Our new assistant coach...

I guess we don't need a backup SF anymore.

I hope Tay doesn't mind coming off the bench.

If Arron Afflalo can become Michael Curry with a jumpshot I'll be happy. We need to shore up our perimter D, between Lindsey and the binary those guys better learn something.

Curry would seem to precede a Grant Hill signing....that's Grant's boy.

Harper is the assistant that is out, btw.

I wonder if this move sets the stage for Curry to take over should Joe decide to fire Flip?

I'm thinking yes, since usually the coach gets to pick his own assistants, and I'm willing to bet that Flip didn't seek out Curry.

When management starts hiring your assistants for you, you are on the way out, generally.

im feeling this too.

hey flip, for today why dont you pretend not to be here, and let mike curry be the head coach. thats great. thanks.

if mike didnt lose all his respect in the lockerroom narcing for rick carlisle, i think he might make an excellent coach. i say might because i have virtually no clue, but respected, and he certainly didnt make it in the nba with just his athleticism.

He does have his Masters Degree after all, as we have been reminded 1,001 times.

Yeah, and I'm sure Curry will get paid crap if he takes over, which we'll probably be necessary to sell the move to the jacketed one. Saunders is still owed a shit-ton of money so no way we hire a name coach if he's fired.

What more could Hill want?

Joe D, Lindsey, Curry, Arnie, a nice role and our MLE.

I think he's coming back.

Only things we can't give him are nice weather, no state taxes and Bison Dele.

Bison Dele could be brought back, we just need to find out his address in Atlantis and drop him a line (fishing line that is).

You think that Flip sought out Ron Harper, then?

Yeah Flip did seek out Ron Harper. Although he and Saunders never crossed paths in college or the NBA, for some reason, Harper was Saunders' man.

He certainly had no connections to Dumars or Hammond.

I'm surprised his contract wasn't renewed.

But Dumars has had some say in this staff after Saunders' first year -- Sidney Lowe left, Don Zierden was allowed to leave/pushed out, and now Harper.

Igor Kokoskov is Hammond's guy (they worked together at Missouri and the Clippers), Porter is Dumars' guy, Cowens is Dumars' guy, and Curry is certainly Dumars' guy.

I smell a Saunders termination as well.

You're right. I'd assumed that Lowe and Zierden were Flip's team from Minny, while Harper was JD's "culture of winning" kinda guy, but this article suggests otherwise:

It didn't hurt that Harper and Saunders have the same agent -- Mark Termini.

yea joe d would be a complete dummy if he sought out harper. dude was never a coach who was worth a shyt.

Yea there's alot of prepping for as much. I dont think its any secret that this is saunders last year to win a title. No title, new coach. Of course the main reason saunders was never cut out for this job, is because he's enough of a pussy to allow a mass take over of his staff.

The qualities for an assistant coach are a little bit different than qualities for a head coach. He already had a former head coach onboard in Lowe at the time (and two head coaches the following season). Being articulate, 5 rings, work ethic, and playing a bunch of different roles were why (I thought) Joe selected Harper. It actually raises my still-limited appreciation of Flip Saunders knowing Harper was his choice.

Michael Fucking Curry wouldn't be bad in this role, though I'd hoped that Lindsey Hunter would've taken the slot.

How funny would it be if next year we had Lambier as our head coach with Curry and Hunter as our assistants??

I'm not by any means saying this is a good idea.

I think Porter is our head coach-in-waiting, which isn't a bad thing. Of course, Cowens or even Curry (in an Avery Johnson-wannabe move) could be next.

All I know is that I am certain our window has closed and we're in a purgatory of mediocrity until something big goes down... either major trade(s) and/or coaching change.

I will say this much, though... things are honestly a little more exciting when our record isn't a lock to be in the upper echelon.

sounds ideal in a couple years when the bottom has finally fallen out and we're using lame gimmick's like quasi-familiar coaching staffs to get a little extra patience from the fans.

I agree with Grizz on most things in this thread and I'd take Porter anyday over the rest of the staff.

And over Laimbeer as well.

I dont care for Porter myself. But i just want a coach who knows and values defense/physical play. Dont know if that falls under porter though.

LOL...told you Glenn, you're not alone on your maddening Laimbeer hate.
