, 11:00 AM Yeah McGuffie was promised the #2 Jersey.
In fact, rumor has it he bought a #2 jersey while in town in AA the other day.

Here's a little summary of how the last few weeks have gone for Darryl Stonum, who is in Ann Arbor working on his General Studies degree as we speak! (From Scout)
And finally… on the Darryl Stonum front. He arrived in Ann Arbor last night and is now in classes. Sometime today he will meet with new receivers coach Tony Dews. He officially followed through on his commitment despite the staff transition and the replacement of Erik Campbell at receivers coach without a hitch, right? Not quite. The blitzkrieg was on as soon as Rodriguez was named headman in Ann Arbor. As Stonum revealed in the video interview, numerous suitors were telling him he’d never fit into the new offense. He even gave a cursory look at Arizona State and Cal. However, one school's persistence trumped all others and they were definitely the biggest threat to the Maize & Blue. The University of Florida stayed on the four star pass-catcher well all the way through. Things crescendoed recently after a conversation with Urban Meyer. According to Stonum, Meyer had a compelling reason why he should become a Gator. “He told me that he talked to Coach Carr and Coach Soup and that they told him that I would be a much better fit in the Florida offense than I would be in the one at Michigan,” Stonum recalled. “I thought, ‘wow, my coaches are selling me out.’ I confronted them about it. I asked Coach Carr and Coach Soup about it and they said they never talked to that guy and that there was no way they ever said anything like that and that they think I should be a Wolverine. I believed them. Right then, I knew just how Florida rolled

Timone 01-07-2008, 01:27 PM Glenn, I will be MORE than willing.

Don't go there D. There's no coming back.
