DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit Tigers bolstered their bullpen Sunday, acquiring right-hander Jose Capellan from the Milwaukee Brewers for minor league pitcher Chris Cody.

Capellan appeared in seven games this season for the Brewers, going 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA after being recalled from Triple-A Nashville on June 1.

"Capellan has a good arm and major league experience and we feel he will help us in our bullpen," Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said.

Cody was 5-5 with a 1.77 ERA in 14 starts with Single-A West Michigan this season, before allowing two runs in a loss duing his only start with Single-A Lakeland. The left-hander is expected to be assigned to Single-A Brevard County.

This reminds me alot of when we traded Jon Connolly 2-3 years ago. Cody has great low A numbers but most scouts think he doesn't project well to the big leagues (his stuff is good enough to fool 19 year olds but unless he magically adds 7 MPH to his fastball or 8 inches of drop to his curveball, he'll get eaten alive by major leaguers...). They probably wanted to try to get as much value for him as they could before the shine potentially comes off as he advances levels.

Capellan was once a big time prospect in the Braves organization...he's an average "AAAA" reliever now...can't be worse than what we already have...

we need Akinori Otsuka...BAD

So this guy also has flexibilty like McBride where we can send him down if he decides to pitch like a Mesa, Rodney, Lopez, Byrdak, Bazardo, Jones, or Grilli?

I would assume that is why we got him, but why did the Brewers let him go?

They don't need solid relievers?

I'm skeptical.

Actually, now that I see that the Brewers activated Capuano after they traded Capellan, I'm going to guess that he is out of options (similar to Ledezma situation for us).

That would mean that he'll need to be on the big league roster with us the rest of the year or be subject to waivers.

I think we got him with the intention of keeping him here even if he had options. He's our new bullpen help.

Yeah, my guess is he's mediocre but healthy, and most of our pen only qualifies for one of those two.
Examples: Rodney is mediocre but not healthy. Grilli is healthy but not mediocre, rather worse than mediocre.

the article said he went awol and killed two natives when the brewers sent him down in training camp this year.
