View Full Version : The 1st annual Darko Milicic Memorial "This guy is going to be a bust" thread
Glenn 06-27-2007, 10:48 AM Who, from the players likely taken in the first round of this year's draft, do you see turning out to be a bust?
For purposes of this discussion, let's define bust as:
Bust - n.
1. A failure; a flop: "Darko Milicic was a huge bust and the realization of this has actually caused me nightmares."
2. Failing to live up to expectations relative to one's draft position.
DrRay11 06-27-2007, 10:49 AM Yi
Spencer Hawes
Joakim Noah
Nick Young
What do I base these on? Nothing.
Except the fact that I hate Noah. Bitch.
defrocked 06-27-2007, 12:02 PM I don't think guys out of the lottery can really be considered busts, so I'd go Yi (the obvious candidate, IMO), Hawes and Stuckey (on the cusp of lotto).
b-diddy 06-27-2007, 12:08 PM probably whoever gets drafted and then gets burried behind 3 allstars and then another solid veteran.
WTFchris 06-27-2007, 12:10 PM I think it has to be a lotto player. Saying a late first will be a bust isn't very gutsy.
Glenn 06-27-2007, 12:11 PM Check me, I'm a pimp (for the site)
Glenn, WTFDetroit, MI: Who, from the players likely taken in the first round of this year's draft, do you see turning out to be a bust?
David Thorpe: (12:16 PM ET ) I worry about the Young kid from USC, and Crittenton from G-Tech. Hawes is a concern too.

I'm sure we all have our own definitions, which I tried to address by adding:

WTFchris 06-27-2007, 12:18 PM I'm going out on a limb and saying Jeff Green. I think he'll make a solid NBA player (like Walton, Dunleavy, etc), but not a #1 or #2 player on a team. I think he'll just be a role player and thus not worthy of where he'll be drafted (in the 5-6 range).
darkobetterthanmelo 06-27-2007, 12:22 PM I know I basically have no cred in this thread due to my name, but hey its my handle I gotta stick with it. Look for guys who were busts in big games. Noah choked a bit, Yi is a 23 year old up against 5'10 chinese kids, Jeff Green kinda disappeared, while Corey Brewer, MIke Conley, Al Horford, Greg Oden, Taureen Green, and Nick Young all showed up for big games.
micknugget 06-27-2007, 12:24 PM Noah - I just don't see anything special about him and I see him getting knocked around in the NBA. I also see Conley as being a bit of a bust. His shot is just so damn suspect.

yup. not concrete, but something to look at.
also, kevin D lost 10 games and didnt make it out of the first weekend of the ncaa's. im shocked no one ever talks about this while saying he's going to be an all time great.
Glenn 06-27-2007, 12:56 PM David Thorpe: (12:34 PM ET ) One thing I forgot to add-McRoberts has the highest bust potential.
Zekyl 06-27-2007, 01:17 PM Durant didn't win much because his coach is a fucking idiot and didnt know how to use him. Give him a better coach and he would have dominated even more.
i thought guys like Boozer and Battier would be total busts in the NBA, because of their lack of height. shows what i know.
b-diddy 06-27-2007, 02:03 PM i like david thorp. i dont know if i'd call JM a bust, though. i mean, what are the expectations? i wouldnt call whats his face (the sg from duke in orlando) a bust either. and he had a horrible rookie year.
mcroberts has the horrible trifecta:1) he accomplished nothing in ncaa 2) has a horribly unbuilt body 3) kstat is on record of saying he'll be a good pro.
Big Swami 06-27-2007, 02:10 PM 100% Yi Jianlian. He's got waaaay too much hype to ever live up to it. It's one thing to be the toughest guy in Chinese basketball, but that's like saying you are the best driver in Oakland County.
Timone 06-27-2007, 05:28 PM Noah - I just don't see anything special about him and I see him getting knocked around in the NBA. I also see Conley as being a bit of a bust. His shot is just so damn suspect.
I fucking HATE Joakim Noah, so I sure hope so.
b-diddy 06-27-2007, 05:34 PM how can you hate noah? he's by far the funniest quoteable in the nba, imo.
Timone 06-27-2007, 05:47 PM I don't know...he's just one of those "something about him" kind of guys. I usually like players with fire, but he is an exception.
Cross 06-27-2007, 07:38 PM Noah is some overrated shit imo. Can't beleive teams are willing to take him top 7ish. Fuck him
WTFchris 06-28-2007, 08:40 AM I think he could be a solid role player (like Side Show Bob), but that's not what you spend a top 10 pick on. I think he'll be like Scott Pollard though. In a few years he'll be the 4th big man off the bench for some team (the 2nd big man off the bench, but 4th big man in the rotation)
Atticus771 06-28-2007, 11:15 AM I think Noah will be the biggest bust by far, especially if he's taken around 7 or 9. He just strikes me as a poor man's Varejao, and his jumper is absolutely broke; his guide hand gets in the way of his follow-through, so he's basically flipping up his shot rather than even remotely resembling correct shooting form. If anything, shooting is my area of 'expertise' with basketball, and Noah just doesn't have it in this area and in others, IMO.
Yi could obviously be a bust just due to the fact that he's an international player. I think the drastic cultural change really hurts international guys from a transition/integration standpoint (read: Darko, Delfino, etc.).
